Summary: During 1984,1985 and 1986, 955 pigeons were examined for
thefollowing bacteria:C. jejuni, S. typhimurium and M.avium-intracellulare
(MAI komplex). C. jejuni was found in 7,4%feral pigeons in 1984, in 8,7% in
1985 and in 4,2% in 1986. S.typhimurium was found in 7,4% pigeons in 1984,
in 3,9% in 1985and in 4,2% pigeons in 1986. The MAI komplex was found in
0,4% in1985 and in 3 % pigeons in 1986. In the region of Zagreb
S.typhimurium was found in 11,1% carrier pigeons in 1986. In 43rock doves
caught in the region of Sinj neither C. jejuni nor S.typhimurium, nor MAI
komplex were recorded.

Summary: In the course of 1989 and 1990, examining the first farming
ofSlavonia , a region with diluvial and aluvial deposits of theOrljava
river, the authors determined the biocenocic andbiochemical effects of the
entrance of the Orljava river intothe fish ponds. Analyzing water and silt
samples, they have foundthat after a circular course of organic matter, the
water goingout of the fish pond, in relation to the river water the
enteringit, contains, no significant degree of pollution of potencialharm
to the irrigation of tributary agriculture areas.Therecorded values of
chemical and physical parameters could beunderstood as the usual cycles of
acido-basic balance.

Summary: In the course of the first haft of 1991, 32 samples of
water forwatering cattle and pigs from several farms in Croatia
werecollected and analysed. The established basic chemical
andbacteriological indicators have shown that the water for cattlewatering
was of worse quality than that for watering pigs.Besides the
bacteriological contamination of water from farms forbeef cattle fattening,
a high percentage of samples showingorganic contamination was recorded. It
is supposed that thisfinding was connected with the disposition of fecal
matter andlocation of source of water. These observations suggest thet
theveterinary profession should improve its care for the quality ofwater
which is closely connected with the health ofanimals,environment and
humans.

Summary: The results are presented of a three-year analysis of
thehygienic indicators in the water saples from cisterns in theregion of
Donje Kosinje. The analysis was carried out within theframework of a study
of the effect of accumulation " Kosinj" onthe health condition of cattle in
the vicinity of the futureaccumulation. The sampling was performed twice a
year, during themain autumn and spring minor rainfall maximum. The results
haveshown that the water examined is on the average distinctly soft.Its
increased content of organic matter cannot be ascribed to thefecal
contamination alone because its ammonia content is for themost part within
the allowable values. The determinedbacteriological indicators suggest a
satisfactory averagecondition of water samples, with 90,9% cases concerning
number ofmezophile and 67,2% concerning coliformmicroorganisms.

Summary: Feral pigeon were examined for the presence of antibodies
for C.psittaci in the course of a four year period (1988-1991). Out ofthe
examined 548 pigeon sera by the RVK micromethod, 258 or 47,1%proved to have
antibodies for C. psittaci. In the course of afive-year period /1985-1989),
by the hemagglutination inhibitiontest, 82o blood sera of the feral pigeons
were analysed. Thepresence of antibodies for the Newcastle disease virus
was foundin 429 or 52,3% pigeons. The results justify the conclusion
thatferal pigeons are the carriers and transmitters
ofchlamydiosis/ornithosis and as such a permanent threat both tohumans and
animals. They are also the carriers of the Newcastledisease which they can
easily transmit also to the poultry. Bytheir way of living, feeding and the
dirtying of house andmonuments,feral pigeon are the source of considerable
economiclosses.

Summary: The Bee eater recorded as a breeding species again in
Međimurje (Northern Croatia) in 1992. The authors are concerned about this
colony near Paklenica in Međimurje because the colony was disturbed
duringthe breeding period in 1992 when a man cut one nesting hole and
distroyed it. In total 19 breeding localities of Bee-eaters were recorded
in Croatia in the period 1948-1992. For the most of breeding colonies the
number of breeding pairs are unknown. For this reason the population number
of Bee-eaters in Croatia can't be estimated at the moment. The authors are
inviting the other ornithologists to supplement this paper with their data
about the breeding localities of Bee-eaters in Croatia and to contribute to
"Atlas of Breeding Birds of Croatia".

