Summary: A part of the project was performed through ten comparative
tests. The tests were set up as a than 2000 kg/ha. L 8337, L 8300 and GV3
fert., breeder seed were tested. The hybrids GV3 x L 8337and GV3 x L 8300
were also tested. Both yield less and lower quality than the standards did.
Six of the eleven lines of (R5 x GV3) RFC progeny were susceptible to PVY.
The others were tolerant, but they yield low and bad quality. The lines
selected in (McNair 944 x KA 596)VD and McNair 944 x NC 744 progeny were
better than the standards. In the NC 567 x GV3, NN 11 progeny the line 3N
474 was also better than the standards. Besides the pedigree bred
cultivars, 6 anther-derived dihaploids from the same F2 population were
also tested. All of them were extremely bad. Selection according appearance
was performed on and between F3 populations. They were planted randomly, in
two repetitions. A total of 137 plants in 25 of 39 F3 progeny of (R5 x GV3)
RFC hybrid as well as 72 plants in 6 of 49 F3 progeny of McNair 944 x NC
744 hybrid were chosen.

Summary: According to the American varieties tests, NC 13 flue-cured
variety is better than the standard, NC 2326. Also it has lower
tar/nicotine ratio. It is susceptible to peronospora, and consequently, in
Croatia it is usable only like an F1 hybrid with the peronospora tolerant
line GV3. However the susceptibility of GV3 x NC13 to the potato virus,
eliminate this hybrid from the varieties test. The lines selected in the
the GV3 x NC13 progeny are tolerant to PVY as "Drava" is, have a similar
yield, better quality, and less nicotine. The characters of the selected
lines: quality, tolerance to PVY, low nicotine, sugests that the properties
of the GV3 line (tolerance to PVY, bad quality and high nicotine content)
are not linked.

Summary: The influence of fertilization with different amounts of
chloride and sulphate in potassium fertilizer mixtures on the yield and
quality of Virginia flue-cured tobacco was investigated at the experimental
field of the Zagreb Tobacco Institute, Croatia, during the years 1986-1988.
Fertilization with constant amounts of potassium was carried out with K2SO4
and KCl in the ratios of 1:0, 3:1, 1:1, 1:3 and 0:1, so the added
quantities of chloride varied from 0 to 166 kg/ha, and sulphate from 0 to
74 kg/ha, in all three years. In 1987 and 1988, the experiment also
included fertilization with porassium added only as KCl in the autumn. The
content of Cl in the soil was analyzed every 15 days the vegetation from
15th June to Ist August 1987 and 1988. The experiment was set up according
to the block method with four repetitions. The tobacco increased
significantly wit an increased application of KCl only in 1988 (by 7% in
the case of fertilization with 75% KCl and 25% K2SO4 compared to the
application of K2SO4 only). No significant difference were found in the
quality of cured tobacco fertilized with different amounts of K2SO4 and
KCl, and no difference in the nicotine and reducing sugars content were
noticed. The chloride content in the cured tobacco leaves increased
significantly as the amounts of KCl added to the soil increased. The soil
analyses for chloride content during tobacco vegetation revealed the same
regularity. Considering the chloride content in the cured leaves, the
research results indicate that under the conditions prevailing in the
north-west part of Croatia, Virginia flue-cured tobacco may be fertilized
with not more than 40 kg chloride per hectare.

Summary: The effect of fertilization with different quantities of
copper, zinc and boron on the yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco was
investigated during 1989-1990. The experiment was set up according to the
block metod with four repetitions on sandy loam soils in the experimental
field of the Tobacco Institute Zagreb in Pitomača. In all treatments,
except for that wich used no fertilizer at all, fertilization of tobacco
was undertaken with 20 kg/ha of nitrogen applied in a NPK/5:20:30
fertilizer mix. According to the experimental design, other treatments also
included additional fertilization with Cu, Zn and B in the rates ranged
from 2-8 kg/ha and 0.5-5 kg/ha, respectively. These nutrients were applied
in two bands spaced 10 cm either side of the row of tobacco at a depth of
10 cm. The Cu, Zn and B contents in the soil prior to the procedures were
2.1 mg/kg, 1.0 mg/kg and 0.37 mg/kg, respectively. Neither or nicotine were
affected by application of Cu, Zn or B. The results showed that in a wet
season some positive results can be expected from Zn and B application with
respect to an increased reducing sugars content. In a dry season, increased
application of B can result in an improved cured leaf visual quality. The
contents of Zn and B in leaf tissue were significantly increased with an
increase in the application of Zn and B to the soil. In general,
supplemental application of the nutrients Cu, Zn and B seem not be needed
for the production of flue-cured tobacco on the sandy loam soils of
north-west Croatia.

