Summary: 24-hour polysomnographic recording in 10 male
schizophrenics aged 22-41 indicated that total sleep time was significantly
higher during acute phase of the illness, with lower proportion of night
sleep. Light sleep, especially stage one, prevailed. Daily alertness was
poor with many sequences or short episodes of drowsiness or sleep. During
remission proportion of night sleep raised, and daily alertness improved.
Daily REM episodes, frequent in the acute phase of the illness, disappeared
in remission.
Keywords: schizophrenia, polysomnography, alertness, sleep, REM sleep
Title: 24-hour vigilance in demented elderly

Summary: Night sleep vigilance profile in 22 demented elderly (14
SDAT, 8 VD) aged 70 to 85 was polysomnographically explored during two
consecutive nights by using ambulatory Medilog 9000 polysomnographic
system. Daily polysomnographic recording was also done, so the daily
alertness could be analyzed. The results show that demented elderly
patients have very disturbed, mostly fragmented, night sleep with very
frequent wakings. A low proportion of the deep stages III and IV or REM
stage was also noted, but not so prominently as the fragmentation and
vigilance fluctuation of night sleep.

Title: Clock drawing test in demented elderly on awakening after
NREM and REM sleep

Summary: Clock Drawing Test (CDT) in demented patients upon
awakening from the NREM sleep differs from CDT in the same patients upon
awakening from the REM phase. In the latter case the results of the test
are similar to, or even better than, the results of the test applied at
daily alertness. The subjects were 10 patients with dementia of Alzheimer
type (DAT) and 5 patients with multiinfarct dementia (MID). The results
point at a more marked damage of the left hemisphere of the brain,
especially in the group of DAT patients.
Keywords: CDT (Clock Drawing Test), dementia, Alzheimer, MID, sleep, REM phase
