Summary: This study assessed the possibilities and range of
transrectal endosonography in the diagnosis, staging, follow-up and
discovery of relapses in patients with rectal carcinoma. Transrectal
endosonography was compared with standard methods (CT, endoscopy with
biopsy). The study included patients with verified rectal carcinoma,
including a subgroup of patients with malignantly altered pseudopolips
after long-time ulcerative proctitits. As a control method in staging, the
findings of intraoperative biopsies as well as pathological examination of
the resected bowel were used (exact assessment of the size and margins of
the pathological process, degree of affection of the intestinal wall and
perirectal fat as well as lymph node involvment.
Keywords: rectal neoplasms, neoplasm staging, local and distant metastases, ultrasonic diagnosis, transrectal endosonography, predictive value
Research goals: The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity
of transrectal endosonography when compared to the pathohistological
findings of the resected bowel area affected with the malignant process as
well as comparing endosonography with CT when evaluating affection of
perirectal tissue and lymph node involvment. Other information about the project.
