Summary: Because of its high capability to absorb sauces, Burley
tobacco is, along with Virginia, an unavoidable component of blended
cigaretes. Attempts are, therefore, made to develop cultivars that would,
under the growing conditions prevailing in Croatia, satisfy the
requirements of both tobacco producers and tobacco producerts. part of this
task was also the object of these investigations, designed as two.year
cultivar trial and carried out on the experimental ield of the Tobacco
Institute Zagreb at Božjakovina in 1992 and 1993. The aim of the trial was
to test some morfological and economic characteristics of nine genotypes of
burley tobacco, as well as to determine the coefficients for calculation of
their leaf area. Investigarions were conducted alternately on two soil
types: pseudogley-gley and pseudogley eutric. The trial was set up
according to the randomized block method with nine Burley tobacco genotypes
involved: three cultivars and their F1 hibrids, as well as hybrids crossed
with cultivar BA1. The following cultivars were represented: TN 86, HY 71
and Poseydon and F1 hibrids Hy 71*TN 86 Hy 71* BA1 Hy 71*Poseydon,
Poseydon*TN 86, Poseydon*BA1 and TN 86*BA1. The genotypes tested deffer
considerably in their economic and morfological properties. Irrespective of
the property tested, less favourable values were generally obtained in the
climatically more adverse 1992. In both investigation years, the highest
tobacco leaf yield and the best quality as well as the best morfological
properties, viz. the lengh, width and leaf area were rendered by hybrids
Poseydon*BA1, Poseydon*TN 86 and Hy 71*BA1. Tobacco leaf quality was not
satisfactory in either investigation year because of low proportion of
classes I-III. Coeficients for measuring the leaf area vary depending on
the genotype, but also on the leaf position on the stalk.

Summary: New F1 hybrids together with the foreign varieties TN 86
and C 104 and the standard domestic variety Čulinec were tested during
three years trials at two locations. All these cultivars were studied for
morphological characteristics, days to flowering, disease resistance, the
yield and quality of cured tobacco as well as chemical and smoking
properties. All the genotypes showed a higher resistance to PVY than the
standard veriety Čulinec. The F1 hybrids BHT1 and BHT2, rsulting from the
cross of the domestic breeding lines, reached the highest yield and value
per hectar among all the genotypes. The variety TN 86 had the most
acceptable chemical and smoking properties of the leaf and the hybrid BHT1
also had these properties at a satisfactory level. The results of these
investigations indicate that some F1 hibrids, particularly BHT1, may
successfully replace the standard variety Čulinec in field production.

Summary: Anther culture of 17 different hybrids of burley tobacco
was established. Androgenesis induction depended on the donor plant's
genotype, polen stage and cold treatment. The anther response was 17-88% in
relation to the donor plant's genotype. The best androgenesis induction was
achieved with buds 13-21 mm long and cold treatment at 4oC (24 hours). The
first haploids emerged 4 wks after culturing on 1/2 x MS medium. When they
were 15 cm high they were transplanted from 1 x MS medium to in vivo
conditions. Haploids with normal phenotype, that survived acclimatization
were mechanically inoculated with potato virus Y (PVY). The first symptoms
appeared 12 days after inculation and after 3 wks 30% of the plants
expressed symptoms of infection with PVY. Results obtained with the the DAS
ELISA technique corresponded to visual symptom inspection. using the method
of regeneration of dihaploids from midvein segments of resistand haploids,
one dihaploid line was established until now. In an attempt to improve
diploidization, media with different supplements were used.

Summary: In the "N.C. Offical Variety Test", the NC13 variety was
better the standard NC2326. That it is susceptible to peronospora was shown
in the variety test at the Tobacco Institute Zagreb experimental field in
Pitomača in 1983. To obtain tolerance to peronospora, the Tobacco Institute
Zagreb is to use F1 hybrids with peronospora tolerant genotypes. It is
Usually the GV3 line. This time an Australian variety, Ovens6 62 was for
the same purpose. It is tolerant to peronospora, but because of its poor
yield it is unacceptable as such. The hybrids GV3 x NC13 and Ov62 x NC13
were as tolerant to peronospora as the standards "Drava" and "Podravina",
of better quality, and GV3 x NC13 yielded more. In normal seasons the
chemical composition of OV62 x NC13 was similar to the chemical composition
of the standards. In a season with less precipitation it had a better
sugar/nicotine ratio. The susceptibility of Ov62 x NC13 to the potato virus
eliminates this hybrid from the variety test.

Summary: Three-year field trials were carried out on luvisol on the
experimental field of the Tobacco Institute Zagreb in Pitomača. The trial
was three-factorial, set up according to the split split plot method in
four replications. Three basic ploughing depths were investigated, three
soil prparation methods as well as three nitrogen fertilizer rates. The
Drava variety was planted Regarding the physical soil properties, the
mechanical soil resistance was determined. Highest compaction was recorded
on the soil to which shalow plowing was applied. Root yield was determined
after the last tobacco picking. Significantly higher leaf and root yields
and somewhat better quality were obtained with deeper ploughing. Different
soil preparation methods had a significant effect on tobacco yields as
well. Tobacco planted in ridges formed in spring gave the highest yield.
Nitrogen fertilization also increased the yield of tobacco leaf and root.
Nitrogen applied in fertilization significantly increased the content of
nicotine and reduced the content of reducing sugars. The achieved results
indicate that higher yields and better quality of tobacco can be reached by
the application of adequate agrotechnical measures on luvisol naturally
susceptible to compaction.

