Summary: Influenge of empty spaces on their border plants of two soybean cultivars was studied in the Experimental field of Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Zagreb in 1967, 1969 i 1970. The spaces were 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25 and 0.30 m. Yield and yield components of the border plants form latter emphy spaces were compared with the plants from the usual plant spacing of 0.05 m. Increased space gave generally border plant with increased yield. For some traits a significant cultivar x space interaction was found. The results varied with season.

Summary: Maize seed set and yield can be affected by drought stress during the vegetation period. One of the used indications of drought tolerance has been silk dalay in relation to pollination date, which is easy to observe. In 1990 at the Maksimir location, there were recorded two periods of drought stress, one after seeding and the other during the flowering period of maize. In order to use the natural drought stress conditions for screning drought tolerant maize inbred lines among those of domestic origin and those from domestic germplasm improved with the introduced germplasm 280 lines was analysed. for this purpose the silk delay, number and yield of seed per ear of selfpollinated plants were recorded. The silk delay varied among the lines from 0-10 days. Regarding the earliness offlowering, there was found slight, but not regular, increase of number of seeds and seed yield with the later flowering date. At the same time these traits showed no correlation with the length of silk dalay.

Summary: In corn production there has been a constant increase in yielddue to genetic improvement of hybrids and other factors. The germplasm used in breeding new inbred lines is of a relatively narrow genetic basis. The germplasm maintained in the national and international cort collections represents a broad genetic variability of various traits but little used for breeding purposes. There are indications that Jugoslav cort germplasm has a genetic diveristy which could contribute to further improvement of yield and other traits through breeding. Besides, the Jugoslav corn germplasm could be a source of inbred lines of a different heterotic pattern fromthe BSSS or Lancaster lines. Interesting genes of different cortn genotypes could be transfered into superior recombinants through recurrent selection. There are two ways of selecting the superior individuals in a population, by phenotype and by genotype, i.e. on the basis of performance value of the progeny. The progeny of the plant in question can be from the cross with a tester or from selfpollination. This can result in different duration of a selection cycle and in different genetic gain. Considering the fact that shading good genes are shaded by poor traits, or masked by bad genes there is the possibility of applying recurrent selection where genotypes with only good traits are included in synthetic population, and the possibility of applying the system in which various genotypes could be included. With poorer genotypes the process of recurent selection lasts longer before the population is brought to the level where breeding new lines can start.

Summary: Tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum L, is a selfpollinated species. It is an alotetraploid which originated from the species Nicotiana silvestris and Nicotiana tomentosiformis. Somatic chromosome number of tobacco, 2n, is 48. The tobacco inflorescence is terminal panicle. Emasculation and hybridization of tomacco is done easliy. Within the tobacco species there have been developed different tobacco types. Most important components of the american blend cigarette are the flue-cured and burley tobacco types. The tobacco types differ from each other in morphological characteristics of the plant, in physical, chemical and smoking traits of the cured leaf, in the requirements for the growing conditions and in the way of curing. In addition to yield, the most important breeding goal in a tobacco breeding program is quality which comprises of various physical and chemical characteristics of the cured leaf. Thus, it is a complex trait. Indication of the quality is nicotine content, sugar content, protein content, content of total nitrogen, inorganic matters, total particulte matter etc. The most dangerous pathogens for tobacco are blue mold (Peronospora tabacina Adam), PVY, tobacco mossaic virus, tomato spoted wilt virus, block root (Thielaviopsis basicola) and nematodes. Among other traits more attention in tobacco breeding programs is given to lodging resistance, suckers, length of vegetation period, and to the response to curing. in tobacco breeding the most often used method is the pedigree method. Less is used the single seed descent method, the backcross method and the haploid techniques. By using genetic engineeringthe resistance to different pathogens and herbicides has been transfered into tobacco. This shows that biotechnology could be used for developing new genetic variability and, that a new approache in tobacco breeding could be made by complementing conventional methods of bareeding with biotechnological techiniques.

Summary: The first French international conference on wheat "DEFI BLE 90" was organized and held on a very high level in Paris at the beginning of the fall 1990. This paper presents the organization and the course of the conference. First presented are brief outlines of the six plenary papers in which wheat production was analysed from ecological, commercial and political standpoints on national and international levels. The work caried out in eight separate sections, from A to H, is also briefly presented with special attention to section C "Wheat, genetic and technical innovation" and section G Wheat, production and environment". The conclusions given can be of interest to the members of the Seedsmen society of Croatia. It has been clearly pointed out that Wheat is not only a variety and certified seed but obviously, much more than that. It we want to maintain and to improve what we have achieved in wheat breeding and production in our country up to now, we should follow many relevant procedures already applied in France for a long time.

