Summary: THE AIM OF THE STUDY IS TO IDENTIFY PATIENT INFORMATION NEEDS AND SOURCES. A SURVEY WAS CARRIED OUT INCLUDING 178 PATIENTS IN 6 ZAGREB UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS. RESULTS SHOW THAT HOSPITAL LIBRARIES HAVE NO ROLE IN PATIENT INFORMATION. THERE IS A GAP IN THE PROVISION OF PATIENT ORIENTED PUBLICATIONS. PHYSICIANS ARE STILL THE MOST IMPORTANT AND ALMOST EXCLUSIVE SOURCE OF INFORMATION. ELEMENTS AFFECTING PATIENT INFORMATION ARE NOT ONLY INHERENT TO MEDICINE BUT TO THE SOCIETY AS A WHOLE. CROATIAN NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM DID NOT ENCOURAGE INFORMATION-SEEKING BEHAVIOR AT ALL. PATIENT EDUCATION SHOULD BE BASED ON A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH INVOLVING PHYSICIANS, LIBRARIANS AND BOOK EDITORS.

Summary: Autarkic and extensive development of medicine together withinsufficient economic development causes inadequate developmentof information infrastructure. The characteristics of so-calledscientific periphery and dependence on scientific informationimport requires modern information technology. The current statusof medical libraries in Croatia and Yugoslavia with respect tomany indicators (number of professional staff, foreignperiodicals, indexes and the range of library services) isunsatisfactory. The System of Biomedical Scientific Informationintroduces an organized approach to biomedical users. The aim ofthe System is to ensure the flow of foreign biomedicalinformation and literature and the bibliographic control ofnational publication output. The System is based on the existinginstitutional background and most of all promotes libraries'cooperation. Using international standards in its database andlibrary services the System supports professionalism in medicallibraries.

Summary: Research activity of an institution can be measured by the numberand type of its publications. The bibliography of the sourceitems published by faculty members of the Zagreb UniversitySchool of Medicine in the journals indexed by Science CitationIndex (SCI), in the period between 1989 and 1991, was analysed. When the number of articles published (190) was related to thenumber of faculty members (386), the result was 0,49 articles permember. All article-type bibliography items were classifiedaccording to Journal Citation Reports (JCR) subject categories. The greatest number of articles was published in the fields ofpharmacology and pharmacy (26), biochemistry and molecularbiology (13), neurosciences (11) and radiology and nuclearmedicine (11). In the genetics, immunology, cytology andhistology (including biology of the cell) and microbiologysubject categories journals the number of articles was thesmallest. In the physiology group of journals there was noarticle published. Research activity being only a part of overallSchool of Medicine activities, its share of 14,9% in the totalZagreb scientific institutions SCI publications number, may beconsidered a satisfactory result.

Title: System of biomedical scientific information and automation in Croatian medical libraries

    Authors:
    Bekavac, Anamarija (134850)
    Journal: Informatologia
    Number: 3
    ISSN: 1330-0067

    Year: 1992
    Pages: from 137 to 142
    Number of references: 7
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: This paper examines one aspect of relation between thepossibilities of information availability in Croatian medicallibraries and System of Biomedical Scientific Information. Ourinterest is focused on development of automation in libraries andits influence on their possibility to follow qualitativeimprovement offered by the System. As automation is the basis ofmodern access to information it also indicates the range oflibrary services. The data were obtained by a questionnairesurvey conducted in 24 Croatian medical libraries. Results showthat the state of automation in libraries is inadequate for usageof the System. The concept of library development is greatlyinfluenced by parent institution. Interlibrary connections becomevery important for promoting an indipendent library development.