Summary: Pilot project for separate collecting biodegradable waste
started in Zagreb. The average percentage of biodegradable waste in
households is 37% it consist of kitchen and garden waste. Earthworm Eisenia
foetida has been used in this research in order to help decomposing
different kinds of biodegradable waste materials. It has been proven that
usuage of this earthworm halped biodegradation of cardboard products,
newspaper, grass and potato peel.

Summary: Bacteriological indicators of drinking water from various
groups of cisterns were invastigated trough 8 past years period. Schools,
restorans and public country cisterns are included. Microbiological
indicators according to legal criteria are not satisfied in 92,5% for
schools cisterns, 82% for restorans and 94,7% samples from public country
cisterns. It is recomanded to carry out regular desinfection monthly as to
controle filters.

Summary: Research on distribution of feral pigeons has been carried
out in order to establish the actual number of feral pigeon in Zagreb, so
that on this basis some steps could be taken to reduce and control the
level of ferla pigeon population. Researches were carried out during June
in 1991,1992 and 1995 from 7 to 10 a.m. The results have shown that the
feral pigeons can be found all over the city, but mainly and in the
greatest number in the city center which can be explained by the presence
of city markets which provide food for feral pigeons and were people
themselves use to feed them. Besides, buildings and city architecture in
this city area provides a lot of shelters for feral pigeons.

Summary: The effect of desinfectant with cmbinationa of actives,
Indusan, assigned for food production areas has been investigated in
poultry slaughter-hous, diary, confectionary and laboratory for chemical
and bacteriological examination of water and wastewater. The reduction up
to 80 per cent for mesophilic, coliform, enterobacteriae and streptococcus
has been obtained with 1% concentration of desinfectant and exposition time
30 minutes. So, Indusan could be recommened in all investigated plants, but
it mus be ephasize that all steeps as cleaning, washing and rinsing must be
done before desinfection.

Summary: Larval forms were successfully controlled using preparation
DU-DIM SC 48 with active ingredient difubenzuron at pif-breeding farm
highly infested by Musca domestica. Working solution consists of 10,5 ml
DU-DIM SC 48 diluted with 2 l of water which is sufficient for the
treatment od 10 m area. Spraying was repeated after 3 weeks. Successful
flies control in the environment such as pif-breeding farm, with many
faeculent ingredients and almost ideal temperature and humidity conditions
(20řC and relative humdity 80%) can be carried out by combined application
of adulticides and larvicides. DU-DIM is ecologically acceptable
biorational insecticide.

Summary: The sanitary measures associated with pet animals in urban
areas have to be carried out because of great number of animals and
pollution of the environment. Those measures are legitimate because of
protection of the human and animal health and life. According to the scheme
on Supplement 1 all the components of the most important factors in this
field are stated:veterinary legislation, veterinaryethical principles,
obligations anf rights of veterinarians and animal's owners and animal care
wich includes all sanitary and hygienic measure in the related field. The
main problems related to animal pollution in urban areas are mentioned as

Summary: "Živobran the Zagreb Society for Animal Protection was
founded in 1894. Its headquarters in Zagreb and on its seal there was the
inscription "Zagreb Society for Animal Protection". The members of the
society were its founders, full members, associated members and
supportingmembers. In 1895 the "Regulations of Zagreb Society for Animal
Protection" were ratified and in the same year they were issuded in a
booklet revised by dr. O. Cech. Soon after the issuing of the "regulations"
the "Instruction for the members of the society and the members of the
police forces" were edited. The "Regulations" distinctly show that the
Society was founded with the aim of protecting the animals, particulary
domestic ones from the maltreatment. The members of Society were also
obliged to support the development of birds breeding.

Summary: Based on empirical experiences the sanitary measurements of
protecting animals, their housing, their environment, as well as their
products were performed. Some of these empirical practices are the roots of
today's veterinary ethical principles. Early in Croatia history the
veterinary profession was very active. That practice was the result of
knowledge which related to all scientific fiels of veterinary scinece, as
it does to this day. This concern for animals, the environment and all the
nature has given insights to the desires of Croatian people who belive that
animals are living beings who should be able to live with theirown rights
and identity, even under the control of man.

Summary: Quartes for pigeons-dovecotes date back to ancient
times.Nowadays there are several types of dovecotes depending on theway of
dovecote building as well as the race of pigeons that arekept there. A good
dovecote is the one thet meets all thezoo-hygienic requirements that are
the prerequisite for breedinghealthy and high-quality pigeons. The best
dovecotes are thosemade of wood and bricks having an enclosure fenced by a
wirenet-the so called aviaries-that proved themselves to be the bestin our
climate.