Summary: Twewnty two F4 and seven F5 progenies from narrow and broad leaflets soybean crosses were studied at Faculty of Agriculture Sciences in Zagreb during 1988 and 1989. A weak correlation (r = 0,28, b = 0,088) or no correlation at all was found. The number of seeds per pod determined by mode was 2,5 to 2,9 in narrow leaflet and 2,5 to 2,6 in broad leafled genotypes. The broad leafled line 488/88 from cross L 1159/61-1 x 121V showed 10% of four-seeded pos what indicated the possibility of combining the broad leafled, high seed number per pod and early maturity characteristic into one genotype.

Summary: DH10 is a new hybrid variety of flue-cured tobacco released in 1991. A well developed plant of the variety is dark-green in colour and is about 164 cm high before and about 121 cm after topping. It has about 20 leaves (19 to 22). During ripening the leaves, if well developed, hang down. The leaves are narrower and longer than those of the variety Podravina. The colour of seed is dark brown. The highest yield of cured leaf achieved with the variety in an experiment at a normal fertilization rate was 3552 kg/ha, at the average price od 464 din/kg (control: 3391 kg/ha, 423 din/kg). At the same time, with very intensive fertilization, a yield of 3600 kg/ha was obtained and the price was 443 din/kg (control: 3732 kg/ha, 386 din/kg). In commercial production the variety has shown to be a moderate yielder. Its somewhat less bodied, but it cures well and after curing leaves are of the quality mostly between 2nd and 4th grade. It has a good chemical composition and is good in smoking although, not possessing a typical Virginia quality. The variety has shown to be tolerant to lodigind, PVY and to higher quanitites of nitrogen in soil. Thus, it is suitable for growing on in heavier soils with a high percentage of organic matter. It matures a little earlier than the Podravina variety (H10).

Summary: The basic component of American and European blend cigarette is flue-cured tobacco. The USA flue cured tobacco cultivars have genetic basis for high yield, good physical, dhemical and smoking quality, but are susceptible to PVY. The latter disease is one of the worst tobacco diseases in Croatia. The American flue-cured tobacco cuultivars susceptible to PVY thus can not be grown in Croatia. Resistant flue-cured tobacco cultivars have lower quality in comparison to the ones susceptible to PVY. The goal of this breeding program was to obtain flue-cured tobacco genotypess with high yield and good quality characteristics and resistant to PVY. For that purpose the cultivars McNair 944, K326 i Delgold were crossedwith NC744 and Virginia D and source breeding populations were obtained. From these populations by combination of pedigree and single seed descent method homozygous breeding lines were developed. The lines were tested in the field experiments. Most of about 50 lines had good resistence to PVY and compared favourably in analized agronomic and chemical characteristics with the control hybrid DH11. Preliminary smoking results indicate good smoking quality of the lines. The lines will be further tested for combining ability in order to develop hybrid cultivars resistant to PVY, of high yield, and good physical, chemical and smoking quality.

Summary: Molecular gen markers, isozymes and restriction fragment length polymorphysm (RFLP) are used in breeding and seed production of maize and other crops. Isozymes as gen markers are used im various investigations, but their use is limited by the limited corerage of total genom (20-50%) which can be analysed by elecrtophoresis. The RFLP method, as well as PCR and RAPD are more precixse and enable better screening of genetic variability in a population than classical (morphological) markers, and they can be analysed in any growth stage of plant or seed without their destruction. At the present time, molecular markers are successfuly used in plant breeding for fast incorporation and fixation of some simple (qualitative) traits, and in seed production for genetic purity control. It seems that they might be means for faster and cheaper cultivar development in the future.

Summary: Four winter wheat cultivars and one breeding line different response sowed at to threee seeding rates (500, 750 and 1000 kernels per m2. Three cultivars, Sivka, Miljenka and Baranjska showed a slight yield increase with the increased seeding rate. At the same time yield of the cultivar Skopjanka decreased with the increased seeding rate. The breeding line L 1946174 had the highest yield at the rates was Skopjanjka, and this variety yielded significant by more with the seeding rate of 500 kernels per m2 than of 1000 kernels per m2. Reduction in plant number on the average of 9,9% was recorded between sowing and seedling emergency, and of 23% between seeding rate. The lowest reduction in plant number had cultivar Sivka at all seeding rates and developmental stages. Skopjanka had the highest plant reduction, 44%, at the seeding rate of 1000 kernels per m2 between seedling emergency and harvesting. These results indicate the nead for different seeding rates for different wheat genotypes.

Summary: Twelve inbred lines and their 24 crosses were analysed for variability in dry matter yield of the whole plant and the grained - ungrained part, as well as vriability in content of water, ash, crude proteins, crude fats, crude fibres and NFE, respetively with the aim to breed maize with high yield and digestibility of the ungrained part. The results have shown high variability between hybrids in dry metter yield of the whole plant, the ungrained part and crude fibres. Similar variability is recorded for protein content and crude fat content had low variability. In contrast, NFE and speially crude fibred had high variability. Regarding yield of the ungrained part and chemical composition, four out of 12 studied inbred lines have been selected as promising for further breeding. Three out of 24 studied hybrids should be tested for total dry matter and crude fibres digestibility.

