Summary: Forced expiratory volumes and flows (forced vital capacity (FVC), Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV), peak expiratory flow (PEF), maximal expiratory flow at 25% (MEF25%), 50% (MEF50%) and 75% (MEF75%) of the FVC) have been measured in 909 healthy nonsmoking men and women, ranging in age from 18-86 yrs, who live on Eastern Adriatic islands (Yugoslavia). This area is essentially free from air pollution. The results have been analysed in terms of age and height and regression equations for each sex were derived. The equations for FVC and FEV1 were reliable and those for forced expiratory flow were not. Comparisons were made with prediction equations derived for other populations, especially with those which are commonly used in daily medical practice.

Summary: Active Anterior Rhinomanometry using a Mercury Electronic NR6 Rhinomanometer was carried out on 70 subjects. The subjects were healthy, of both sexes, and aged 17-45; objective rhinoscopic and fibrescopic examination showed disturbed nose breathing. The subjects were examined before decongestion; then 4 drops of 1% Neo SyneprineR was put in each nose, and the subjects were examined again 10-15 minutes after decongestion. All the subjects were examined under similar conditions of air humidity and temperature. Nasal airway resistance of right and left nose ranged from 0.386 to 0.291 Pacm3s-1 before decongestion and from 0.34 to 0.207 Pacm3s-1 after decongestion. Statistical analysis was carried out with Non-parametric Methods for paired samples. Nasal resistance (Rn) and total nasal resistance (TRn) were significantly lower after decongestion of the nasal mucosa than before. Rn and TRn were higher during expiration than during inspiration. The results are compared with those similar studies in the literature.

Summary: One hundred and fory-five paine patiens were tested for the presence of presonality traits connected with psychologic vulnerability, traits often found among chronic back -pain patients. All patients in the experimental group and the helthy individuals in control group were tested with Patient Pain Drawing test (PPD)and with Minnesota Multhi phasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) on the scales hypochondiasis (Hs), depression (D), and Hysteria (Hy). The patiant group differed significantly from the control group on average Hs, D, Hy scores and on the quantified PPD (measuring somatization proneness). The Patients with the higher PPD scores had the highest values on MMPI (Hs, D, Hy), and patients with low scores on the PPD -indicating low tendency to somatize- had MMPI values that personality may influence the individual's tendency to somatize and express psychic and psychosocial problems as somatic pain.

Summary: Intentions of present investigations were: a) to describe the basic properties of the general simulation models and b) to underline specificity of a cybernetic model aplication in description of bio-systems. Living systems, whether individuals or populations have characteristics of bio- systems and should be analyzed accordingly. As an example for cybernetic model construction authors selected previously published own data on demography of island Pag. The obtained results suggest that application of the cybernetic model to investigate bio-system will be of considerable interest.

    Language: hrvatski
Summary: Nine children with acute posterior uveitis were treated for period of 3 years (3.2% of all children treated during that period). The authors speak in favor of the investigation of the HLA-system and analysis of humoral and cellular immunologic parameters. In this study they present the relationship between these characteristcs and the clinical diagnosis. Three of 9 children have with eye diseases associated HLA-B5 and HLA-B12 antigens and grave consequences for sight of both eyes already as children. The results of immunologic tests in the examined group compared to the control group differ significantly in total number of B lymphocytes and serum values of IgG, as well as C3 values of complement component (P<0.05). Seen in percentage, however, the ratio of T to B lymphocytes , as well as the total number of leukocytes don't show significant differences. We consider that a proper and well-aimed history and complete etiological detection according to the protocol have contributed to a clearer understanding and better insight into the prognosis of our patients.

Summary: Morphometry of the second, third and fourth metacarpal bone was performed on hand-wrist radiograms of both hands in a sample of 434 male and 549 female adult subjects. Morphometric data (bone length-L, total diaphysis width-T and medullary canal width-M) and age were processed using principal factor analysis with oblique rotation, separately for males and females. In both sexes three factors accounting for 74.7% of the total variance were extracted, but their patterns of variation differed. Factors "cumulative environmental-genetic factor", "longitudinal factor", and "transversal factor" are discussed within the context of their biological meaning affecting the phenotypic formation of metacarpal skeleton in a given population.

    Pages: from 161 to 167
    Number of references: 19
    Language: engleski
Summary: The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of evaporating aromatic hydrocarbons, styrene, xylene and benzene on the survival of the snails Amphimelania halandri Fer and Lymnaea strangalis L. as well as the crustaceans Asselus aquaticus L. and Gammarus fossarum Koch. Tests were carried out during acute poisoning (120 hours) in laboratory conditions. In the tests certain physico-chemical parameters linked to toxic effect of the examined compound were measured: water temperature, pH, total hardness and oxygen concentration. Although the measured values of the above parameters agree with the data of the other authors, in our tests we did not observe any dependence, apart from oxygen, the lack of which had to be compensated for by aeration.

