Summary: In 20 bovine embryos and fetuses 6-65 mm long (crown-rump length)and 23 to 60-70 days old, the structure and localization of acidand neutral mucopolycaccharides and glycogen in their notochordwere investigated. Also, the localization in the notochord wasexamined of the activity of alkaline and acid phosphatases,ŕ-glycerophosphate-, glucose-6-phosphate-, isocitrate-,glutamate-, lactate- and succinic- dehydrogenases, andnicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide- andnicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide-phosphate- diaphorases. It wasfound that the bovine notochord begins decomposing at the end ofthe embryonal and the beginning of fetal development (45 - 50days old) and that in the fetus aged 55-65 days it no longerrepresents an unbroken cord of notochordal cells. Secretoryactivity of notochordal cells which produce the notochordalsheath starts very early (in 10 mm long embryos), andinterruptedly increases up to the end of the embryonaldevelopmental period when at the beginning of the fetal periodregression appears. These findings agree with the findings in thehuman embryo where, however, they relate to earlier developmentalperiods.

Summary: In the present experiment the effects on bone structure ofdicalcium phosphate (known producer) and tricalcium phosphate("Kormophos", Fosfaty, Voskresensk, Ukraine) as a feed additivesfor piglets was studied. During 54 days, that is during thegrowth of the average body weight 6 - 27 kg, the piglets wereadministered by above feed additives. Every groups were consistedof two male and two female experimental piglets. Control group(group I.) did not administrating any feed additive, and receiveda diet containing only 0.37% phosphorus of vegetable origin.Group II. received a diet containing 1% tricalcium phosphate. Theexperimental groups III., IV. and V. were fed the dietscontaining 0.5%, 1% and 2% of tricalcium phosphate. Results showed a parallel increase in mass and vigor ofinvestigated bones, particular of the femur, increase of contentsof calcium and phosphorus in bones and the increaseadministration of above feed additives. Biological value oftricalcium phosphate was a little higher in relation to dicalciumphosphate. The final weights (live weight and slaughter weight)of experimental piglets were increased parallel with increasedadministration of feed additives, too. The final weight of thepiglets of group V. was the biggest, and the piglets of group I.was the lightest. None of investigated bones show anypathological changes. One can conclude, the investigated tricalcium phosphate can beuse as a source of calcium and phosphorus in swine feed, fromeconomical point of view. It is recommended, before its widelyuse as a feed additive, to study its eventually side effect onreproduction and teratogenic, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects.

Summary: On the basis of morphological characteristics applied for the determination of normal stages in the chick embryo development and by comparing turkey and chick embryo incubated from fertilized eggs of both species, we established preliminary criteria for the determination of turkey embryo development stages. First two or three days of embryonal development should be studied on the basis of number of visible somites. Besides the number of visible somites first indication of cranial flexure (x+1) and cervical flexure (x+2) should be chosen for the following criteria. Next stage should be determined by the appearance of limb buds and hardly visible eye-pigmentation (x+3). Initialdevelopment of peak and increasing differentiation of digital plate with indication of webs (x+4) cold serve as criteria for the following stage. In the next stage (x+5) egg-tooth becomes conspicious which corresponds to appearance of one row on either side of the spine. In the following stage (x+6) the changes in the wings and legs development are considerable. Digits and toes are separated and on thighs individual feather-germ appear. In the next stage phalanges become visible (x+7). The following stage (x+8) is characterised by the beginning of claws and frontal process, the only specific morphological characteristic of the turkey embryo. In the next stage (x+9) pads on plantar surface of foot are conspicuous and flight feather-germs appear. Transverse ridges along the superior surface of the metatarsus and phalanges become visible (x+10) and scales on dorsal surface of legs (x+11) give the final shape to the legs. In the same stage nestling down appears. Just as in case of chick embryo following stages will be characterised only by embryo growth.

Summary: Accessory lobes and glycogen body are the most impressive characteristic of the birds' spinal cord structure. Accessory lobes are bilateral protrusion mostly arranged inthe lumbosacral region of the spinal cord. Accessory lobes consists of vacuolated cells, oval in shape with peripheral nuclei while the nerve cells are embedded among them. the nerve cells embedded in accessory lobe tissue resemble multipolar cells, just smaller. The structure itself is located within white matter. Accessory lobe cells have ability of glycogen storing. In turkey this feature has been observed already in the embryonal development. Single glycogen granules appear on the sixteenth day of the embryonal development while on the eighteenth day glycogen is clearly visible. On the same day glycogen granules appear inside accessory lobes' multipolar nerve cells. Although there are references on almost identical tissue structure of accessory lobe and glycogen body, during the embryonal development of turkey we can suggest only similarity.

