Summary: The main goal of the Croatian Biomedical Information
System is to overcome communication barrier towards international
scientific community which is a characteristic of so-called scientific
periphery. The System is aimed to improve information flow and availability
of foreign sources and to introduce bibliographic control of national
source publications. The cooperation within the System includes 28 Croatian
medical libraries. Central Medical Library (CML), Zagreb School of
Medicine, plays the key role in organizing all activities. The General
Hospital Holy Ghost Library directly participates in the development of
Biomedicina Croatica. The most important result of the System is the
implementation of 2 databases. 1. Biomedicina Croatica (BC) is a national
bibliographic database including papers published by Croatian authors in
foreign and domestic sources in all types of publications (since 1986). It
has 17,162bibliographic records (with annual growth of 3,000 records). The
structure of BC is similar to MEDLINE (Bethesda, USA), an international
standard for biomedicine. English is used in data indexing. BC is available
in CML and via CARNet. 2. Union List of Medical Periodicals in Croatian
Libraries is a factual database with essentials on 2,000 periodicals. It is
available via CARNet.

Research goals: 1. Rapid scientific information and document flow
from international sources, their efficient acquisition and usage; 2.
Bibliographic control of biomedical research and practice results published
in Croatia and its possible availability to world scientific community. Ad
1) Rapid information flow from international sources and its efficient
usage is carried out in 2 steps: the first is basic bibliographic
information (bibliographic databases) and the second is access to source
publications (books, journals). The dependence on scientific information
import, and accordingly considerable financial resuorces required, demands
organized cooperation of all medical and health institutions. Ad 2)
Collection and processing of biomedical scientific information published in
Croatia enables dissemination within the country and international
availability as well.
