Title: Detection of human papilloma viruses related to
carcinoma,condyloma acuminatum and dysplasia

Summary: The presence of specific HPV DNA in biopsy specimens from
22cervical carcinoma (stages IB-IV), 10 condyloma acuminatum and 3dysplasia
(CIN II-III) patients was examined. Blot hybridizationanalysis of tumor DNA
was carried out using 32P-labelled HPV DNAprobes of HPV types 6, 11, 16,
18, 31, 33, 35, 39 and 42. Twelveout of 22 (54%) cervical carcinoma
biopsies contained HPV DNA,10/12 (83%) HPV 16 DNA and 2/12 (17%) HPV 35 and
39 DNA,respectively. Seven out of 10 (70%) condylomas were positive toHPV
DNA, 4/7 (57%) contained HPV 6 DNA, 1/7 (14%) HPV 11 DNA and2/7 (29%)
unidentified HPV DNA's. All the 3 analyzed dysplasiascontained HPV DNA's
(HPV 6, 16 or 35). HPV DNA in these tumortissues was found to be in an
episomal form of DNA for all typesof viruses except HPV 16 DNA, which was
found to be in anintegrated form in 6/12 (50%) cervical carcinomas. The
dataindicate that HPV 16 and related 35 and 39 types are most
oftenassociated with malignant cervical tumors, whereas the HPV 6 and11
types prevail in benign genital warts