Summary: The fundamental prerequisite for successful tobacco
productionare healthy seedlings. Producing strong, mature and
healthyseedlings means planting pest-free tobacco. While the presence
ofinsects can be observed when lifting or planting seedlings, intercellular
and intracellular parasites, especially viraldiseases, pass unnoticed. To
help ensure that seedlings arehealthy, and this is the basis of successful
production, certainmeasures must be taken involving the soil structure, the
mostfawourable moisture, warmth and light level, and cleanliness inand
around the nursery, both of people and equipment, with aslittle use as
possible of chemical agents.

Summary: Chemical analyses of flue-cured tobacco producted under
thecondition prevailing in Croatia during 1992. show that thetobacco had
the following content of significant components: thenicotine content in the
lower leaves was low to medium(0.93-2.53%) in those from small tobacco
farm. In tobacco fromintensive farming plantation was medium to higher
(1.77-3.19%).In the upper leaves the nicotine content was medium (to
2.18%)higher (3.0%) and very high (4.76%) in those from intensivefarming.
The very high nicotine content is probably result ofintensive fertilization
along with the lack of precipitationduring the period of vegetation and of
the agro-tehnical measureof topping.

Summary: Tobacco was irrigated at an initial content of 40%, 60% and
80%of plant-available water, and nitrogen "leaching" from the rootzone was
performed in three additional treatments. In 1990,tobacco irrigation
resulted in a higher yield (3-27%), unit value(44-69%) and reducing sugars
content (50-94%) and in a lowernicotine content (41-52%). In 1992,
irrigation again led to ahigher yield (13-40%), tobacco quality (8-28%) and
reducingsugars content (19-40%), and a lower nicotine content (-3-24%).

Summary: Two decisions have been made in Croatia that are important
for the long-term development of agriculture. Croatia has applied for
admission to GATT (that is to the WTO). Secondly, a strategy of
agricultural development has been proposed and adopted in Croatia that is
"based on the measures of membership in GATT and long-term measures for
membership in the EU". Although the conditions for Croatia's entry into
GATT and the World Trade Organization are not known, it is expected that
Croatia will achieve conditions similar to those fulfilled by present-day
member countries with similar characteristics. On the basis of the "Urugvay
agreement" GATT obliges its members (a) to transform all protective
measures in the case of imports into customs duties (tarifs), (b) to reduce
the level of protection in the case of mports by an average of 36% compared
to the basic period (1968-1988), (c) to reduce financial support for
agriculture by an average of 20% and (d) to reduce export incentives (by
36%). The strategy for the development of agriculture that has been adopted
has as its staring point a reform of the farming policy, taking into
consideration Croatia's obligations toward GATT. The farming policy will
undergo changes and will be enhanced by the established strategic
directions in the short term in the medium term and in the long term. In
this respect, we would like to stress the reforms and re-allocations of the
farming budget, as well as changes in the pricing policy, the customs
tariff policy and the development policy. The impact of the farming policy
that has been implemented up to now on the prices of the chief agricultural
products, the level of protection of domestic prices (the coefficients of
nominal protection) and the possible impacts of the general changes in the
farming policy on the tobacco industry, primarly tobacco growing, are
investigated in this paper.

Summary: International standards are prepared by the technical
committees of the International Organization for Standardization ISO that
are responsible for a certain field. Thus the standards for tobacco and
tobacco products are prepared by Technical Committes ISO/TC 126. During
1993 and 1994, four new ISO standards were issued for tobacco and tobacco
products: ISO 9512:1993, ISO 10185:1993, ISO 10362-2:1994 and ISO
10919:1994. In the period from September 1993 to January 1995, four Draft
International Standards were sent to the member bodies: ISO/DIS 12194,
ISO/DIS 12195, ISO/DIS 8454 and ISO/DIS 6488. At the last meetings of
ISO/TC 126 and its sub.committees held in Cape Town in February 1995 the
proposal to issue the standard ISO 8454 was adopted. As the same meeting,
proposals for the withdrowal of the following three standards are adopted:
ISO 3406:1975, ISO 3612:1977, and ISO 8453:1987. Technical committee ISO/TC
126 has been cooperating closely with the international scientific tobacco
organization CORESTA for a number of years, and many ISO draft
international standards have been prepared by revising CORESTA Recommended

Summary: As part of the breeding programmer for Virginia tobacco,
about 130 different getynopes were tested in 1994. These included lines of
F6 and higher generations, F1 hybrids and some foreign cultivars. This
genetic material was tested in nine comparative experiments using the
standard domestic cultivars Drava and DH 10 as the control. The economic
properties and usability of the investigated tobacco germplasm were
evaluted for resistance to diseases, experiments was evaluated for
resistance to disease, length of vegetation, organoleptic properties,
yield, commercial value per unit of surface area and chemical composition.
Lines that matured earlier were set appart, since the development of early
maturing cultivars is one of our priorities. A number of genotypes were
superior to the standard varieties as regards commercial properties and the
quality of the raw material. The best lines were VBP 22, VBP 143, as well
as 110 and 1115. Apart from good resistance to PVY, medium early maturing
and a good genetic potential for yield these lines also had a satisfactory
quality of the dry tobacco and a balanced chemical composition. Therefore
intensive work on these lines will be carried out in 1995.

