Summary: The sow, that have been diseased and received the therapy
beforeparturition, farrowed 11 pigs third day after birth four pigsshowed
symptoms of eperythrozoonosis (anorexia, anemia andicterus) and few days
later the symptoms were present in the restof pigs. In the boold smears of
the pigs stained after Giemsa thepathogen E. suis was visible on
erythrocytes. The treatment witha single dose of oxytetracycline (Geomycin
retard-Pliva, Zagreb,Croatia) was not efficient and pigs died soon. Gross
pathologychanges were characteristic for eperythrozoonosis.

Summary: Five nonsplenectomized and six splenectomized pigs were
s/cinfected with 3 to 5 ml of blood from swine stored in a freezerfor 0 to
291 days, in which over 90% of erythrocytes had thepathogen on its surface
(E. suis, strain Munchen 1990). Symptomsof the disease showed i the first
group of pigs between day 4 andday 10 after splenectomy, and in
splenectomized pigs between day8 and day13 after experimental infection.
The duration ofvirulence of E. suis in the blood kept at -20 C for 291 days
wasclearly established.
