Summary: The study was initiated by the WHO Regional Office for
Europe in l985, to improve the epidemiological knowledge about factors
influencing child health in European countries. The outcome of the study
will be the basic information needed to identify strategies for the
improvement of children s health, in terms of survival, morbidity, growth
and development. The aim of the study is to determine whether certain
biological, enviromental, social, technological and psychological factors
are associated with the survival, health and ability of the fetus, infant
and child to asses whether the same factors appear to be influential to a
similar degree in different countries. The study is designed to cover
various aspects of the life and enviroment of the pregnant woman and child,
fetus enabling researches to address a large number of specific research
questions. It is a prospective, geographicaly based epidemiological study
designed to start as early in pregnancy as possible and to follow the
cohort of births until the age of 7 years. The cohort sample in each
country comprises all births in one or more geographical areas. The
information is being collected by means of self completed questionnaires or
from medical records at various points of time. During the preparation
phase (l985-l989) the questionnaires were developed and tested in
participating countries. Special attention was paid with regard to
standardization. The recommended number of births to be covered by each
centre is 5ooo. Czech Republic, Greece, Russia, Spain and 2 centres in UK
have been members of ELSPAC from the beginning of the study. Ukraine (4
centres) and Slovakia have recently joined the study. Croatia started with
the pilot study. Sweden and Estonia are making serious efforts to start the
study.
Keywords: pregnancy, factors influencing the growth and development of child, morbidity, mortality
Research goals: The aim is to determine whether certain biological,
enviromental, social, psycho-social and psychological factors are
associated with the survival, health and ability of the fetus, infant and
child to asses whether the same factors appear to be influential to a
similar degree in different countries. The study itself will not bring any
health care system measures, but it is designed to discover all
possibilities that could improve children health and to examine them
through it s own methods. Fields of interest: health, growth, development,
behaviour, biological processes, morbidity, mortality, accidents, disorders
of the sight, hearing and speach, adverse outcomes of the pregnancy,
pregnancy itself, parents, diets, breast feeding. All results will be
analysed in relation with the number of discovered factors in different
countries. That will include: enviroment, characteristics of parents,
social factors, physiological factors, psychosocial enviroment, behavioral
toward health care, statesments, fetal enviroment, enviromental changes.