Summary: In the area where flue-cured tobacco is grown in Podravina,
in northern Croatia, tobacco is grown on several types of soil. The soils
often have and acid reaction and a low magnesium content. This research was
carried out on a typical soil in the period from 1990 to 1992. The aim of
the research was to determine the effect of liming on the yield and quality
of tobacco. Apart from the control treatment, the tobacco was planted on
soil to which 2 and 4 tons of lime, 2 and 4 tons of dolomitic lime and 3
and 6 tons of dolomite were applied. The experiment was randomized in four
repetitions according to the block method. The soil acidity was reduced and
the mobile Al content cancelled depending on the kind and dosage of the
materials applied. Higher dosages and smaller particles were more
effective. The highest yield was achieved in tobacco grown on soil to which
6 tons of dolomite and dolomitic lime had been applied A more favourable Ca
and Mg content was found in tobacco grown on soil to which dolomite had
been applied.

Summary: Investigations were carried out on semigley in the central
River Drava valley (Northern Croatia) with the aim of establishing the
fertilizing value of biopost, as a representative of organic fertilizers,
and of as a representative of organic-mineral fertilizers, in comparison
with mineral fertilizers and stable manure, the latter two being compared
with each other as well, regarding the yield quality of flue-cured tobacco
leaf. Efficiency of the fertilizer types and rates applied was strongly
affected by frequent very adverse meteorological conditions, which often
showed characteristics of severe drought. Nevertheless, also under such
conditions and despite the minimum rates applied, biopost and organo had a
positive effect on the yield and quality of the flue.cured tobacco leaf. In
all cases, they had an obvious advantage over mineral fertilization, which
offers distinct possibilities of their application in the growing of
flue-cured tobacco. However, owing to its better fertilizing efficiency,
combined organic and mineral fertilization might be justified, certainly
also with respect to the economic aspect of the problem. The positive
influence of biopost and organo on the higher participation of quality
classes of flue-cured tobacco leaf in comparison with mineral fertilization
is indisputable despite the occasionally prevailing effects of fluctuating
weather conditions during the investigation period. In other words,
harmonic organic, even organic - mineral, fertilization should be preferred
to mineral fertilization alone.

Summary: The paper deals with the results achieved in investigating
the effects of biopost and organo, in comparison with stable manure and
mineral fertilization as well one with the other, on the chemical
composition of flue.cured tobacco leaf and on the changes in the chemical
soil complex. Investigations were carried out on semigley in the central
Drava Valley in Northern Croatia. While biopost is an organic fertilizer,
organo is defined as an organic-mineral fertilizer since, in addition to an
organic component, it also contains a mineral component. Both fertilizers
affected the chemical composition of tobacco leaf, though they were applied
in relatively small quantities. This was primarly reflected in a reduction
of nicotine content and an increase in the content of reducing sugars in
comparison with mineral fertilizing, though not always proportional to the
rate applied. Here, biopost showed a certain advantage over organo. The
calcium in tobacco leaf does not indicate any marked influence of the
fertilizing treatments tested in the trial. Existence of such a relation
seems more likely in the case of magnesium, while in the case of potassium
fertilizing with this bioelement had the crucial role with regard to its
content in tobacco leaf. As regards the changes in the chemical soil
complex, the effect of the tested fertilizers, depending on the parameters
studied, was either non-existent or very slight.

Summary: Investigations of intensive fertilization with mineral and
organic fertilizers on the yield and quality of burley tobacco and on the
content of phosphorus and potassium in the soil were conducted during
1984-1990 years. The exact field experiments were made according to the
block method in Božjakovina on experimental field of Tobacco Institute
Zagreb. The basic fertilization for tobacco were 1000 kg/ha NPK/7:14:22 and
in some treatments topdressing with 250 kg/ha CAN. In some treatments
tobacco was additionaly fertilized with 300 or 600 kg/ha P2O5 and/or 90 or
390 kg/ha K2O, added as triplex and potassium sulphate. Fertilization for
tobacco with organic fertilizers were made with 30 t/ha of livestock or
broiler manure, alone or in combination with the basic fertilization (1000
kg/ha NPK/7:14:22). The results of these investigations showed that
intensive fertilization with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can
improve initial fertility of soil due to the higher content of these
nutrients in the soil, determinate by the t

Summary: The climatic conditions during the growing of tobacco
seedlings are the factors affecting not only the successful outcome of this
operation, but also the tobacco yield. The exposure of seedlings, when they
have grown five or more leaves, to short daylight and low temperatures
(usualy below 18oC) will lead, to a greater or lesser extent, to early
flowering of the plants after they have been transplantedto the field.
Under the growing conditions prevailing in north-western Croatia, such
situations are objectively possible three to four weeks before
transplanting and after transplanting the tobacco to the field. This paper
deals with research carried out by some authors on the problem descibed (no
such research has been conducted in Croatia). The research is supported by
tables showing the climatic conditions prevailing in Pitomača in 1991,
since there was more early flowering than usual in that year.