Summary: Five new F1 Burley hybrids, three American line varieties,
and the standard cultivar Culinec were investigated in 1994 on two
locations Božjakovina and Pitomača. The aim of the research was to select
potential cultivars for growing under the conditions prevailing in Croatia.
All genotypes were tested for resistance to disease, time of flowering,
qield, quality, and the content of nitrogen components. None of the
genotypes had symptoms of PVY, while a high percentage of plants of all the
genotypes in Božjakovina were infected with TMV. However, it was mainly the
top leaves that were infected, so this did not have a big impact on the
economic properties of the tobacco. The F1 hybrids showed a hybrid vigour
for faster blooming. Two F1 hybrids and one line variety in Bozjakovina and
F1 hybrid in Pitomača were significantly better than the standard as
regards yield. Due to heavy hail, however, the yield results in Pitomača
have to be treated with caution. There were no significant differences in
quality expressed as the average price in Bozjakovina, while in Pitomača
the cultivar TN 90 had significantly lower average price than the standard.
Differences in chemical composition were also found among the genotypes
investigated.

Summary: Rhe results obtained indicate that crop rotation was a
significant biological-cytological category affecting the tobacco leaf
properties and that it was to be preferred over the monoproduction of
tobacco. A crop rotation with a greater number of fields was to be
preferred over crop rotation with a lesser number of fields. As regards
tobacco quality. too crop rotation was evidently to be preferred over
monoproduction, and crop rotation with a greater number of fields was to be
preferred over crop rotation with a lesser number of fields. The chemical
composition of the tobacco was less dependent on the number of crop
rotation fields. The degree of virus infection of tobacco was the most
dependent on wheather the tobacco was growing in plot rotation on a
monoculture. Again, crop rotation was to be preferred over monoproduction
and crop rotation with a greater number of fields was to be preferred over
crop rotation with a lesser number of fields.

Summary: The aim of the preliminary research carried out in
cooperation with the "Duhan" Slatina was to show the importance of the
tobacco sort and the agro-technical measures taken in the final evaluation
of the commercial value of tobacco. Tobacco of the cultivars VaD, DH10 and
Vj9 were grown on the plantation belonging to "Duhan" and intensive
agro-technical measures were carried out (fertilization, topping, etc.).
The cultivars DH10 and Vj9 were grown on private farms in the Slatina area,
but with less intensive agro-technical measures. A sample of the middle
leaves, weighing about six kilograms, was taken from each sort and each
location. A chemical analysis was then made of the tobacco and the series
of cigarettes in the Zadar Tobacco Factory. All the cigarettes were made
from the same materials (100 Cu paper, standard filter and wrapping paper,
no ventilation) and sorted according to weight to 1100 mg/cigarette,
machine smoked and subjected to sensory evaluation. A comparison of the
results obtained showed the importance of agro-technology for tobacco
production. The chemical analysis of the tobacco showed that improved
cultural practice led to stronger tobaccos (2.27% and 2.17% of nicotine at
the plantation, compared to 1.31 and 1.22% on private farms), which were
given higher marks in the sensory evaluation test. A comparison of the
cultivars showed small differences in chemical composition and sensory
evaluation, which points to the greater significance of the proper
application of agro.technology.

Summary: Tobacco curing requires from 0.65 to 1.25 liters of heating
oil per kilogram of cured tobacco. The average consuption of fiel ammounts
to 0.85 l/kg. If tobacco producers achieve an average price of 9.72 kn/kg
for their tobacco and pend an average of 2.13 kn/kg for curing, this
accounts for 21.81% of the production costs. Fuel saving in tobacco curing
can be achieved by harvesting ripe tobacco, so that the curing time is up
to 120 hours. Most curing barns are prefabricate buildings built of various
materials that do not have good thermal insulation properties, so that
losses through the walls, roof and floor may be as high as 16.5%. If there
are crackes between the walls of prefabricated curring barns, the losses
are much higher. During the curing process, the heat required for the
evaporation of water from tobacco leaves and the heat lost by the exchange
of air may amount to as much as 60.30%. At the stage of curing the midrib,
when heat consumption is the greatest, most producers open the blinds to
increase the exchange of air, which increases fuel consumption. There are
numerous curing barns which, when tobacco is being cured at the stage of
midrib curing are not controlled by a moist thermometer, which is very
important for energy savings. The temperature of a moist thermometer at the
midrib curing stage should rise do 45oC to achieve energy savings. Heat
loss through the chimney amounts to as much as 21.5%. The temperatures at
the chimney oulet may be as high as 380oC, so that losses at the chimney
amount to 19.5%.

Summary: The production of cigarettes with low nicotine and tar
contents in the smoke has been a common technologival practice in Western
countries and in the USA for over a quarter of a century, but it started in
Croatia only as late as in 1993. The lack of local research and experience
has led to a high degree of dependence on foreign technologies which are
not ideal, since foreign companies have never been willing to provide their
latest research, but only technologies they are planning to abandon. In
this research, a comparison was made between the chemical composition of
cigarettes that have a low content of nicotine and tar in the smoke. The
nicotine content in the tobacco fo foreign cigarettes ranged from 2.07% to
2.69% and varied only slightly, while the tar and nicotine contents in the
smoke varied a great deal, ranging from 1 to 14 mg and 0.1-1.4 mg per
cigarette, respectively. Foreign cigarettes with low contents of these
components (0.1 and mg/cig.) had a high nicotine content in the tobacco
(2.54% and 2.24%) and did not differ in this respect from cigarettes with
higher nicotine and tar contents in the smoke (1.0 to 1.4 mg of nicotine
and 10 to 14 mg of tar per cigarette). In contrast to this, an attempt was
made in the case of domestic cigarettes to achieve lower nicotine and rat
contents in the cigarette on the basis of a lower percentage of nicotine in
the tobacco (1.62% and 1.74%): This approach is tehnologically not feasible
on the world market and no international company is planning to produce a
low-nicotine cigarette on the basis of tobacco with a low percentage of
nicotine. Rether, the manufacture of such cigarettes involves a number of
technological solutions: ventilation, total combustion without dry
distillation, the filling power of the tobacco expanding, additives,
perforation, and high-retention filters including various materials. The
starting point is the fact that poor (i.e. , low-nicotine) tobacco, after
strong filtration, does not contribute to the quality of smoking, while
stronger tobacco still provides a significant contribution to smoke quality
and smoking quality even after a high degree of filtration and high
retention. The conclusion is that the manufacture of low-tar and
low-nicotine cigarettes does not require tobacco with a low nicotine
content, and that the growing technology need not be changed significantly
by, for example, avoiding topping and sucker control.