Summary: In order, to normally perform functions of flying and
preservingbody temperature in birds, it is very important for
birds'feathers to be healthy. The colour of feathers is also a basisfor
birds' mimicry. Nowadays, in industrialized regions there aremore and more
dark nuances or even completely dark, wich iscalles industrial melanism.
The functioning of feathers is morecommonly undermined by parasites. The
most frequent ectoparasitesin birds are feather-eaters. Their presence and
needs damagefeathers wich loose their function.

Summary: In order to make a good diagnosis, it is necessary to
do,together with the taken anamnesis, a thoroigh clinicalexamination as a
basis for futher serological, haematological andbiochemical examinations.
While keeping and examining pigeons, aswell as taking blood samples and
administering medicines, it isnecessary to observe veterinary ethics about
animal treatment andto choose the most suitable way which will be at the
same timethe easiest and most practical for a veterinarian and

Summary: Like in other cities, the large number of pigeons in
Varaždininevitably causes economic,ecological and health problems. Theaim
of this research was to get introduce to diffusion and healthstatus of
feral pigeons in the Varaždin area. The number ofpigeons is the greatest in
the old of part of the city due toeasy nesting at the easily-reached loft.
Their number is alsovery great at the city market where can find food.
Distributionof pigeons was measured by test feeding at the beginning of
eachmonth at different places in the city and by counting . Pigeonshave
been also perodically caught in order to make serological,coprological and
patological-anatomical examinations.

Summary: The research of mouse buzzard started in 1988 in order
toestablish the numerousness of this species in the Međimurjeregion because
mouse buzzarrs is a bird of prey protected by low.It was researched the way
of nutrition, migration,influence ofmouse buzzard on numerousness of game
as well as the influence ofpeople on numerousness of mouse buzzard. The
research includedfinding nests, prior to nesting, observation of nesting,
countingand measuring of eggs, development of chicks, ringing of chicksand
labelling of feather mark. Radius of movement of labelledbirds was also
observed, establishing presence of certainspecimens in nutrition of mouse
buzzard, number of ruined nestsand individuals destroyed by peaple. On the
basis of the researchit can be supposed that certain nests were ruined due
to braekingof egg shell during lying which can be connected with a
greatquantity of herbicides used on surrounding agricultural areas.

Summary: The importance of the quastionair is in taking
appropriatemeasures aiming at preventing appearance and spreading of
certaindiseases. 48 bird breedders-14 canary breeders and 34
pigeonbreeders-have been pooled. The result shows that 35,42% of
thebreeders does not know anything about this desease. Theinformation
gathered by the poll indicate the need for educationand better knowledge of
this disease especially by the birdbreeders who are endangeret because they
are in permanent contactwith birds as potential source of this disease.

Summary: Trichomonas gallinae in birds causes trichomonoiasis-the
diseasetrom which young pigeons get sick or even die, while it does
notcause any major molestations in full-grown pigeons. From 1984until 1993,
2272 pigeons were examined for T. gallnae from 3ecologically different
environment: feral, domesticated and rockpigeons, of both sexes and of
different ages. During the researchT. gallinae was cultivated also on
Diamond's base which made itpossible to increase the number of positive
pigeons by 79,62%.Out of 2272 examined pigeons, 1578 (69,45%) were
positive. Thenumber of positive pigeons has grown from 36,78% up to 80,73
%in the course of years. T. gallinae was more frequent in wintermonths than
in other seasons of the year.

Summary: Birds are source of natural infection for Chlamydia
psittaci andhave a special place in epizootiology of feral pigeons.
During1992, 61,82% of feral pigeons were positive to Chl. psittaci inthe
City of Zagreb. At the end of 1992 and the beginning of 1993,32
domesticated pigeons were examined. By serologicalexamination in 17 out of
30 pigeons (56,67%) were foundantibodies for Chl. psittaci. Catting on 17
pigeons was performedand on the basis of the results of
patological-anatomical andpatohistological examinations was established
that 56,67% of thedomesticated pigeons were sick
fromchlamydiosis/ornithosis/psittacosis.

disposal ofrubbish is more and more becoming a great problem also in
ruralareas, where there are no apropriate rubbish-heaps. Therefore,peaple

