Summary: The climate in Republic of Croatia is very diverse, from
Mediterranean to continental, so is the relief. Undoubtedly, it greatly
influenced the development of different species of grass and clover. By
collecting wild species of grasses and clovers, genetic basis used in
breeding process has been broadened. Development of new varieties provides
solution for intensive production of fodder crops both in hilly terrain and
in lowlands. Department of fodder crops cooperates with 80 countries
worldwide and possesses a gene bank with over 400 entries.
Keywords: develop, new variety, grasses, clovers, application
Research goals: The main goal of the investigation is to supply our
agricultural producers with scientifically founded results that will ensure
high and quality fodder production - a basis for advanced and profitable
livestock production. In order to accomplish this goal, intensive work is
being conducted on developing domestic varieties of grass and clover
species adapted to local ecological conditions. They should harmonize well
in clover and grass mixtures, have good regrowth and should give high and
stable yields of quality fodder. In addition, varieties intended for
pastures, meadows and clover and grass mixtures should be sparated, i.e.
for specific purposes and time of growing.