Summary:
There are about twenty viral diseases affecting tobacco known in the world
today. These viral diseases differ in economic impact, depending on the
virus, tobacco type, and prevailing natural conditions. In Croatia, in the
case of broad-leaved tobaccos moistly of the Virginia and to some extent
the Burley types, several viruses commonly occur and have a certain
influence on the quality and yield of the tobacco. These are primarly the
tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and the cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), which are
inevitable on Croatian tobacco fields. At planting the number of diseased
plants is small, but at the last harvest all plants are affected to a
greater or lesser extent. other viruses that occur frequently and are
sometimes significant from the economic standpoint are potato virus Y (PVY)
and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV). Early infection with these viruses,
in the nursery or soon after planting, leads to crop failure. Some other
viruses occur, but have not had a serious negative economic impact so far.

Summary: Abient climate affect the conditions inside a warehouse,
the air temperature and relative humidity. which are important for the
proper development of biochemical processes in tobacco In northern Croatia,
the temperature and relative humidity of the ambient air favourable for the
natural ageing of flue-cured tobacco. Some physical and chemical properties
of flue-cured tobacco harvested in 1988 were analyzed over a period of
three of ageing. The research was carried out on the best tobacco of that
year selected according to the grading system and classified into
commercial classes (export - E and domestic - D). The physical and chemical
properties of the tobacco strips (the moisture of the tobacco in cardboard
boxes, the equilibrium moisture content, nicotine, proteins, total N,
reducing sugars and the pH) were determined every 6 months. After three
years of ageing, the moisture of tobacco strips E increased by 12% to 23%,
with the moisture of the tobacco strips D increased by 4% to 6%. The
equilibrium moisture content also increased by 4% to 6% in the case of
tobacco E and by 7% to 8% in the case of tobacco D. There was a drop in the
nicotine content (by 0.6% to 5.6%), the reducing sugars content (by 6% to
17%) and the pH (by 4% to 5%). The protein content and the total nitrogen
content decreased and increased slightly. The changes taking place during
ageing are highly complex. Although they may be slight, they are considered
to be important because they contribute to improving the smoking
characteristics of tobacco.

Summary: Signs from the international market as well as domestic
cireunstances require that costs of tobacco production in Croatia have to
be lowered down in order to gain competitions of Croatian tobacco on the
markets. About 90% of flue-cured tobacco in Croatia is produced by small
family farms, farming on average 5.9 ga of og land, including 3.2 hectars
of tobacco. Previous studies have shown that cost of producing tobacco is
relatively low per hectar but high per kilogram due to the low average
yields obtained. The main goal of this work was therefore to investigate
relations between yields and costs of production under economic conditions
prevailing in the main tobacco producing region in the year 1993. Total
production, costs and economics of eleven farms of various size were
investigated, with special emphasis on their tobacco preoduction. Though
the farms were supplied with a simple record keeping system, farm data were
obtained in a combination with interviews of monographic type, carried on
with each farmer four times a year. Because basic data were investigated in
1989, tobacco preoduction part of the costs was first updated in the 1993
season. So determined costs for particular farms and yield were then used
to asses incremental values of various cost items that could be attributed
to yield increase (decrease). Relations between assumed yields and costs
were then simulated. The final result shows a high proportion (60.9%) of
variable costs in tobacco production on selected farms. Estimated cost of
production of kilogramof tobacco is rising from 2.63 DEM for yield of 2200
kg/ha to 3.96 DEM for the lowest assumed yield of 1200 kg/ha.

Summary: Setting up, implementing, and promoting standardization is
a prerequisite for the full participation of the Republic of Croatia on the
international science. This, of course, also applies to the domain of
tobacco. That is why a committee, under the name of Technical Committee 126
- Tobacco and Tobacco Products, was set up on 28th June 1993 at the State
Office for Standardization and Metrology (DZNM). The task Technical
Committee 126, as a DZNM body, is to draft Croatian standards for tobacco
and tobacco products, to participate in developing proposals for the
regulations implementing the same Act, as well as to participate
effectively in the work of ISO/TC 126. The drafting of the standards
started in 1993. To bring Croatian standards into line with European and
world standards, and in keeping with current Croatian needs, the Republic
of Croatia will gradually take over ISO and/or DIN i.e. DIN ISO standards.

