Summary: A survey related to the sexuality of adolescents
attendingsecondary schools was carried out in six towns in Croatia in1990.
The survey was anonymous with the use of a questionnaire. It has been found
that 22.1% of girls and 48.9% of boys hadintercourse. The first intercourse
took place in most girls aged17-18 years and in boys one year of age
earlier. Changes on thelevel of significance of difference were found
between pupilswith best marks and the other as related to the
behaviour, knowledge and protection of unwanted pregnancy. The
highestpercentage of pupils of both sexes practised intercourse with
noprotection. The adolescents had the insufficient knowledge ofsexually
transmitted diseases and AIDS. All these data show thenecessity of the
introduction of sexual education and more familyplanning centres for
adolescents.

Summary: In the last three decades the total fertility rate in
Croatia
has been under the level that could provide a simple human reproduction. In
1960 a total fertility rate was 2.18, in 1980 - 1.92, in 1990 - 1.75 and in
1991 it was only 1.58. The situation today is even worse because of deaths
in the war and big social migrations. A pronatal policy of the government
is therefore badly needed. In 1990 research on the adolescents' sexuality
and contraception prevalence has been carried out by school doctors in six
Croatian towns.
A total of 5338 boys and girls (14-23 years of age) filled in a
questionnary with 38 questions, anonimously.
It has been found that 22.1% of the girls and 48,9% of the boys
are sexually active, the boys expressing their sexual activity
more often and earlier, especially in big towns (Zagreb, Split,
Rijeka). The risk of unwanted pregnany experienced 59.2% of the girls, 8.6%
adolescent girls used oral hormonal contraception,
a small number (0.5%) a diaphragm, but even 4.1% an intrauterine
device. About 10% of the girls used natural family planning methods, almost
always combining them with withdrawl; 53.7% of the girls consider the oral
contraception (the "pill") harmful, more often those with worse school
success.
