Summary: The effect of four hypolipidemic agents with different
mechanismsof action (fenofibrate, probucol, colestipol and nicotinic
acid)on plasma and liver cholinesterase has been studied. Liver weightand
liver weight/body weight ratio increased only after treatmentwith
fenofibrate. Plasma and liver cholinesterase activityincreased markedly
after fenofibrate, a strong peroxisomeproliferator, and slightly after
nicotinic acid, a weakperoxisome proliferator. The data obtained suggest
that increasedcholinesterase activity is due to increased rate of fatty
acidoxidation caused by peroxisome proliferators.

Summary: Pseudocholinesterase (PChE) activity in plasma, liver,
pancreasand adipose tissue of alloxan-diabetic rats has been determined.48
hours after the induction of diabetes an increase of PChEactivity in plasma
and a decrease in liver and adipose tissue wasobserved. After that, the
activity in plasma remained at the samelevel, in the liver it slowly rose
to the control values and inadipose tissue significantly increased beyond
the control values.Significant changes of PChE activity in the pancreas
were notnoticed. Female rats had higher PChE activity in plasma and
liverthat the male, but in the pancreas and adipose tissue there wereno sex
differences. On the basis of our results it seems possibleto propose that
PChE is synthesized also in adipose tissue, butthe synthesis is regulated
by different mechanisms than those inthe liver.