Summary: The aim of the Burley breeding programme is to develop
cultivars meeting the modern requirements of the tobacco industry. This
means a variety of the erectus type, yielding a row material containing
less nicotine, thin leaves, and balanced smoking properties allowing it to
blend well in cigarettes. With this goal in view, a number of lines of the
F9 generation and F1 hybrids, as well as some foreign varieties, were
tested at the experimental fields in Božjakovina and Pitomača in 1993. A
number of the genotypes tested, particularly BHT1 neet the established
criteria as regards plant morphology, disease resistance, cured tobacco

two decades. Due to its numerous properties this fumigant has become a part
of the procedure of seedling production and has, moreover, become one of
the major prerequisites for the successful production of tobacco seedings.
Doubts have emerged recently about the harmful effects of methyl bromide on
the environment. It is thought to contribute to the appearance of ozone
holes in the Earth's atmosphere. In our research, dosomet has proved to be
a possible successful substitute for methyl bromide. It is equally
effective in disinfecting tobacco nursery soils, but its application
requires some modifications in the procedure of seedling production.

Summary: The influence of fertilization with phosphorus on tobacco
yield, on the mobile Al content in the soil, and on the potassium, calcium
and magnesium content in tobacco leaves was investigated on calcified and
non-calciffied loess soil with an acid reaction. The experiment comprised
six treatments randomized according to the block method with four
repetitions. When 3.5 t/ha dolomite was applied, the soil acidity and
mobile aluminium content were reduced. The magnesium content in the tobacco
leaf increased considerably, and so did the tobacco yield.

Summary: The research, started in 1993, includes treatments eith the
irrigation, fertilization and crop rotation of tobacco. The cultures in
plot rotation, apart from tobacco, were wheat, barley, hemp, flax,
soybeans, chamomile, and others. The aim of this research, which is to be
carried out over a number of years, is to try to contribute to knowledge
about plant physiology, as well as to provide results applicable in
practice. Apart from the economic properties, the analyses will cover
photosynthesis and transpiration (when the equipment required is obtained),
the activity of the enzime nitrate reductase, starch, chlorophyll, raw
smoke obtained), the activity of the enzyme nitrate reductase, starch,
chlorophyll, raw smoke condensate, serial analyses of tobacco, and the
accumulation of nutrients in the soil and in plant tissue during
vegetation. This paper presents the content of NO3, NH4, Cl, chlorophyll,
nicotine, proteins, total nitrogen, reducing sugars, K2O, CaO, MgO and raw
ash in tobacco leaves during vegetation. The tobacco samples analyzed were
taken during tobacco growing on 1st July, 14th July, and 24th July.
Statistical analyses of the results show that some of the components
investigated were dependent on fertilization and irrigation.

Summary: Three gradations of Organo and Biopost, alone and in
combination with mineral fertilizers, were investigated. The experiment
also included, apart from a control variant with no fertilizer, pure
mineral fertilizer, as well as manure, alone and in combination with
mineral fertilizer. It was thus possible to conduct a complex study the
effectiveness of these fertilizers in relation to the following parameters:
the tobacco leaf yield, the share of particular classes, and the chemical
composition of the tobacco. The research was carried out on the
experimental plot of the Zagreb Tobacco Institute in Pitomača in the period
from 1990 to 1993 on loess soil with multilayered Pleistocene sands. The
results obtained are interesting in several ways. The application of
Biopost and Organo compared to classical organic fertilizers has some
specific characteristics, chiefty with regard to the soil biophases. The
effectiveness of both fertilizers increased when mineral fertilizers were
also applied, which also goes for manure.

Summary: Tobacco production in Kutjevo has a long tradition. Good
growing results have been achieved on land belonging to the Kutjevo
Agricultural and Food Processing Plant, while the results achieved by
contract farms have been poor. Over the past several years, experts at the
Kutjevo plant have been carring out tobacco growing measures to achieve
higher yields and better tobacco quality. In 1993 observations were made of
topping and sucker control on 90% of the area on which tobacco was grown. A
proper and timely preparation of machines and workers was carried out.
Topping was performed by hand, while the sucker control treatments was
carried out by a MIO-STANDARD machine. In the first treatment, immediately
after topping, the tobacco was sprayed with Offshoot, 14 l/ha, using a
total of 500 litres of liquid. The noyyles used were TEEJET tip TG-5 and
TG-3, three above each two with a pressure of 1.5-2.0 bar, making possible
through spraying of the buds. After 15-20 days a second treatment was
carried out with MH30 in a quantity of 14 l/ha, with a total of 500 liters
of liquid per hectare. There were three TEEJET tip TX-12 nozzles above each
the vest possible coverage of the tobacco leaf surface. The speed of the
machine in the first and second treatments was 3-4 km/h. The hight of
tooping ranged from 105-139 cm with an average of 113 cm, and the number of
leaves on the stald ranged from 21 to 24, with and average of 22 leaves.
The tobacco yield in the case of producers who carried out topping and
sucker control ranged from 2293 to 2505 kg/ha, and the price achieved
ranged from 2.97 to 3.05 DEM per kilogram.

Summary: Knowing the alkaloid content is very in determining tobacco
quality. The method of gas chromatography makes it possible to determine
individual alkaloids in tobacco, as well as to determine the share of
nornicotine in the total alkaloids, which is an important piece of
information for selection. Tobaccos harvested n 1992 and 1993 were
extracted with n-hexane from an alkaline medium and analyzed using a
modified gas chromatography method according to lyerly with a flame
ionization detector. No nornicotine was found in the selection material
harvested in 1992 which was analyzed. In the standards planted in parallel,
the nornicotine content ranged from 0 to 10% of the total alkaloids.
Relatively small nornicotine levels, ranging from 0 to 6% of the total
alkaloids, were found in the standard tobacco sorts Drava and DH-10
harvested in 1992, as well as in the Burley-type sorts Čulinec and TN-86.
An analysis of commercial tobacco of the Vrginia type, harvested in 1993,
showed that, depending on the class, they contained from 5.5 to 13.7%
nornicotine in the total alkaloids.

