Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of
short-termfat-free protein-carbohydrate diet (protein 11.94%,
carbohydrate75.33%) on the change in the liver lipid fatty acid content.
MaleFisher rats were fed fat-free during 14 days. The other group
ofanimalswas on a control diet (protein 19.73%, carbohydrate64.82%, lipids
3.67%) The two diets were isocaloric (15 kJ/g).The total lipids in the
liver of rats on fat-free diet wereobserved to increase by 19%, as compared
to 6% in rats on controldiet. Fatty acids were determined by gas
chromatography. Afterthe fat-free diet, unsaturated fatty acids were found
to beincreased and the factor of desaturation, Df, as assessed for C16and
C18 acids, was as follows: Df16=18.3 and Df18=40.7.Desaturation of total
lipid fatty acids was a reflection of anincreased proportion of
triacylglycerol monoenoic acids and freefatty acids. Desaturation was not
observed in the groups of polarlipids. Therefore, such a diet appeared to
result in fatty aciddesaturation at the level of monoenoic acids of
energy-relevantnonpolar liver lipids.

Summary: Numerous studies have shown that consumption of a diet rich
infish and fish oils results in lipid profiles and have someeffects in
prevention of several humane disease. Manyinvestigations have been done on
the composition of fatty acidsin marine fish oils. The aim of this study
was to investigate thecomposition of fatty acids in river fish from
Slavonia.Morphologically unchanged tissue samples of the following river
fishes were investigated: Cyprinus carpio, Carassius auratusgibelio,
Acipenser ruthenus and Spisostedio lucioperca. Totallipids. Total lipid
content of meat samples in investigatedfishes ranged from 0.035 to 0.045
g/g, and in liver samplesranged from 0.058 to 0.072 g/g, calculated on
fresh samples.Quantitative data of the composition of fatty acids have
shownsignificant amounts of unsaturated fatty acids in total lipids
asfollows: Ciprinus carpio-80,4%, Carassius auratus gibelio-74.2%,Acipenser
ruthenus-75.13%, Spisostedio lucioperca-42.5%. Thesedata can indicate that
investigated river fishes can beinteresting for examination as potential
sources for productionof dietary and pharmacological products for healthy
life.

Summary: A study of the fatty acid content was performed by
gaschromatography in the sera of 26 healthy children aged 3-13 yearsand in
the sera of 7 children aged up to three years, both fromthe Zagreb area.
The following parameters were calculated foreach subject and each fatty
aacid individually: mmol/l, mol%,g/l, mass% and mean molecular mass. On the
basis of the results, the values of the parameters for the whole group of
subjects werecalculated. The values of these parameters for
somecharacteristic groups of fatty acids (saturated,
unsaturated, monounsaturated and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids)
werealso calculated and their relationship is presented. The ratio offatty
acids according to age groups (0-1, 1-3 and 3-13 years) isalso shown. Fatty
acids C 18:2, C 16:0 and C 18:1 with 32.87mol%, 22.56 mol% and 20.79 mol%,
respectively, were mostfrequently observed in the children's sera, which
correlated wellwith the generaly known data. Essential fatty acids were
presentin the following amounts: C 20:4 5.49 mol%; C 22:5 0.26 mol% andC
22:6 0.82 mol%. The sera of the children aged up to one yearwere found to
contain significantly higher amounts of short-chainfatty acids and lower
amounts of C 18:2 and C 20:4 than the serafrom children older than one
year.

Summary: Influence of hexachlorocyclohexane isomers on rate
dechlorinationof lindane in rats' tissues was investigated.
Experimentalanimals, male Wistar rats, were fed for 20 days with
threedifferent diets:a) standard food for laboratory animals
withundetectable amounts of HCH isomers;b) standard food containing250 ppm
lindane; c) standard food containing alpha, beta andgamma isomers in ratio
100:250:100 ppm. Investigation was done onliver and adipose tissues.
Extraction of HCH isomers and itsmetabolites was made by the Stein et al.
method. Qualitative andquantitative determination of organochlorine
insecticides wasdone by gas chromatography.
Results of this examination showed that in first 9 hrs after foodintake
which contained HCH isomers, lindane was dechlorinatedinto chlorbenzene and
benzene. The rate of dechlorination oflindane in microsomal fraction of rat
liver was much slower inthe presence of other hexachlorocyclohexane isomers
compared tothe rate of dechlorination of lindane itself. Due to the
slowerrate of dechlorination, the concentration of HCH isomersincreases in
adipose tissue. For that the products ofdechlorination mechanisms were not
present.