    Title:

    Authors:
    Petrak, Jelka (147472)
    Bekavac, Anamarija (134850)
Journal: Newsletter to European Health Librarians
    Number: 25
    ISSN: 1011-8454
    Year: 1993
    Pages: from 11 to 13
    Language: engleski
Summary: Croatia has a very distinguished bibliographic tradition in thefield of medicine. In 1980 the development of the YugoslavBiomedical Information System was started. The two main goalswere to ensure both the bibliographic control of localinformation sources and better access to foreign literature inlocal medical libraries. Since 1992 Croatia has been developingthe System independently. The 28 Croatian medical librariescooperate efficiently within the System. National bibliographicdatabase Biomedicina Croatica has been maintained and has about13,000 bibliographic records by now. The Union List of MedicalPeriodicals in Croatian Libraries, a factual database, has alsobeen maintained and updated annually. The development of theSystem copes with the problem of inadequate informationinfrastructure, lack of elementary equipment and undefined roleof National and University Library in relation to other centraluniversity libraries. Croatian Academic and Research Network(CARNet) will be available to academic and research librariesonly which will increase the difference in quality and quantityof services between them and other medical libraries. Thedevelopment of medical libraries and their System is dependent onwider social context which is outside the control of individuallibrary or its parent institution.

Summary: Scientific communication proceeds in two directions: scientistsboth generate and receive (use) information. The aim of thisresearch is to determine the extent to which the language of ascientifically peripheral country - Croatia, represents a barrierin the communication with the world scientific community and ifthere is a relationship between the language of a research paperand its quality. The effect of the language of a research paperis studied in relation to both aspects of scientificcommunication: information generation (1st relation) andinformation use (2nd relation). The first relation was studied ona sample of research papers produced in Croatia. In order toexamine the relation quantity (papers in Croatian) - quality(papers in major world language) two indicators of quality wereused: citedness of the papers in the sample and authors' ownassessment obtained from a survey. The second relation wasstudied on the basis of an analysis of the library collection andthe use of journals in the largest medical library in Croatia. The results show that as far as the 2nd relation is concerned, the language is not a barrier, but the study of the 1st relationshow that papers written in Croatian are neither cited norranked among the top ones by their authors. This points to aconclusion that the language of a scientifically peripheralcommunity used in a research paper is an intentionally chosenbarrier in the communication with the world which hindersworldwide verification and affects the quality of researchpapers.

    Held: from 09/23/92 to 09/26/92
Summary: European 1992 - is the year of political integration anddisegrations. For Croatia this year means the break with acertain state structure (Yugoslavia) and a certain socialstructute (the so-called real-socialism). By its urge foraffirmation, Croatia is no different from any other smallEuropean nation and her strong regional particularities arecertainly going to be the basis of this affirmation. However, biomedicine and information transfer are in themselves notnationally determined. The paper describes the state of biomedical sciences in Croatiain comparison to comparable European countries (particularythrough the number of published information) as well as thepresent state and the possible development of biomedicalinformation infrastructure. The conspicuous dependence upon the import of biomedicalinformation on one hand and the need for bibliographic controland access to the local information sources on the other hand, speak for the efficient local organization, but also for a widerregional and/or international co-operation. In her search forbetter solutions in the future, Croatia will be in need of theexperiences and help of better developed.

Summary: In 1989 Central Medical Library of the Faculty of Medicine inZagreb introduced on-line searches of biomedical databases (viahost DIMDI in Koeln) and CD ROM searches (Medline, Embase andSCISearch) in its library service. From July 1, 1989 to April 1,1991 we had 338 on-line and 693 CD ROM searches. In order to evaluate the usage of new media we send aquestionnaire to their users. Structure of the users, reasons forsearching and cost effectiveness were analysed. We also enquiredhow well our library users were informed about accessability ofbiomedical databases at the Faculty of Medicine. Results show that new media changed the structure of libraryusers and attracted physicians from other institutions and townsespecially when writing master or doctoral theses. Greatestnumber of requests was from preclinical subjects. The cost ofsearches was acceptable to most users. Medical professionals werepoorely informed about new services in the library. The future development of Central Medical Library has to be seenin wider context since it has become a biomedical informationcenter for the whole Croatia.
