Summary: Eighteen obese patients with obstructive sleep apnea
syndrome and five obese persons with no apnea crises have been
polysomnographically assessed. The results show that the patients with
apnea syndrome sleep very badly, along with apneas. Vigilance profile
during sleep is similar in both tested groups, the suppression of
restitutive stages of sleep (III, IV, REM) is the dominant characteristic
of vigilance during sleep. Relatively prolonged sleep latency in obese
persons without apnea syndrome indicates, however, restitutively higher
quality of their nocturnal sleep.

Summary: A short overall picture of the health care of the elderly
in Croatia is given. Some statistical data regarding elderly are presented
according to the 1991 census. There are no precise data as to diagnostic
categories regarding mental condition of old persons, but there is no doubt
that chronic psychiatric disturbances are among most numerous. It is
estimated that 3.6% of the elderly in Croatia need to be institutionalized.
They are cared for in psychiatric hospitals, psychiatric wards of general
hospitals, social institutions, and, majority of them, in homes for the
aged.

Summary: The disturbed cyclic organization of night sleep in
demented elderly might be a consequence of a poor daily alertness, i.e.
aconsequence of generally disturbed sleep-wake rhythm in these patients.
There were no significant differences in sleep-wake vigilance profile
between the two dementia subgroups (senile dementia of Alzheimer type,
vascular dementia).

Summary: Activity of paraoxonase was measured in serums of healthy
persons (45) and demented persons (SDAT (45), VD (12), mixed type (17).
Mean age was 67 for healthy and 78 for demented persons. There were 89
females and 30 males. Activity was measured according to paraoxon as a
substrate in the absence and presence of EDTA. The results indicated that
the means of measured activities of paraoxonase were lower in serums of
demented persons than in healthy persons.

description of the current health care of the elderly, critical review of
diagnostics of dementia in the elderly and disorganization of health care

Journal: IPA Service Delivery Symposium - Proceeding Book, in press
Year: 1995
Number of references: 8
Language: engleski
Summary: At the invitation by the Service Delivery Symposium within
the 7th IPA Congress in Sydney from 29 October to 3 November 1995, the
actual psychogeriatric situation in Croatia is presented, with a special
review of the health care of demented persons. While in rural regions of
Croatia the elderly are mostly cared for by their family members, there is
a certain disorganization in the health care for demented elderly in the
cities because there are no special forms of treating persons suffering
from senile dementia. The author points at the changes in this field of
health care which will take place in near future, emphasizing some real
difficulties, among them the consequences of the aggression against
Croatia.