Summary: By several-years researches of bird diseases, it has been
established that birds can be reservoirs and carriers of diseases to peaple
and animals.391 serum of pigeons by IHA method have been examined on human
influenya type A and in 335 serums of feral pigeons in 23,68% have been
found antibodies to human unfluenza type A, in 29 serums of bred pigeons
17,24% have been positiv and in 27 serums of rock pigeons have not been
found antibodies to human influenza type A. During 3 years have also been
researched infections with S. typhimurium, C. jejuni and MAI kompleks in
pigeons. These pathogenic microorganisms have not been found in 43 examined
serums of rock pigeons. T. gallinae has been found in 54,7% of feral
pigeons, 60,75% of bred pigeons and 11,76% of rock pigeons.

Summary: Durinf 1992 and 1993 microclimate had been regularly
determined every month and the number of nests, eggs and yung pigeons was
being counted at the garret in Zagreb in order to establish the influence
of microclimate on birth-rate and death-rate. During 1992 there were 648
nests and 863 eggs and during 1993 there were 579 nests and 757 eggs. It
was found that there was the greatest number of nests and eggs between
April and July, when the temperature was the highest,26-33řC and ralative
humidity was low 42-47%.During 1993 the number of dead feral pigeonswas
alsoobserved and was established that the highest number of dead feral
pigeons was when the temperature was very high and relative humidity law,
i. e. in spring and summer.

Summary: In order to maintain ecological balance and protect fauna,
it is necessary to take care of hygienic quality of water. Water samples
have been taken at 6 sites. All the samples been examined including "little
sanitary analysis": color, turbidity, pH, free ammonia, nitrite, chloride,
consumption of potassium-permanganate, total number of bacteria and 2
examinations from "large sanitary analysis":hardness of water and dissolved
oxygen. The results have shown the increased consumption of
potassum-permanganate, increased quantity of ammonia, nitrites and
decreased quantity of dissolved oxygen in the samples taken behind the
filter, which shows pour water quality and increased quantity of organic
materials. By bacteriological examination it has been established a very
high number of bacteria.

Summary: 132 feces of bred pigeons of both sexes and of different
ages (1 week to 8 years) have been coprologically examined as well as
sedimentation and flotation. By using the method of sedimentation, the
following parasites have been found in 54 (42,4%) feces: Eimeria spp. in 29
(51,8%), A. columbae in 22 (39,3%) and Capillaria spp. in 23 (41,1%)
pigeons. In pigeons aged between 1 week and 5 months, parasitic forms have
not been found, while the heaviest invaded pigeons were those aged between
6 months and 1 year (66,6%).

Summary: 780 feral piogeon have been caught and clinically examined
and their feces have been taken to diagnose Campylobacter jejuni. For
diagnosis of C. jejuni have been used Skirow's hard selectiv antibiotic

Throughthe year 1989, 1990 and 1991, a systematic monitoring of
watersuppling, animal health and environmental hygiene was performedon the

be to set a waterworks from themainland. The public waste disposal on the
island is bothecologically and hygienically unsatisfying. The purpose of
allthe mesures we undertook was to raise the quality of life of
theinhabitans and the environmental protection of the island.

Summary: Traped and clinicaly observed 780 feral pigeons. The
excrements samples taken to isolate C. jejuni which was attached to a
solid selective antibiotic media according to the Skorrow method. To grow
C. jejuni in the excrements sample a semiliquid selective media was used
according to the Chan method. Through such methods C. jejuni was confirmed
in 60 (7,7%) samples of feral pigeons.

Summary: The research into the nesting and surviving of the mouse
buzzard in one part of Međimurje has been carried out. Preail the nests
with three eggs. The research shows that the average size of an egg is
5,55x33. The average of the offspring which reach maturity for the nest is
1,43. In the research area mouse buzzard usually make their nests on the
tree of Canadian whit poplar, on 11 m. The established density of nesting
is four pairs on 6,76 km2.

Summary: The evidence of biting lice Columbicola sp. was inproved by
stupifying with ether. Autor applied the procedure in 17 carrier pigeons
and 110 feral pigeons and found during summer period 69,69% of Columbicola
sp. and 43,94% of Hochorstiella sp.. During autm author found only
Columbicola sp. in 56,81% of feral pigeons.

depend, in large part, on whether polluted waters are standing or flowing.
