Summary: Reference values for FVC,FEV1 and FEF25-75% have been
developedon a sample of 2500 healty schoolchildren (nonsmokers) fromSplit,
ranging in age from 6 to 18 years. We measured
respiratoryparameters(FVC,FEV1 and FEF25-75%) in a standing
position, statistically analysed the results and presented them tabularywith
regard to age, standing and sitting height and body weight. The results
revealed a high correlation between FVC and FEV1 withrespect to age,
standing and sitting height and body weight. There was no significant
difference between respiratory paramentsand the two measured positions
(standing and sitting position). Astatistically significant difference was
noted in the ventilatoryparameters of the children (FVC, FEV1) between the
boys andgirls. Regression analyses was performed for all threerespiratory
parameters (FVC,FEV1 and FEF25-75%) vs age andheight, separately for boys
and girls. Nomograms for predictingrespiratory parameters for boys and
girls from Dalmatian regionwere also constructed in order to enable better
futureepidemiologic studies for early detection of ventilatoryimpairment in
schoolchildren.

Summary: The increased incidence of allergic diseases and the
importanceof their early detection, treatment and prevention in
schoolchildren, initiated us to organize the Allergo-pulmologicDivision of
the School's Polyclinic in Split.
According to our results the incidence of allergic diseases inthe
population of school children from the age of 6 to 15 is8.23%; of the
percentage 2.75% represents bronchial asthma, 2.94%perennial allergic
vasomotor rhinitis, 1.37% allergic rhinitis -pollenosis and 1.17%
urticaria.
The most frequently present allergens are house dust, grasspollens,
feathers, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, animal hairand weed pollen.
50-60% of atopic diseases have a positive familyanamnesis for allergic
diseases.
12% pupils with small airway obstruction had no sign of allergicdiseases.
The high incidence of allergic diseases in children emphasizesthe role of
the primary health care physician in the preventionand treatment of
allergic diseases during childhood, in order toreduce disease occurrence in
adults.

Summary: We studied the influence of exercise on development of
asthma in24 students (17 males and 7 females). We measured
standardspirometric parameters(FVC,FEV1,FMF25-75%) before and afterexercise
in order to investigate whether these parameters arechanged after exercise.
The exercise was carried on abicycle ergometer. 25 and 50 Watts increments
during 5 min.were used as levels of exercise in asthmatic patients and
controlsubjects respectively. The exercise protocol was stopped when
theheart rate reached 80% of the expected maximal heart rate.Ventilation
parameters were significantly decreased afterexercise in 3 students and
only one of them had minordiscomforting sensations. On the basis in the
investigationperformed, we consider that physical exercise is one of
theprovocation factors for bronchoconstriction in atopic asthma, which can
be registered by spirometry. Exercise induced asthmaoccurs very rarely. The
child with asthma should incorporatesporting activities in his life to
ensure normal growth anddevelopment. Restictions in physical activities
could havenegative impact on psycho-physical development and adaptation
todifferent social enviroments. Physical activities and sportshould be
adapted to the abilities of each individual child.

Title: "SPIROMETRIC REFERENCE VALUES IN SCHOOL CHILDREN FROM
DALMATIA"

Summary: Data on spirometric reference values in children are based
on small, selected populations. We performed spirometric testing (forced
vital capacity (FVC); forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1); forced
mid-expiratory flow rate (FEF 25-75%)) in 2,500 healthy nonsmoking school
children (1,250 boys and 1,250 girls) in the region of Dalmatia, Croatia.
Significantly higher FVC and FEV1 values were noted in boys. Standing and
sitting heights correlated significantly with FVC and FEV1 in boys and
girls. Regression equations were derived utilizing the multiple linear
regresion analysis, for FVC, FEV1 and FEF 25-75% related to five (sex, age,
weight, standing and sitting heights) or to three (sex, age and standing
height) variables. The reference spirometric values in the Dalmatian school
boys were in close agreement with Knudson et al.,while the values in girls
were closest to those of Knudson et al. and Cotes et al.
It is suggested that for calculation of ventilatory reference values in
boys and girls the age and the standing height should be used.
