Summary: The research was carried out on the effects of the fungicide preparations Radotiram plus (250 ml/100 kg soybean seeds) and Baytan (250 g/100 kg soybean seeds) and fertilization with different nitrogen rates (0, 45, 90 kg N/ha) upon nodulation and yield of soybean in field trials. The application of the fungicide preparations Radotiram plus and Baytan had no significant effects upon the nodule number and nodule dry weight, as well as on the yield of soybean. Different rates of mineral nitrogen applied had no significant effect upon nodule number per plant but the rate of 90 kg N/ha caused a significant reduction in nodule dry weight per plant. Higher rate of mineral nitrogen (90 kg N/ha) caused the increase in the soybean yield, yet in interaction with bacterization, no significant effect of that rate (90 kgN/ha) was determined.

Summary: The effect of imazaquine on pigments, N-protein content and nodulation of soybean was investigated. The soybean was grown in perlit moistened with the nutrient solution deficient in nitrogen. The bacterial inoculation was carried out with strain D344 Bradyrhizobium japonicum. The herbicide was applied preemergence at a rate of 150 g/ha. Seven weeks after the treatment with imazaquine no statistical significant changes inthe content of pigments and N-protein were found. It appears, however, that imazaquine might affect the dry weight of nodules.

Summary: A constant increase in the rates of fertilizers applied on plots under agricultural crops made the arable land production a factor contributing considerably to the pollution of human environment. One of the possible means of reducing the water pollution is a replacement of mineral fertilizers containing high rates of the nutrients with organic fertilizers and biological activators in order to activate the soil supplies and to develop substrates of better physical and chemical properties. In this respect, a study on the possibility of replacing almost standard fertilizers applied on soybean plots with mineral fertilizers, manure and other types of organic "fertilizers" was initiated on test fields of PIK Belje in the 1988 growing season. The results were obtained by evaluating their effects on the yield and quality of soybean kernels.

Summary: During the two-year investigation works conducted in 1991 and 1992 at the Jelenščak Reclamation Test Field, Kutina, the concentrations of NO3-N and NH4-N were monitored in drainage waters of different pipe drainage systems, with pipe distance of 15m, 20 m, 25 m and 30 m, with the hydraulic filter material - gravel or without it. The investigations were performed in pseudogley and gley soils. In 1991, the corn was cultivated, fertilized with the total of 202 kg/ha of nitrogen, and in 1992 the oat was cultivated and fertilized with the total of 50 kg/ha of nitrogen. The drainage water samples were analyzed for each year and all pipe drainage system alternative four times. The results have proven that the average concentration of NO3-N in 1991 ranged from the average minimum value of 13.0 mg/l to the average maximum concentration of 16.3 mg/l. In 1992, the average concentration of NO3-N ranged from the average minimum value of 11.0 mg/l to the average maximum value of 13.1 mg/l. The average concentration of NH4-N in 1991 ranged from the average minimum value of 1.12 mg/l to the average maximum value of 1.54 mg/l. In 1992, the determined average minimum value was 0.53 mg/l to the average maximum concentration of 0.70 mg/l. The results were statistically analyzed and it was determined that there were no significant differences between the alternative tests with respect to the concentrations of the mineral forms of nitrogen (NO3-N and NH4-N) washed out from the soil.

Summary: During 1989 and 1990 efficiency of six Bradyrhizobium japonicum strains in field trials was tested. The effect of fertilization with different rates of mineral nitrogen on nodulation and yield of soybean was also studied. Increased rates of mineral nitrogen resulted in reduction of nodule dry weight. In 1989 nodule dry weight was significantly superior with strain D344 in respect to the other strains while in 1990 significant differences between different strains of B.japonicum were not determined. Bacterization has shown significantly positive effect on seed yield. Significant differences between different strains were also determined. In both years the highest seed yield obtained was with application Hup+2 and Hup+3 strains of B.japonicum. In 1989 application of mineral nitrogen caused significantly lower seed yield while in 1990 the highest seed yield obtained was with application of 180 kgN/ha but between that rate and 60 kgN/ha no significant differneces were determined.

Summary: The effect of three fungicides for seed treatment and fertilization with different rates of mineral nitrogen on nodulation and soybean yield planted as first and second crop was evaluated. The fungicides thiram (64 g a.i./100 kg soybean seed)+ sodium molybdate (21.25 g a.i. /100 kg soybean seed),triadimenol (37.5 g a.i./100 kg soybean seed), carboxin (50 ga.i. /100 kg soybean seed) + thiram (50 g a.i. /100 kg soybeanseed) did not result in detrimental effects on the nodule number and nodule dry weight as well as on the soybean yield. In general, different rates of mineral nitrogen (0, 45, 90 kgN/ha) had no significant effect on the nodulation although it was determined that higher rates of nitrogen caused reduction both in nodule number and nodule dry weight. Only in 1990 the rate of 90 kgN/ha caused significant reduction in nodule dry weight. Higher rates of mineral nitrogen had no significant effect on the increase of soybean yield with the exception of 1990, when statistically higher yield was obtained by applying of 90 kgN/ha. However, in interaction with bacterization no significant effect of that rate was determined either.

Summary: Relations between dehydrogenase activity, proteolytic activity, viable plate counts and physical and chemical properties of 12 various soil types were determined. Correlation analyses showed that dehydrogenase and proteolytic activities were significantly (P=0.01) related to humus content as well as to total nitrogen content. Dehydrogenase and proteolytic activities were also positively correlated with total number of microoragnisms.Proteolytic activity was correlated (P=0.01) with number of ammonifiers (r=0.74). No significant correlation was observed between dehydrogenase, proteolytic activity and percentage of clay. Significant correlation between dehydrogenase and proteolytic activity was determined (r=0.59).

Summary: The main objective was to evaluate the efficiency of several Hup+ strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Sinorhizobium fredii and to select strains with higher efficiency to improve productivity. In field experiments it was tried to increase seed yield and protein content of soybean by using different Hup+ strains of B.japonicum. In all experiments inoculation has always shown significantly positive effect on seed yield in respect to control. At some locations no significant differences between different strains for inoculation were determined while inoculation of soybean seed with Hup+ strains of B.japonicum caused significantly higher seed yield at other locations. Inoculation with S.fredii has not shown significantly positive effect on seed yield as well as on seed protein content. Seed protein content was significantly superior with Hup+ strain in respect to other strains.

Summary: Gram-negative soil bacteria of the genus Rhizobium have the ability to infect leguminous plants and induce the host to make root nodules within which the bacteria fix nitrogen. In R. leguminosarum, all nodulation (nod) genes are clustered on the DNA fragment of about 12 kilobases, located on the large symbiotic plasmid pRL1JI. We isolated two autochthonous strains of R. leguminosarum bv. viciae from very numerous and big nodules observed on the roots of peas and vetches grown in soils of northern Croatia. New isolates were compared with the standard strain of R. leguminosarum bv. viciae 248 by electron microscope (ultrastructure analysis) and Southern hybridization (analysis of rRNA operons). Further analysis of two new strains included nodA and nodD genes, known to be involved in the induction of root hair curling and the regulation of nodulation, respectively. nodD is located next to nodA on the plasmid, but two genes are transcribed in the opposite directions from bi-directional promoter region. nodA and nodD genes are, as expected, located on megaplasmid in both autochthonous strains. However, Southern hybridization analysis of two local isolates clearly shows differences in restriction patterns. Two of the most interesting changes are the appearance of new EcoRI restriction site and the absence of HindIII site in the bi-directional promoter region located between nodA and nodD genes in one strain. Observed changes may be connected with its different phenotypical characteristics.
