Summary: In medical practice aryloxycarbonic acid derivatives have beensolely used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. Recently wepatented the use of some of these derivatives in the treatment ofdermatological diseases. Further analyses showed that thesesubstances stimulated various cells of mesodermal originincluding lymphocytes, the principal cells of the immune system.Depending on the concentration some derivatives ofaryloxycarbonic acid stimulated or suppressed the proliferativeresponse of lymphocytes, pointing to the possible use of thesedrugs as immunomodulators in clinical practice as well.

Summary: Total of 321 preterm/term newborns delivered in normal singletonvaginal deliveries was studied. Babies were divided into twogroups. The first one includes 62 newborns with single, isolatedclinical sign: stinking amniotic fluid or intrapartal maternalfebrility (>= 38C) or duration of delivery > 12 hours. The secondone (control group) contained 259 newborns with no such a sign.In both groups the umbilical cord blood IgG, IgM and IgAconcentrations were quantified by RID. The obtained results didnot express significant differences in the mean IgG, IgM and IgAumblilical cord blood concentrations between the two groups.

Summary: A numerical diagnostic key for the identification ofgram-negative fermentative bacteria is described. Unknown strainswere inoculated into a routine biochemical set. Points wereassigned to positive reactions and the score of thirteen testswas added up, after which the identification of the strain wasobtained from the key. Final identification using this numericalkey was obtained in 67.48% strains, while in the remaining ones asmall number of additional biochemical test was required todistinguish between strains giving the same score in the routineset of biochemical tests.

Summary: Antibiotics, in addition to killing or inhibiting the growth ofmicroorganisms, may also affect the immune response in many ways.Such effects may be clinically relevant especially when animpairment of immunological functions is seen. This study wasdesigned to analyse the influence of various groups ofantibiotics on the host defence system. We also analysed theantimicrobial effectiveness of the same antibiotics on over 2800bacterial strains isolated from our clinical material.Praliminary finding show that a correlation exists between theeffect of antibiotics on the immune response and the appearanceof resistance in bacteria to these antibiotics.

Sucheffects may be clinically relevant especially in the case wherean impairment of immunological functions is seen. Therefore, wedecided to study the influence of various groups of antibioticson the host defence system by using different tests in vitro onhuman or animal cells and in vivo on animal model. the resultswere compared with the results obtained in analysing theantibiograms, i.e. the antimicrobial effectiveness of the sameantibiotics.

Summary: Patients with venous leg ulcer were treated with aryloxycarbonicacid derivatives (ACA). The results were very encouraging. In aseries of new tests we whowed that these supstances have noantimicrobial activity in the used concentrations so that healingcan not be argued to be potentiated through this mechanism. However, at the same time we demonstrated that these supstancesstimulate regeneration of cells and tissues of mesodermal originincluding the proliferative response of peripheral bloodlymphocytes.

Summary: Data were presented showing the frequency of pathogenes isolatedduring nosocomial infections, as well as, the results ofantimicrobial effectiveness testing. The most frequently isolatedspecies belong to the genus Staphylococcus and gram-negativerods. Through the mentioned period the antimicrobialsusceptibility of gram-positive bacteria showed a marked increasein the number of resistant strains to sulfamethoxazole, TMP-SMX,ceftriaxone and cefuroxime. Gram-negative fermentative bacteriaare becoming significantly more resistant to ampicillin andcarbenicillin and the nonfermentative to netilmicin, ceftriaxoneand ceftazidime.

Summary: In our laboratory Listeria monocytogenes infection was studied in BALB/c and C57Bl/6 mice depleted of CD8+, CD4+ and NK cells. Mice depleted of different T cell subpopulations remained capable of resolving a primary infection. However, the absence of CD8+ T cells, resulted in slower resolution of the infection. On the other hand NK cells seem to have no influence on the resolution of this intracellular infection.

Summary: We analyzed the primary infection with L.monocytogenes in BALB/c, C57Bl/6 and beta2M-/- mice, depleted of different cell populations. Mice depleted of different T cell subpopulations remained capable of resolving a primary infection as well as was in the case of beta2M-/- mice. In the case of pregnant mice it seems that L.monocytogenes can traverse the placental barrier very soon after exposure. This was proved during different periods of gastation by fetal resorption, abortion, stillbirth or neonatal infection.

Summary: We analyzed the effects of in vivo depletion of NK and different T cell populations, on clearance of L.monocytogenes in the liver and spleen, during primary infection in BALB/c, C57Bl/6 and beta2M-/- mice. In vivo depletion of NK cells in C57Bl/6 mice did not influence the course of primary listeriosis. After in vivo administration of anti-CD4 mAb, anti-CD8 mAb or a combination of both mAbs, mice remained capable of resolving the primary L.monocytogenes infection, but the duration was prolonged.

Summary: Physiological differences in adherence and spreading ofperitoneal macrophages in four strains of mice were analyzed. Theinfluence of different antibiotics on these functions was alsoexamined. The changes in adherence were seen in mice treated withtherapeutic doses of penicillin G and cefotaxime. Cefotaxime, streptomycin and lincomycin in the therapeutic dose as well asceftazidime and lincomycin in a four fold higher dose influencedthe spreading of those cells.

    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 98
Summary: The influence of some beta-lactam, macrolide and aminoglycozideantibiotics on the proliferative response of B lymphocytesinduced by pokeweed mitogen was examined. The results werecompered with the appearance of the bacterial resistance againstthe same antibiotics in clinical practise. The changes in theproliferation were obtained in experiments with ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, streptomycin, netilmicin and erythromycine.Interestingly, the observed increase of the resistance is sloweragainst antibiotics with stimulatory effect on the proliferationof B lymphocytes (ceftazidime and erythromycine).

    Number of pages: 106
Summary: The effect of different antibiotics on the proliferation of Tlymphocytes induced with policlonal mitogens was analyzed. Theresults showed that beta-lactam antibiotics, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines and lincosamides suppress the proliferativeresponse of lymphocytes in a dose dependent manner. The mostoften used macrolide, erythromycine stimulated the T cellpopulation while azitromycin had no immunomodulatory effect.

Summary: Protection against intracellular pathogens often requires the induction of a pathogen-specific T-cell-mediated immune response. To investigate the role of T cell subsets in resistance to primary infection with L.monocytogenes, we depleted different strains of mice (BALB/c, C57Bl/6, beta2M-/-) of CD4+ and/or CD8+ T cells, in vivo, by administration of specific mAbs. We found that all mice, even beta2 microglobulin deficient mice, which lack CD8+ lymphocytes, remained capable to eliminate the primary L.monocytogenes infection, indicating the involvement of other defence mechanisms.