McNair 944 x NC 744, GV3 x Delgold, (McNair 944 x KA 596)V.D. and (R5 x
GV3)R.F.C. progeny were proved in comparative tests. Two out of nine
individual progenies of L 8300 were discarded, one because there was more
than one cherry red harvest. Because of the more than one cherry red
harvest, two out of nine individual progenies of L 8337, as well as
thirteen individual progenies of the GV3 fert. population, were discarded
too. In the progeny of McNair 944 x NC 744, GV3 x delgold and (McNair 944 x
KA 596)V.D., three were cultivars with favourable agronomic properties. The
line from the (R5 x GV3) R.F.C. progeny of acceptable resistance to PVY,
reached maturity before the standard. Earlier harvesting is necessary to
evaluate its yield and quality. There were 56 lines in the F3 generation
progeny of NC 567 x GV3 NN 11, in which 698 plants without signs of PVY or
TMV infection were chosen. Some lines from R5 x DV3, DV3 x Ema and DV3 x
Emona hybrids were also free of PVY symptoms. The agronomic value of those
cultivars has yet to be proved in comparative tests.

Summary: During the vegetation year of 1992/93,the sequence of
weather conditions did not place within the framework of the "normal"
climatic average. Instead, there were considerable aberrations of
individual meteorological elements. This was the case especially with the
hydrometeorological characteristics, and, through these, some other
significant meteorological elements and phenomena. After a perhumid autumn
period, the weather conditions during the winter were diametrically the
opposite. precipitation was reduced to a minimum. It may be said that, in
the meteorological sense, the air drought reached the proportions of a
meteorological aversion. During vegetation, there were significant
deviations from the average, i.e. there was a water deficit, especially in
May, July and part of August.

Summary: The consequence of the wartime and financial crisis in the
Croatian economy began to cumulate during 1993. After gradual and thorough
preparations, a stabilization programme, which is also the programme of the
new peacetime economic system, was adopted in October 1993. It is important
to view the status of agriculture in the new economic policy from this
aspect. The paper presents the basic characteristics of the economic
situation before the programme was adopted and the basic sharacteristics of
the stabilization programme. This is followed by an analysis of the impact
of the new economic policy measures on agriculture. The analysis shows the
unfavorable influence of the monetary and credit policy, the exchange rate
policy, the fiscal policy and the incomes policy on agriculture as an
economic sector.

Summary: Anther cuture of tobacco was established on a half strenght
MS medium that contained organic supplements and 1% active charcoal. 1718
haploids (NC 567 x GV3 NN 11), 894 (Virginia D x GV3 NN 11) and 1497 burley
haploids (derived from 17 different crosses) were raised. Resistance of
haploids to PVY was investigated. Resistant haploids were diploidized by
the culture of leaf segments with the middle vein, on the MS medium
supplemented with kinetin (2 mg/l) and NAA (0.1 mg/l). Survival of haploids
and regeneration of buds on the medium for diploidization was better for
Virginia than for Burley. In the population of regenerants 10% of plants
were dihaploids. The seed of 6 dihaploid lines was collected and for 4
lines diploidity was prooved with the citological methods.

Summary: The results obtained indicate that crop rotation was a
significant biological-cytological category affecting the tobacco leaf
properties and that it was to be preferred over the monoproduction of
tobacco. It was also interesting to note that crop rotation with a greather
number of fields was to be preferred over crop rotation with a lesser
number of fields. As regards tobacco quality, too, crop rotation was
evidently to be preffered over monoproduction, and crop rotation with a
greater number of fields was to be preferred over crop rotation with a
lesser number of fields. The chemical composition of the tobacco was less
dependent on the number of crop rotation fields. The degree of cirus
infection of tobacco was the most dependent on wheater the tobacco was
grown in plot rotation on a monoculture. Again, crop rotation was to be
preferred over monoproduction and crop rotation with a greater number of
fields was to be preferred over crop rotation with a lesser number of
fields. Investigation with nematodes was less marked this year than in
previous years, moreover, it was completely absent in some crop rotations.
The current state of soil chemical properties cannot be defined
unambiguously through the types of crop rotation investigated. A more
precise definitive analysis of all the results obtained so far is therefore
required.