Summary: The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of preparation Sumamed (R) (azitromycin) on the embryonic development of chicken bursa of fabricius. It is known that the bursa of Fabricius is special lymphatic organ of the birds, that produces specific lymphoid immune cells, as same as thymus does. Due to that, we presumed as ineresting to study the influence of particular dose of azitromycin on the development of chicken embryo in the time of the most intense embryogenesis. We used the middle embryonic lethal dose (E5-LD50 = 200 mg) of azitromycin and inoculated it in yolk sacks of the eggs in weighting 1 kg at the 5th developmental day. By means of histological investigation, we noted that particular folds of the bursa of fabricius assumed the specific shape of oak leaf. In epithelial cells, the foamy part of cytoplasm was observed, as well as vacuoles and increased number of goblet cells. In the follicles and intertitial tissue there were many eozinophyles. The number of lymphocytes was decreased. In degenerated follicles there were few lymphocytes with picnotic nuclei. The entire result was to show the slight atrophy of the bursa of Fabricius.

Summary: Connected with the development of ecotoxicology, the edible snail (Helix pomatia L.) became very good test-erganism for study of pollution of the land ecosystems. For that reason, we studied histomorphology and histochemistry of digestive gland and excretory organ of the edible snail. The digestive gland is composed of numerous tubules, crowded together, and very small quantity of connective tissue and hemolymphatic spaces. the epithelial cells of tubules vary a great deal in their appearance, they contain acidophilic plasm with nemerous granules. Some of them contain large vacuoles, with phagocytic material from digestive tube. Namely, in their basal part, there is located strong activity of DPN diaphorase, and medium activity of acid phosphatase. There is weak activity of alkaline phosphatase and nonspecific esterases. Activity of dehydrogenases (Gl-6-P-Dh; L-Dh; S-Dh; alpha-GP-Dh) is very weak. The excretory organ is composed by wide excretory tubules. This tubules are lined with a simple columnar epithelium. The epithelium separates large lumina of excretory tubules and thin hemolymphatic spaces. All of the epithelial cells containlarge vacuoles in their apical parts. In the plasm of the epithelial cells we registered very strong activity of Gl-6-P-Dh, and DPN diaphorase, but very weak activity of L-Dh, S-Dh, alpha-GP-Dh,alkaline phosphatase, and nonspecific esterases. Activity of acid phosphatase is absent.

Summary: Recent knowledge of the bird glycogen body is mainly based upon the investigation of the domestic chicken and turkey. There have been no systematical research of the glycogen body of the wild birds. Therefore, in this paper a comparative research of this organ from large number of the bird species has been performed. forthis purpose 41 bird species belonging to 11 orders (22 families) have been investigated. For microscopical observations were used these methods: hematoxiline-eosine histological staining and PAS-reaction accompanied by diastase control staining for visualization of glycogen location. It has been observed that all of the investigated species posses the glycogen body, but its shape and position differs from one to another order. Glycogen body is gelatinous structure situated inthe dorsomedial part of the spinal cord at the level of the lumbosacral plexus. it is composed of the large cells, polygonal, round or oval in shape, with excentric dark nucleus surrounded by a rim of dense cytoplasm. The remainder of the cell volume is occupied by glycogen particles. Central channel of the spinal cord passes through the glycogen bodies in all the described species.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution of the environment is becoming an increasing problem. As well, the sea pollution is getting more attention every day. The most common research are those that include determination of quantity and bioaccumulation of the heavy metals in the ecosystems. there are much lesser works that study direct influence of the heavy metals onthe living organisms. We experimentally studied the effects of various heavy metal concentrations on the shrimps (Palaemon squilla, L.) from the unpolluted parts of the Adriatic Sea. The experimental animals were exposed to mercuric chloride, lead acetate and cadmium chloride in various concentrations in the sea water and for various time periods. Under experimental conditions, after exposure of 10 hours and 0.1% concentration of heavy metals, 90% of animals died of mercuric chloride, 80% of cadmium chloride and 12% of lead acetate. After 10 hours exposure and 0.05% concentrations of heavy metals 50% of anials died of cadmium chloride and there where no deaths caused by lead acetate. The cadmium chloride concentration of 0.0025% after 10 hours of exposure, caused the death of 50% of animals, but thosewere markedly small animals. from obtained results we can infer that above mentioned heavy metals, particularly mercury, are very toxic for shrimps (they are more toxic for young animals than for old) and that these animals are suitable test organisms for this kind of research.

Summary: This research showed that development stages of turkey and chicken embryos were significant different in their developmental time course. nevertheles, they could be compared if the different lenght of their embryonic development was taken into consideration. Further, it was obvious that the development of turkey glycogen body was very similar to that of chicken's. it was noted that the first sign of turkey's glycogen body formation was accumulation of glycogen granules. Functional significance of this early glycogen accumulation incells of future glycogen body was not clarified in this research. therefore, other future investigations of glycogen body, not only morphological but also physiological andbiochemical, need to be done due to clarifying the significance of this interesting structure.