Summary: The relationships of the seasonal rainfall with nicotine
content and yield of cured burley tobacco for the period 1983.1993 was
studied. The data from the trials carried out at the Tobacco Experiment
Station Božjakovina were used for this investigation, precipitation for the
May-August period amounted to 233 mm -+ 27,4%, the yield of cured tobacco
Čulinec variety average 2887 kg/ha-+18,5% and it was found, at the same
time, the average nicotine content of 2,90%-+28,2%. the total yield of
nicotine per hectar did not vary so much, as its percentage in the leaves,
except in extreme climatic conditions. The nicotine content was inversely
proportional with seasonal rainfall. Precipitation during June-July period
affected mostly to the nicotine content, the regression being
Y=279,440-49,427x and correlation coeficient r=0,848, with x meaning
rainfall in mm.The sum of seasonal rainfall and yield had a linear
relationships, which is illustrated by equation y=19,046 + 0,71x and
r=0,591. The negarive correlation of nicotine content and yield was found,
the coefficient of correlation amounted to r=674, with regression line
Y=4144,30-434,13x.

Summary: Sucker control and topping are essential measures in the
intenyive, up-to-date production of large-leaved tobacco fo the Virginia
and Burley types. Various contact and systemic agents are used for sucker
control. The most frequently used of the systemic agents is maleic
hydrazide in the from of sodium, choline, diethanol aminer or triethanol
amine salts and potassium salts with 30% active substance - maleic
hydrazide Maleic hydrazide inhibits the process of glicolitic decomposition
of carbohydrates, prevents the biosynthesis of proteins and cell
multiplication. This action of maleic hydrazide on plant growth has found a
practical application in increasing the productivity of tobacco. Maleic
hydrazide is simple to apply, and its effectiveness in sucker control is
almost total. The experiment was carried out on flue-cured tobaccos,
harvested in 1992, treated with systemic suckericides as follows. Maleic
hydrazide residues were determined by reduction and hydrolysis of maleic
hydrazide into hydrazine, and hydrazine was determined
spectrophotometrically with p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde. There is no low in
croatia on the permitted level of MH residues level permitted in Germany is
80 mm.

Summary: Cigarette aeration has a considerable effect on the tar and
nicotine content in the smoke condensate. Due to the changes in the
comosition of the smoke condensate, ventilation also affects the sensory
properties of the cigarette. Two types of domestic Virginia tobacco, grown
in the Kutjeco area, were used as the raw material in the manufacture of
two types of cigarettes. The first type was designed as a commercial
cigarette with no additional ventilation. The second cigarette was made so
as to increase the ventilation by means of a perforated cork tip and a
highly porous plug wrap paper. Cigarette paper of 110 CU was used for both
types of cigarette. The first type of cigarette was also used to compare
the usability of the tobaccos. The usability of tobacco is based on the
organoleptic and physical characteristics of the leaf, the chemical
composition and relationship of certain components, and on the smoking
characteristics, which include the sensory properties and the properties
determined by machine smoking. The cigarette made with increased
ventilation had about 32% less raw smoke condensate and tar in the smoke
condensate than the cigarette without ventilation. The nicotine level in
the smoke condensate was also lower, and so was the carbon monoxide level
in the mainstream smoke. The sensory properties such as aroma, flavour,
strenght and irrigation changed when ventilation was increased in the case
of both types of tobacco.

Summary: Tobacco Industry of former Yugoslavia was of significance
for the economy of that country and in that part of the world, though
deteriorating in years before it cease to exist in the 1991. Five new
countries energing out of the former Yugoslavia; Bosnia and herzegovina,
Croatia, macedonia, Slovenia and so called Federal Republic of Yugoslavia,
have been examined in regard to their tobacco industries and short run
prospects of those industries to continue on its own. Croatia is self
sufficient in cegarette proeduction and have prospective to become exporter
of at last 3 billion pcs. cigarettes, substituting market of the former
Yzgoslavia with international market. Becouse of soil and climatic
condition Croatia will have surplus of flue-cured tobacco. At least of 8000
tones yearly will be offered to the international market. Macedonia is
expected to reduce cigarette production but will be short in both
cigarettes and tobaccos. Slovenia will become bigger tobacco importer but
looking for new cigarette export markets at the same time. Federal
Republic of Yugoslavia is in a short run perspective short in tobacco and
in cigarettes in about the same amount. Though the paper gives basic
analyses of the present situation and history in tobacco industry,
predictions given are an expert estimates based on the several assumptions
and existing knowledge of the situation in the region. Among the main
assumptions are also governments policies toward activation of existing
resources in tobacco industry of the individual states, after the end of
war hostilities in the region. In that respects the Croatia is expected to
havevery soon a modern organization of tobacco production, similar to the
other European countries and to become a country with strong flue-cured and
cigarette production.

Summary: Properly performed agrotechnical measures, which take
intoconsideration the pedoclimatic conditions, are factors which leadto
adequate yields and tobacco quality. Desirable tobacco yieldsand quality
may be achieved by planting tobacco in a density ofabout 250000 plants/ha
(with a spacing of 90-110 cmm x 35-40 cm),i.e. by harvesting 400-500000
leaves from one hectare. This canbe achieved if the tobacco is topped to
17-20 leaves forharvesting. Tobacco irrigation stabilizers the yield
andespecially the quality.

