Summary: Granulocyte response to glucocorticoids was studied in 4
groupsof male albino rats. The Controls received no treatment, Oilgroup was
administered 1 ml of olive oil, and B440 and B880groups were administered
440 or 880 mg/kg of benzene in oliveoil, s.c., 5 days a week over 3 weeks.
At the end of treatmentanimals received i.v. a single dose of
dexamethasone-Na and whiteblood cell count (WBC) and differentials were
performed beforeand 2, 4 and 6 hours after and granulocyte reserve
determined.Benzene caused a dose related depression of WBC as compared
toControls and Oil (P<0.05) and maximal granulocyte response wasalso
significantly lower (P<0.05 for Control and Oil vs B440 orB880).

Summary: In order to investigate possible genetic damage resulting
fromoccupational exposure to benzene, structural chromosomeaberrations and
sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in peripheralblood were examined in
female workers (N=41) employed in the shoeindustry. Occupational exposure
was confirmed by biological andambiental monitoring. The control group
(N=40) consisted offemales without exposure to solvents. A cytogenetic
study showedthe prevalence of chromosome-type aberrations
(acentricfragments) in exposed subjects. A statistically
significantdifference in SCEs (p<0.001) was found between the exposed
andcontrol group. The results could serve as a warning of thepossible
genotoxic risk to workers occupationally exposed even tolow benzene
concentrations (<15 ppm).

Summary: A survey of available results on the impact of main
life-stylefactors (dietary and smoking habits, alcohol ingestion, use
ofdrugs) on the metabolism of xenobiotics, including organicsolvents has
been reviewed. The principal characteristics of themetabolism and the
activity of metabolic enzymes are described. The relatively scanty number of
examples, which could bejustified by the variety and complexity of combined
exposure, allows to conclude that life-style factors have
considerableinfluence on interindividual differences in susceptibility
toxenobiotics toxicity.

TRI(group 1, N=10) anad tetrachloroethylene - PER (group 2, N=18),TRI and
PER in blood and trichloroethanol - TCE andtrichloroacetic acid - TCA in
blood and urine were analyzed. Results varied widely. During the work week,
a significantdifference was found in group 1 for TRI in blood and TCE in

biological indicators for TRI and PER exposure are TCEin blood and PER in

Summary: Organic solvents comprise a large and heterogenous group
ofchemicals, largely belonging to volatile hydrocarbons. Long-termexposure
to solvents as a cause of the central nervous systemimpairment has been a
subject of extensive epidemiological andclinical studies for years, but
often with inconsistent results. In 1985 the World Health Organization
published the criteria forthe evaluation of neurotoxic effects of solvents
that are nowcommonly accepted. This paper is a short review of the
currentstate of knowledge in the field emphasizing the role
ofneuropsychological methods in assessing solvent toxicity.

Summary: Early detection of benzene haematotoxicity includes
thedetermination of benzene concentration in the atmosphere, themonitoring
of benzene metabolites and laboratory tests. Essentialtests are a complete
blood count including red cell indices andserum iron. Chromosomal
aberrations and sister chromatidexchange, alkaline phosphatase in
neutrophils, bone marowgranulocyte reserve, glycerol haemolysis time,
serumimmunoglobulins, lymphocytes subpopulations and blood cellagglutinins
are potentially valuable although not fullyevaluated. Alterations in any of
these indicators are notpathognomonic and therefore should be interpreted
at the sametime and with caution.

Summary: A comparative study of occupational exposure to toluene
andxylene was carried out in a group of 24 workers from a paintfactory,
aimed to determine the most appropriate exposureindicators for use in
biological monitoring. Measurementsincluded toluene and xylene in blood and
their metabolites inurine. Toluene in blood proved to be the best indicator
oftoluene exposure, and both xylene in blood and its only majormetabolite
methylhippuric acid in urine to be reliable indicatorsof xylene exposure.
The validity of hippuric acid and o-cresol astoluene exposure indicators
has not been confirmed.

Summary: Exposure to trichloroethylene (TRI) and tetrachloroethylene
(PER)through air, food and drinking water was assessed by
biologicalmonitoring in residents (N=39) of Zagreb from different
residencelocations. TRI and PER were determined in blood and
theirmetabolite, trichloroacetic acid, in plasma and urine. Drinkingwater
samples were also taken for TRI and PER determination. Allthe results
varied considerably most probably as a reflection ofthe different
environmental contamination with TRI and PER indifferent city areas.

Summary: The paper describes our experience in the application of
biological monitoring of occupational exposure to benzene, toluene, xylene,
styrene, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene. The importance of
adequate selection of indicator, matrix and sampling time is pointed out.
Own results are compared with the existing biological exposure indices. The
need for actual and strict application of biological exposure indices is
emphasized from the point of view of workers' health protection.

Occupationally Exposed to Benzene

Summary: The aim of the study was to assess whether or not
chronicexposure to low levels of benzene less than MAC for Croatia of 15ppm
has a genotoxic and/or hematotoxic effect. Exposure tobenzene was confirmed
by means of biological and ambientalmonitoring in 41 female workers
employed in the shoe industry, asin 40 controls. Cytogenetic and
hematological analyses were alsoperformed. The significantly higher
frequencies in acentricfragments (p<0.001) and in sister chromatid
exchanges (p<0.001)and lower haemoglobin (p<0.01), lower total number of
leucocytes(p<0.05) and lymphocytes (p<0.001) in the exposed compared to
thecontrol group indicate the need to lower the benzeneconcentration in the
working atmosphere. These results can servealso as a warning of the
possible risk even in low level benzeneexposure.

Low Concentrations of Toluene

Summary: Visual evoked potentials (VEP), cognitive evoked
potentials(VEP-P300) and brain stem evoked potentials (BAEP) wereperformed
in two groups of subjects: 49 workers in aprinting-press and 59 controls.
The extent of exposure totoluene was evaluated by determining toluene
concentrations inperipheral blood and hippuric acid and o-cresol in urine.
In theexposed group VEP showed significantly higher amplitudes for N75,P100
and N145 waves and significantly higher latency for P100wave; VEP-P300
showed significantly higher amplitudes for P300Fwave and number of negative
differences in amplitudes for P300R -P300F; BAEP showed significantly
higher amplitudes for P1 waveand latency intervals for P1 - P2 and
significantly decreasedlatency for P1 wave and amplitude for P2 wave.

Summary: Colour vision was examined by the Lanthony-D-15
desaturation test in two groups of workrs occupationally exposed to toluene
(Group R comprised 38 and Group S 41 subjects) and in a control nonexposed
group of 83 subjects.
The results of the study indicate that exposed workers had more frequently
quantitative (p<0.0001), and qualitative (p<0.005) colour vision impairment
in comparison to nonexposed group.
The subjects (Group R) exposed to a mean value of toluene in the air of 156
ppm, had more frequently quantitative (p<0.0001) and qualitative (p<0.005)
colour vision impairment in comparison with those exposed to toluene in air
of 35 ppm.

Summary: Schiff bases of salicylaldehyde and
2-aminopyridine,3-aminomethylpyridine and 2,3-diaminopyridine were
synthetized. The mono and bis Schiff bases of diamine did not show tendency
toform dihydroimidazole and imidazole rings. All bases formcomplexes with
Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II). Metal to ligandratios of complexes in
ethanolic solutions were ML and ML2.Stability decreases in order Cu>Ni>Co.
