Summary: Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) is a chronical and
progressive disease of kidneys with death outcome. Ethiology and
pathogenesis are unknown. No doubt the disease exists in rural area,
avoiding towns, both the autochonous inhabitants and seltlers are affected
by it. Thus speaking in favour of harmful influence of the environment on
the health of people. The observation of the frequency of the disease in
the long span of time enables the insight into its dynamics as well as into
conception if the disease is spreading out of its focus or if it is
vanishing in the places where it had been present. This knowledge could be
significant contribution to enlightening of ethiology. On the bases of
hospital records and Death records office as well as cytological analysis
of urine sediment the degree on the bond of BEN and epithel tumours of
pyelon and urethers will be estimated. The examination of kidneys by
ultrasound is predicted. All inhabitants of Kaniža village under 30 will be
examined in this way because of the comparison with the same findings 5
years ago. While this is being done the attention will be focused on
possible decrease of kidney body, especially parenhim.
Keywords: Balkan endemic nephropathy, incidence, prevalence, specific death rate, tumours.
Research goals: Observe the frequency of the disease in the existing
endemicfocus through longer period of time as well as possiblephenomenon
of spreading to the neighbouring villages. The changeof intensity of
endemia or even its cyclic appearance can besignificant argument in favour
of understanding it as the diseaseof the natural focus. On the contrary if
the disease remainsconstantly present with more or less the same
intensity, ifit does not disappear not even in one village or in one part
ofthe area in focus and if it does not appear in a new area, thearguments
will speak in favour of untransferable agentrespectivelly toxin. Find the
frequency of epithel tumours of urethers in endemic as well as in control
area.