Summary: This paper presents the basic results of the general
interview on725 farms but concentrates on the results of the
threemonographic investigations. The vineyard production was not foundto be
economically attractive, but the small farms justified itsinclusion into
their farming activities by the higher employmentof family members, the
higher total income obtained on the farmsand the fact that the farm fixed
costs were prrtly spread out tocover the vineyard production. Alternative

Summary: Threshing separates the leaf into the lamina or strips and
thestem. The lamina contained more nitrogen components and lessreducing
sugars, crude ash, CaO, MgO and K2O than the leaf. Thecharacteristics of
the stem were a low content of nicotine(0.28-0.49%), protein and total N
and a high content of K2O andMgO. The stem is a raw material that has found
its application inthe cigarette industry in the form of expanded stems

Summary: The growing and production of high-quality Virginia
tobaccodepends on strict adherence to proper growing proceduresthroughout
vegetation. In 1991, the vegetation of flue-curedtobacco was under the
influence of a large amount ofprecipitation, which exceeded significantly
the average over anumber of years and the amount required for the
development ofVirginia tobacco. This led to high yields, but after curing
thetobacco lacked body and had a very low nicotine content(0.56-1.42%). If
the technological procedure of topping andspraying with suckercides had
been performed, the yield obtainedwould have been higher by at least 20%,
and the raw materialwould have had body and the optimum nicotine content of
1.5-2.0%.

Summary: Smoking characteristics of tobacco are as important as
chemicaland physical ones for correct evaluation of usuability of
tobaccoRelationships of chemical, physical and smoking properties
ofvirginia and burley tobacco are elaborated in this paper. Burleytobacco
was sampled by stalk positions (F, C, B, T) and location(Božjakovina,
Pitomača) and in two cases, all leafs were takenfor samples. Virginia
tobacco was sampled by location (Pitomača,Kutjevo) and by grading system.
Each sample weighted 4-5 kg andproduced 4000-5000 cigarettes. All
cigarettes were made with samecigarette paper, filter and topping paper.
Chemical and physicalproperties and smoking sensory tests were carried out
and alldata were investigated. Significant relationships were foundbetween
chemical composition of tobacco, physical properties ofcigarettes and
smoking sensory tests, respectively.

Summary: A year after the declaration of the independence and
sovereignty of the Republic of croatia, in October 1992, a Croatian law was
adopted obliging Croatian cigarette producers to print the health warning
"Smoking is harmful to health", as well as data on the tar and nicotine
contents in the smoke, on the original packing of their products. According
to a decision by the Croatian Goverment, this obligation definitely came
into force on 31st January 1994. Bearing in mind the law that is now valid
in Croatia and the wish of Croatia to bring its products, including, of
course, cigarettes, into line with the requirements of the modern market, a
survey was made of the most significant characteristics of three popular
Croatian cigarettes over the past ten years. The data, drawn from research
results obtained over a ten-year period, show a gradual, slight trend
toward reducing the tobacco mass in cigarettes, the puff number, the tar
content of cigarettes, the nicotine content in the smoke condensate and the
carbon monoxide content in the mainstream smoke. The indicators established
lead us to expect a further, faster reduction of the smoke components of
Croatian cigarettes. Croatian cigarettes will thus relatively soon come
close to meeting the requirements of the Concil Directives of the European
Communities.

Summary: Knowing the alkaloid content is very important for the
determination of tobacco quality. Chromatographic methods enable to
determine individual alkaloids in tobacco, as well as to determine the
portion of nornicotine in the total alkaloids. This is an important
information for the selection. The alkaloids are extracted from dry tobacco
leaves with aqueous solution which containes 5% of acetic acid and 20% of
methanol. Characoal is added, and after sonification solution is filtrated.
Analysis is performed by high pressure liquid chromatography with 2,2'
-bipyridin as internal standard. Separation is done on reverse phase C18
column with diethylamine-phosphate buffer at pH 7.5 and acetonitrile as the
mobile phase. UV detector at 254 nm is used for the detection.

Summary: About 90% of flue-cured tobacco in Croatia is preoduced by
small family farms, farming on average 5.9 ha of agricultural land,
including 3.2 ha of tobacco. previous studies have shown that the cost of
producing tobacco is relatively low per hectare but high per kilogram due
to the low average yields obtained. The main goal of this work was
therefore to investigate relations between yields and costs of production
under economic conditions prevailing in the main tobacco producing region
in the year 1993. Total preoduction, costs and economics of 11 farms of
various sizes were investigated, with special emphasis on their tobacco
production. Though the farms were supplied with a simple record keeping
system, farm data were obtained in a combination with interview of
monographic type, carried on with each farmer four times a year. Because
basic data were investigated in 1989, tobacco production part of the costs
was first updated in the 1993 season. So determined costs for particular
farms and yields were then used to assess incremental values of various
cost items that could be attributed to yield increase (decrease). Relations
between assumed yields and costs were then simulated. The final result
shows a high proportion (60.9%) of variable costs in tobacco production on
slected farms. Estimated cost of production of kilogram of tobacco is
rising from 2.70 DEM for yield of 2200 kg/ha to 3.99 DEM for the lowest
assumed yield of 1200 kg/ha.

