Summary: The aim of this investigation is the study of biogenetic
compounds: 1) guanidine substances and 2) purines, and its specific role
in the etiology of diabetes mellitus. The research on guanidine compounds,
particularly creatine, should clarify the exact role of this class of
biogenetic substances and its influence on the glucose metabolism in
diabetics. Investigation of the oxidative products of purine metabolism,
particularly of uric acid, would enable the evaluation of the biogenetic
hypothesis which postulates that alloxan, the product of uric acid
oxidation, is the responsible species which causes the irreversible damage
of the B - cell of Langerhans islets.
Research goals: Specific goals: 1. The goal of the investigation was
to establish the role ofbiogenetic guanidine compounds on glucose and
insulin homeostasisin diabetics. 2. The goal of the investigation was to
prove thehypothesis on the relation between the B-cytotoxic products
ofpurine oxidation and etiology of diabetes mellitus. Investigations of
biogenetic compounds and the relationshipbetween the chemical structure
and biological activity areprovocative targets in biochemical and
medicinal research, with afar reaching importance in both etiology and
therapy of diabetesmellitus.