Summary: The levels of hexachlorocyclohexane isomers in organs
ofpremature delivered and premature death children wasinvestigated.
Investigation was done on liver, brain kidney andadipose tissue. Extraction
of HCH isomers was made by the ShellDev. Co. method. Qualitative and
quantitative determination wasdone ba gas chromatography.
Results of this examination showed that hexachlorocyclohexane(lindane) was
present in significantly concentration in allinvestigated organs. Alpha and
beta HCH isomer are also presentin all investigated organs. Average
concentration of lindane was1.8-7.5 ppm and present in each samples.
Because lindane is acarcinogenic molecule, found amount can lead
metabolicmalfunction in fetus. Mayor concentration of lindane was found
inadipose tissue. No significant correlation was observed betweenHCH
isomers and tissues.

Summary: Medium-chain triacylglycerols (C 8:0, 10:0) are a very
effectivesource of energy. They are frequently applied in
clinicalnutrition. The interaction of MCT with brain fatty acids
wasinvestigated. During 14 days rats were fed a MCT diet (18.7% MCT)ad
libitum. A control group of eight animals were fed a standardrat chow. Both
diets were isoenergic (MCT/CD 16.5/15.4 kJ/g).From the isolated brain,
total lipids were extracted withchloroform-methanol (MCTD/CD 1.34/0.82 mg
TL per 1 mg protein).Total lipids were separated into particular lipid
classes byHPTLC. Fatty acids of TL were not essentially changed.
However, selective changes were found in several lipid classes: (a)
chainelongation in phosphatidyl-choline (69%) and free fatty acids(96%);
(b) induction of C 20:3 FA biosynthesis inphosphatidyl-choline (17.05%),
sphingomyelin (23.88%) andtriacylglycerols (11.60%). This data correlate
very well withfatty acid changes in the lungs and liver affected by MCT
diets.

Summary: The applied fat free diet (FD) was isoenergetic with the
controldiet (CD), 14.87 vs. 15.48 kJ/g. Two groups of albino rats werefed
ad libitum during 14 days. From the isolated lungs, totallipids (TL) were
obtained by means of chloroform-methanolextraction (FD/CD 49/73 g/g w. t.).
HPTLC analyses of TL showedno essential changes in the profile of
particular classes. Thesame held true for the fatty acid pattern of TL.
However, particular lipid classes revealed chracteristic fatty acidprofiles.
As expected, the most pronounced rate of unsaturationwas found in the C-16
fatty acid series of phosphatidyl-choline(95%), phosphatidyl-ethanolamine
(143%) and triacylglycerols(66%), as well. Other lipid classes showed only
sligt or noincrease in desaturation of their fatty acids. This is
supposedto be an effect of compensation allowing approximately
constantoverall composition of total fatty acid regardless of medium
(orshort) term diets of different composition.

Summary: Influence of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers on
ratedechlorination of lindane in rat's tissues has beeninvestiagated.
Experimental animals, male Wistar rats, were fedfor 20 days with three
different diets: a) control diets -standard food for laboratory animals

of lindane biotransformation inmammals is achieved by dechlorination.
Results of ourexaminations show that the rate of dechlorination of lindane
ismuch slower in the presence of other hexachlorocyclohexan isomerswhen
compared with dechlorination in the diet that contains onlylindane.

Summary: Carbohydrate residues of glycoproteins can be modified
chemicallyor enzymically in order to create aldehyde groups able to
reactwith various reagents. We have used several dihydrazides tocross-link,
intramolecularly and intermolecularly, many differentglycoenzymes and
immunoglobulins. The process was empoyed tostudy spatial proximity of sugar
chains in glycoproteinmolecules, and stability of the cross-linked
glycoenzymes. Theobtained results, especially those with
immunoglobulines, indicate that the method is applicable in studies of
spatialarrangement of sugar chains. It was found that some
glycoenzymescould be greatly stabilized by cross-linking their
oxidizedcarbohydrate chains with bifunctional cross-linkers. In
analternative procedure, stabilization was achieved by allowing areaction
between oxidized sugar chains and polypeptide part ofthe same glycoprotein
molecule. Sensitive detection ofglycoproteins bound to solid supports could
be achieved withnovel polymeric hydrazides based on extremely
hydrophilicmonomers. The polyhidrazides served as a bridge between a
label, usualy an oxidized glycoenzyme such as alkaline phosphatase
orperoxidase, and the glycoprotein. The same polymeric hydrazideswere used
for detection of anzigens after binding to oxidizedsugar chains of
antibodies.
