Summary: Gas chromatography (GC) is one of the more recent
analytical methods. For its rapidity and sensitivity it is used to analyse
and identify various organic compounds. Developed abroad in the 60s as a
method of microorganism identification as well, it became a precious tool
in microbiology. In our laboratory GC analysis of cellular fatty acids in
Mycobacterium tuberculosis as well as some aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
has been introduced.Characteristic profiles of fatty acids of examined
microorganisms have been obtained. The presence of tuberculostearic acid
(TBSA) as a specific mycobacterial lipid component, which enables more
rapid identification of the causative agent of tuberculosis, was also
found and confirmed.
Research goals: Basically, the project aims at widening the
knowledge of some medically important microorganisms (mycobacteria,
aerobic and anaerobic bacteria) from the biochemical standpoint,
familiarizing the staff with the recent microorganism identification
methods and at applying them routinely. To introduce gas chromatography in
microbiology is to expand its range of identification methods and hence
increase the reliability of microbiological findings. Other anticipated
possible benefits are quicker detection and identification of the
causative agents of infectious diseases in clinical materials. Other information about the project.
