Summary: The fundamental aim of the scientific investigations of
this project is to create high-yielding and top quality winter wheat
varieties with the genetic yield potential of 15 t/ha. With regard to the
high yields and the top quality of our varieties available so far and to
the successful wheat breeding at the Osijek Agricultural Institute for the
last ten years (34 winter wheat varieties recognized in Croatia from 1980
to 1993 and 4 varieties recognized abroad), while keeping in mind this aim,
it is necessary to work out a new modell of wheat varieties and, following
the yield components, to lay an emphasis on the high yield of kernels.
Before this aim is achieved, genetic traits that affect considerably yield
formation and quality must be thoroughly studied.
Research goals: The main objective of the applied scientific
investigations is tocreate new high-yielding winter wheat varieties of
genetic yieldpotential of 15 t/ha. The activities related to the project
havebeen carried out continuously and for a long time, and startedlong
before 1991. We have been active in fulfilling thisobjective gradually,
making genetic changes of certain plantorgans and by continuous
incorporating the genes for resistenceto principal diseases. According to
the results of testing thenew wheat cultivars created within this project,
we can concludethat the genotypes attaining considerable higher yields
(by 10 to20 %) are available as compared to the standard varieties
spreadmost, and with the genetic potential of about 10 t/ha. As aresult of
the project-related work, four winter wheat varietieswere recognized in
1991: Podravina, Fortuna, Stella and Demetra(breeders: M. Bede,G. Drezner,
J. Martinčić). Some of them havealready been grown on considerable areas.
The activities inrelation to the project resulted in the recognition of 10
newvarieties in 1993, such as: Danica, Neretva, Snaša, Maja,
Feniks,Victoria, Šokica, Afrodita, Ruža and Ravnica (breeders:M. Bede,G.
Drezner, J. Martinčić).In 1994 four varieties of winter wheat were
recognized:Inga,Joza,Manda and Elza (breeders:Bede,M.,
Drezner,G.,Martinčić,J..
