Summary: A total of 466 subjects were examined for the first time at
theage of up to the third year of life and then 20 years later intheir
early adulthood, with a view to finding out the influenceof infant
nutrition ton the nutritional status, blood pressure, cholesterol and
lipoprotein levels in the serum of adultsubjects. The nutritional status
was defined by the relativeweight RT, the body mass index Q, and the
triceps and scapulaskinfolds KN. The influence of nutrition was evaluated
by:
a) a comparison of natural and arteficial nutrition in the firstthree
months of life,
b) by the effect of the total duration of the breast feeding,
c) by the regression analysis of various infant nutritionalstatus on the
anthropometric variables, cholesterol and bloodpressure.
It is concluded that infant nutrition substantially affects thenutritional
status and cholesterol values in adults and that therecommendation of a
longer breastfeeding may be considered as akind of prevention of
cardiovascular disorders.

Summary: The authors examined 493 adolescents at the age of 18-21
whosenutritional status had been assesed up to the third year of life.In
both tests the same methods of measuring weight, height, leftmid arm
circumference, skinfold triceps and subscapular wereapplied. The
nutritional status was estimated on the basis of therelative weight and
body mass index. The aim of the study was tofind out whether and what
degree nourishment in early childhoodinfluences the growth process. The
study has shown that growth isdependent on the nutritional status in early
childhood.Undernourishment is a factor which diminishes the
geneticpotential of growth. Obesity in early childhood is also a riskfactor
because, in comparison with other groups, a greater numberof subjects
remain obese in later life.

Summary: Agression against Croatia has brought suffering to children
bywhich a series of international conventions, especially theconvention on
the rights of the child, have been flagrantlyviolated. The series effect of
the aftermath of the war on thedevelopment of children in Croatia is the
more disturbing in thelight of the fact that even before the war the
natural populationgrowth in Croatia was far from satisfactory. Nevertheless
inspiteof all the horrors of war, the content and organization of thehealth
care for mothers and children in Croatia has been such asto prevent even
worse deterioration. It is significant that atthe height of the war in
Croatia, work has already started on thedefinition of the Croatian strategy
"Health for all by the year2000".

Summary: The aim of the research is to discover migrational
influence onthe emotional status of the child. We analysed the psychic
healthof children who had been living in Germany for at least 5 years, and
now have been living in Croatia for 3 years. We used Ruter's,Ascenbach's
and demographic questionnaires. Between emigrantgroup of children and
control group there is a slight differencein behaviour, which calls for
additionall work with children whoare in migration. Results of the study
show a difference of thefactors influencing behavioural disturbancies.

Summary: The past period since 1953 is characterized with decreasing
ofthe number of children in the Republic of Croatia with a trend
ofmortality decrease in this age group. For the further improvementof
health in this children population, it is necessary to directattention to
priority problems: decreasing of respiratorydiseases, injuries, improving
the pscyho-social development ofthe children, better health care in
preschool institutions, andearly prevention of diseases and creating the
adequate habits ofhealthy life.

Title: The ontogeny of pancreatic exocrine function determined by
measuring faecal chymotrypsin concentration
Pages: from 0 to 0
Number of references: 7
Language: engleski
Summary: Exocrine pancreatic proteolytic activity, determined by
serialmeasurements of faecal chymotrypsin concentration, wasinvestigated in
21 preterm infants (23-32 weeks gestation) duringthe first 28 days of life.
The overall chymotrypsin concentrationrange was similar to that already
described in term infants, showing that pancreatic chymotrypsin secretion is
equally welldeveloped at birth in the preterm infant. A
chymotrypsinconcentration peak, seen in term infants at day 4, did not
occurin this study until day 8, suggesting a slower initiation ofpancreatic
exocrine function in the preterm infant. Median faecalchymotypsin
concentrations, calculated for each baby using datafrom stools passed
between day 2 and day 12 of life, were muchlower in small for gestational
age infants when compared withappropriate for gestational age infants. The
lower chymotrypsinconcentration in small for data infants suggests a
deleteriouseffect of intra-uterine growth retardation on pancreatic
exocrinefunction, which may be a factor in limiting post-natal
catch-upgrowth.
Faecal chymotrypsin measurement was confirmed to be a rapid, simple, readily
repeated, cheap and non-invasive test.

Summary: The aim of the study was to examine the effects of the
birthweight, infant nutrition, body mass and social status from
earlychildhood and adulthood on plasma lipid levels in 192 adultsubjects
examined in the first three years of life (mean age 1.4
years in males and 1.3 years in females) and again asadults (mean age 19.9
years in males and 19.6 years in females).According to the results
obtained, total cholesterol wassignificantly higher in adult male subjects
breast fed for theshortest period of time ( p<0.05 ). Those males who were
leanestin the first three years of life and fattest as adults had
thehighest levels of total cholesterol ( p=0.03 ) and LDLcholesterol (
p=0.02 ).
Birth weight had no significant influence on plasma lipid levelsin adult
subjects. When data on nutrition, anthropometry andsocial status from both
age periods were included in multivariateregression analyses, the most
significant predictors of higherlevels of total cholesterol and LDL
cholesterol in males werelower adult height and poor social status in early
childhood, while in females were a shorter duration of breast feeding
andearlier introduction of solids.

Summary: The aim of this follow up study was to investigate the
effect ofbirth weight, infant nutrition, past and contemporary socialstatus
and anthropometry on systolic and diastolic blood pressurein adult
subjects. There were 465 boys and girls, originatingfrom three different
regions of Croatia, examined in the firstthree years of life, and again
approximately 18 years later. Theanalyses showed that birth weight was
inversely related tosystolic blood pressure in adult subjects. The highest
systolicpressure was found in subjects with the lowest birth weight andthe
greatest current body mass index. Relative weight in thefirst three years
of life was also inversely related to systolicblood pressure, but only in
adult males.Neither the type of milk, nor the duration of breast feeding and
the time of weaning hadany significant influence on blood pressure in adult
subjects. Inconclusion, influences of poor enviroment acting in
earlychildhood may be the important determinants of blood pressure
inadulthood.