Summary: This study, based on a sample of our urban population, has been undertaken aiming to assess the role of fibrinogen in coronary heart disease. A total of 176 subjects (115 males and 61 females) were included in this study. Of these subjects, a total of 84 persons were ill, but without coronary heart disease in their case histories. Descriptive statistics and Principal Component Analysis were carried out using variables as it follows: fibrinogen, the total cholesterol values (CH), triglycerides (TG) high density lipoproteins (HDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL), the atherosclerosis Index (LDL/HDL) and Established Risk Factor (ERF= CH/HDL). In total space in the Principal Component Analysis three dominant factors were seen which explains altogether 71.5% variances. Increase in fibrinogen level correlates with factor two and three (the protective factor and the age factor respectively). The factors (2 and 3) do not correlate with risk factors LDL/HDL and ERF. The presented investigation have shown the importance of the factor analysis, since univariate methods may lead to mistakes in the interpretation of the role of individual variables, depending on what extent any of the factors mentioned is presented in the sample.

Summary: The paper presents the immunogenecity of hepatitis vaccine (obtained by genetic engineering) in imunocompromised patients with preterminal renal insufficiency defined by depression of creatine clearance of 10 to 25 ml/min. This study consisted of 28 randomized patients with impaired renal function. Sixteen patients received a single dose and, twelve a double dose of vaccine. Revaccination following 3 intramuscular doses of vaccine had been undertaken after 24 weeks if antibodies were not detected or their titer was 10 i.u. or less. All patients obtained a booster dose following 52 weeks . There was no statistically significant difference in titer values between immunocompromised patients regardless of whether they were vaccinated with a single or double dose. The antibody titer in patients with chronic renal insufficiency was significantly lower as compared with the results of vaccination in healthy population. It may be concluded that it is more beneficial and less expensive to use a single dose vaccine and revaccination if the titer is negative or insufficiently high.

Title: Mathemaical Aspects of Intraocular Volume and Pressure Relation

    Authors:
    Štambuk, Nikola (160463)
Journal: Math. Modeling and Sci. Computing
    Volume: 2
    Year: 1993
    Pages: from 580 to 585
    Number of references: 13
    Language: engleski
Summary: It is shown that simple first-orfer nonlinear difference equations may be applied to define and simulate, according to Hooke's law, the intraocular volume (V) and pressure (P) relationship during distension of the eye coats, as well as dynamical behaviour of tje coeffients of outflow facility (C) and ocular rigidity (K). By means of mathematical symulation new and corrected tonomeric and tonographic tables, experimentally verified, are given. A new parameter, kinetic coefficient of the barrier's (protein) mass transfer (k) is introduced and its relationship to the aqueous humor outflow facility is observed. The mathematical aspects of the structural and functional behaviour of the biomedical compartmental systems, exposed to the internal and external volume and pressure changes, are briefly discussed.

Summary: The objective of this study is to explore the possibility of implementation of McBride's rating scale in invalidity reevaluation. A random sample of recently retired disabled persons (N=98) was selected from regions where the number of approved pensioners (1989-1990) was above average for the Republic Croatia. Those who responded (N=71) were divided in two groups: correctly and incorrectly assessed. The correctness of decisions by First Degree Commissions was reexamined. McBride's rating scale was implemented to the each group separately, and the rating compared between the correctly and incorrectly assessed groups. Statistical analyses included descriptive methods, chi-square tests, correlation analyses, analyses of covariance and canonical discrimination analysis. There was significant statistical difference in McBride's rating between the groups. In disability assessment significant difference were found in McBride's ratings of anatomic and physiological tissue damage, clinical manifestation security and endurance.

    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 212
Summary: An epidemiological system of the dynamics of infectious diseases was worked out, consisting of a data base and general simulation model of the dynamics of infectious diseases. The data base includes data on populations on which the dynamics and epidemiological parameters which characterize certain diseases will be simulated. Data from this basis are input parameters into general simulation model. By using the model it is possible to simulate the natural course of diseases and the various preventive measures and other interventions by man on the course of disease. The validity of the model is shown in the data on the movement of infectious diseases in the Trešnjevka community in Zagreb during period from 1961 to 1991. Acutely infectious diseases were chosen for which vaccination is obligatory, A and B hepatitis. In the case of well defined parameter it was shown that the model successfully simulates various epidemiological situations.