Summary: The effect of fertilization with different quantities of
Cu, Zn and B on yield and quality of flue-cured tobacco was investigeted
during 1989-1991. The experiment was set up according the block method with
four repetitions on sandy loam soils at the experiment, fertilization for
tobacco were with 20 kg/hha of nitrogen added by fertilizer mexture
NPK/5:20:30. According to the experimental design some treatments were
additionaly fertilized with Cu, Zn and B. Rates of soil applied Cu, Zn and
B ranged from 2-8 kg/ha, 2-9 kg/ha and 0.5-5 kg/ha, rspectively. These
nutrients were applied in two bands spaced 20 cm apart with the tobacco row
in the middle, and placed at depth of about 10 cm. The content of Cu, Zn
and B in the soil prior to initation of were 2.1 mg/ml, 1.0 mg/ml and 0,37
mg/ml, respectively. Yield and content of nicotine were not affected by
application of either Cu, Zn and B. The research results showed that in wet
season it can be expected same positive effects of application of Zn and B
in increase content of reducing sugars while in dry season increasing
application of B can give stable, even a better, visual quality of cured
tobacco leaf. The content of Zn and B in leaf tissue were significantly
increased by increased applying Zn and B in the soil. generaly, suplemental
fertilizer applications of Cu, Zn and B nutrients are apparently not needed
for flue-cured tobacco production on sandy loam soils, in Northwest
Croatia.

Summary: The quality of tobacco as a raw material for the cigarette
industry is influence by a number of various factors: genetic factors, the
climatic conditions during growth and harvesting, harvesting time, curing
and redrying, and, finally the ageing of tobacco in a warehouse. The
storage conditions (the temperature and relative humidity of the air) are
two essential factors for the proper ageing of flue-cured tobacco. In
northern Croatia, the climatic conditions are favourable for the natural
ageing of flue-cured tobacco. Some physical and chemical properties of
flue-cured tobacco harvested in 1988 were analyzed over a period of three
years of ageing. The research was carried out on the best tobacco of that
year selected according to the grading system and classified into
commercial classes (export - E and domestic - D). The physical and chemical
properties of the tobacco strips (moisture of tobacco, equilibrium moisture
content, nicotine, proteins, total N, reducing sugars and pH) were
determined every 6 months. After three years of ageing, the moisture of
tobacco strips E increased by 12 to 23%, while the moisture of tobacco
strips D increased by 4 to 6%. The equilibrium moisture content also
increased by 4 to 6% in the case of tobacco E and by 7 to 8% in the case of
tobacco D. There was a drop in the nicotine content (by 6 to 17%) and pH
(by 4 to 5%). The protein content and total nitrogen content respectively
decreased and increased slightly. The ageing process is complex and it is
known to have a positive effect on improving tobacco quality.

Summary: Three-year field trials were carried out on luvisol on
theexperimental field of the Tobacco Institute Zagreb. Three basicploughing
depths were investigated (20, 30 and 40 cm), three soilpreparation methods
(without ridges, autumn ridges and springridges) as well as three nitrogen
fertilizer rates (0, 20 and 40kg/ha). Significantly higher leaf and root
yields and somewhatbetter quality were obtained with deeper ploughing.
Nitrogenapplied in fertilization significantly increased the content
ofnicotine and reduced the content of reducing sugars.

Summary: The anther culture of flue cured tobacco was
established.Androgenesis induction depended on a pollen stage,
genotype, ageof the donor plant and cold treatment. In this study
1718haploids were raised. Using the method for viral double-strandedRNA
isolation and ELISA technique, it was prooved that haploidswere virus-free.
High percentage (87%) of inoculated plantssurvived the inoculation with
potato virus Y (PVY). Haploids thatindicated a tolerance to PVY were
diploidized by culturingleaf-segments with midle vein.

Summary: Because of its high capability to absorb sauces, Burley
tobacco is along with Virginia, an unavoidable component of blended
cigarettes. Unfortunately, due to the poor assortment and indequate
agrotechny, the current production can meet less than 10% of the domestic
demand. Attempts are, therefore, made to develop cultivars that would,
under the growing conditions prevailing in Croatia, satisfy the
requirements of both tobacco producers and tobacco products. Part of this
task was also the ovject of these investigations, designed as a two-year
cultivar assay and carried out on the experimental field of the Tobacco
Institute Zagreb at Božjakovina in 1992 and 1993. The aim of the assay was
to test some morphological, economic and chemical characteristics of the
Burley tobacco genotypes listed below, as well as to determine the the
coeficients for calculation of their surface area and establish
correlations between certain leaf properties. Burley tobacco is known for
its preference for humid climate and slightly heavier soil, in which
respect the Božjakovina locality is satisfactory, though the sequence of
weather conditions during the investigation period did not follow the
"normal" climatic course but demonstrated marked climatic aberrations
tending towards expressive drought, particularly in the first investigarion
year. Investigarions were conducted alternately on two soil types
pseufogley-gley and pseudogley eutric. Both soil t

Summary: The DH 10 cultivar is F1 hybrid between the GV3 line
(TobaccoInstitute Zagreb) and the Virginia D variety (Germany). GV3 isthe
breeding line resistant to blue mould and PVY, but lowquality. Virginia D,
the filler tobacco type variety is alsoresistant to PVY, but it is
extremely susceptible to peronospora. The DH 10 cultivar has sufficient
resistance to both, PVY andperonospora. It yields more and better quality
than standardvariety Podravina, contains more sugars and slightly
lessnitrogen components. In smoking tests it is simillar to"Podravina". DH
10 is simillar height like "Podravina" (120-124cm), with 1-2 leaves more,
and it flowers day or two earlier.
