Summary: In order to investigate possible genetic damage resulting fromoccupational exposure to benzene, structural chromosomeaberrations and sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in peripheralblood were examined in female workers (N=41) employed in the shoeindustry. Occupational exposure was confirmed by biological andambiental monitoring. The control group (N=40) consisted offemales without exposure to solvents. A cytogenetic study showedthe prevalence of chromosome-type aberrations (acentricfragments) in exposed subjects. A statistically significantdifference in SCEs (p<0.001) was found between the exposed andcontrol group. The results could serve as a warning of thepossible genotoxic risk to workers occupationally exposed even tolow benzene concentrations (<15 ppm).

Summary: Organic solvents comprise a large and heterogenous group ofchemicals, largely belonging to volatile hydrocarbons. Long-termexposure to solvents as a cause of the central nervous systemimpairment has been a subject of extensive epidemiological andclinical studies for years, but often with inconsistent results. In 1985 the World Health Organization published the criteria forthe evaluation of neurotoxic effects of solvents that are nowcommonly accepted. This paper is a short review of the currentstate of knowledge in the field emphasizing the role ofneuropsychological methods in assessing solvent toxicity.
Keywords: neuropsychological tests, neurotoxic effects of exposure, central nervous system impairments, organic solvents

Summary: Early detection of benzene haematotoxicity includes thedetermination of benzene concentration in the atmosphere, themonitoring of benzene metabolites and laboratory tests. Essentialtests are a complete blood count including red cell indices andserum iron. Chromosomal aberrations and sister chromatidexchange, alkaline phosphatase in neutrophils, bone marowgranulocyte reserve, glycerol haemolysis time, serumimmunoglobulins, lymphocytes subpopulations and blood cellagglutinins are potentially valuable although not fullyevaluated. Alterations in any of these indicators are notpathognomonic and therefore should be interpreted at the sametime and with caution.
Keywords: haematotoxicity, exposure to benzene, laboratory tests, biological monitoring, occupational exposure

Summary: The aim of the study was to assess whether or not chronicexposure to low levels of benzene less than MAC for Croatia of 15ppm has a genotoxic and/or hematotoxic effect. Exposure tobenzene was confirmed by means of biological and ambientalmonitoring in 41 female workers employed in the shoe industry, asin 40 controls. Cytogenetic and hematological analyses were alsoperformed. The significantly higher frequencies in acentricfragments (p<0.001) and in sister chromatid exchanges (p<0.001)and lower haemoglobin (p<0.01), lower total number of leucocytes(p<0.05) and lymphocytes (p<0.001) in the exposed compared to thecontrol group indicate the need to lower the benzeneconcentration in the working atmosphere. These results can servealso as a warning of the possible risk even in low level benzeneexposure.

Title: Evoked Brain Potentials in Persons Exposed to Long-Term Low Concentrations of Toluene
Faculty: Medicinski fakultet Sveučilište u Zagrebu
    Date of defense: 10/07/93
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 90
Summary: Visual evoked potentials (VEP), cognitive evoked potentials(VEP-P300) and brain stem evoked potentials (BAEP) wereperformed in two groups of subjects: 49 workers in aprinting-press and 59 controls. The extent of exposure totoluene was evaluated by determining toluene concentrations inperipheral blood and hippuric acid and o-cresol in urine. In theexposed group VEP showed significantly higher amplitudes for N75,P100 and N145 waves and significantly higher latency for P100wave; VEP-P300 showed significantly higher amplitudes for P300Fwave and number of negative differences in amplitudes for P300R -P300F; BAEP showed significantly higher amplitudes for P1 waveand latency intervals for P1 - P2 and significantly decreasedlatency for P1 wave and amplitude for P2 wave.
Keywords: neurotoxicity, organic solvents, toluene, evoked potentials, visual evoked potentials (VEP), cognitive evoked potentials (VEP-P300), brain stem evoked potentials (BAEP)

Title: Examination of Colour Vision in Workers Exposed to Toluene
Faculty: Institut za medicinska istraživanja i medicinu rada Sveučilište u Zagrebu
    Date of defense: 02/02/95
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 68
Summary: Colour vision was examined by the Lanthony-D-15 desaturation test in two groups of workrs occupationally exposed to toluene (Group R comprised 38 and Group S 41 subjects) and in a control nonexposed group of 83 subjects. The results of the study indicate that exposed workers had more frequently quantitative (p<0.0001), and qualitative (p<0.005) colour vision impairment in comparison to nonexposed group. The subjects (Group R) exposed to a mean value of toluene in the air of 156 ppm, had more frequently quantitative (p<0.0001) and qualitative (p<0.005) colour vision impairment in comparison with those exposed to toluene in air of 35 ppm.
Keywords: qualitative colour vision, quantitative colour vision, Lanthony-D-15 desaturated test, toluene