Summary: Development of new cultivars of agricultural crops using classical breeding approach is long lasting, expensive and, regarding final success, unpredictable. Usully, it means developing a source breeding population selection of superior genotypes and testing their traits in the field and the laboratory. Due to the development of molecular genetics and tissue and cell culture new technologier have been developed which can be integrated into classical breeding schemes. The results obtained indicate the possibility of using somaclonal variability, protoplast fusion and gene tr nsfer for developing genetic variability, and haploid techniques for reaching homozygosity sooner than by the classical breeding approach. Molecular markers could be means for detecting genes for different traits at the DNA level independently of ecological and genetic interactions. Because of numerous scientific projects going on in the field of molecular biology one can expect development of even more practical and cheaper new technologies. By integrating these into classical breeding methods, breeding new cultivars should become more successful and cheaper.

Summary: This article reviews the basic genetic principles which have enabled, in the XX century, a quick improvement in plant breeding development of new cultivars and seed industry. In the course of cyclical eed renewal of cultivars accepted by producers and in the process of regular seed increase a special attention should be paid to the genetic structure of the cultivar, to its particular properties of flowering and fecundation and to the frequency of mutations as well as to microevolutionary processes in generations which follow crossing, selecting and official approval of each particular cultivar. The unvanted changes in genetic structure of a new cultivar and the diturbed microevolutionary processes in generations after official approval can be the reason for producers accepting a relatively small number of approved varieties and a relatively short use in production of the majority of accepted cultivars.

Summary: Results of GCA and SCA estimates were compared by using Griffing's methods 2 and 4 for diallel analyses (1956) for callus weight gain and four other traits in situ (grain yield at 14% moisture (dt/ha); grain moisture (%); rotted plants (%) and broken plants (%)). Diallels were obtained by crossing six maize inbred liner (A619, A632HtHt, Bc 14, Mo17Rfc, Ra232 and W64AHt) of different origin. Results of F-tests for combining ability indicate that GCA and SCA variances are higher when method 2 was used ratherthan method 4 for all the investigateed traits, except for GCA variance for grain yiels. Inbred lines rank in GCA effect depended on the method of estimating GCA for callus weight grain, grain yield at 14% moisture and number of rotted plants, while for grain moisture and number of baroken plants no significantdifference was noticed. For the traits in which estimation of SCA effects was possible by both methods, presence or absence of parent did not have any significant effect on estimates of SCA effects. Based on correlative coefficients (r) between GCA effects for the investigated traits for both methods callus weight gain was not significantly associated with anya of the investigated in situ traits. Of other correlations between in in situ traits only the correlation between the rotted and broken plants (r = 0.90**) for method 2 and between grain yield and broken plants (r = -0.79*) for method were significant. Based on our investigations, method 4 seems to be giving a more realistic estimate of combining abilities than mehod 2 partly due to its somewhat more severe criterion for estimating combining ability significance.

Correlation coefficient (r) and Spearman's range coefficient (rs) were calculated for these traits. Correlative association between calli weight gain of immature maize embryos and grain yield was found to be very poor (r=0.22=, whereas between calli weight gain of mature maize embryos and grain yiels it was moderate (r=0.44*). Association between inbred line ranges for calli weight gain of immature maize embryos and grain yield was found to be somewhat closer (rs=0.26) Association between ranges of calli weight gain of mature maize embryos and grain yield was almost complete (rs=0.94**). One can assume from the results of the investigations that grain yield of inbred lines based on calli weight gain (especially in mature maize embryos), could be estimated better by means of range coefficients for both traits. However, vor a more reliable estimate of this parameter, the investigations should be performed with a larger number of maize inbread lines involved.

Summary: Breeding new maize hybrids for higher yield resulted in narrowing genetic basis ofthe source breeding populations. Several autohors wrote about the potential dangers that genetic erosion might bring about, and suggested to broden the genetic basis of the present breeding populations and developoing new ones. Populations, open pollinated cultivars and inbred lines of domestic origin could be a sources of valuable genes for the latter purpose. But first, the domestic maize germplasm should be studied for its breeding value of various traits and for its heterotic pattern. In this work nine maize inbred lines of domestic origin were studied in hybrid combinnation with two testers (ISSS and Lancaster) each, at two locations during two years. Analysis were done for grain yield, 1000 kernels weight, ear lenght, ear night, flowering, resistance to stalk lodging, stalk breaking, and for sterile plants. The same lines and testers were also analysed for isoenzymes, for 13 enzymatic systems at 23 loci. eight inbred lines showed similar valuse of agronomic traits in gybrid combination with both testers as compared with the control hybrid, and the same level of isoenzymatic diferences in comparison to both testers. One line combined better with the ISSS than with the Lancaster tester. The test hybrids were worse than the controls mostly in resistance to stalk lodging, stalk breaking and fertility.

Summary: Genotypes of winter wheat have a specific and different grain yield structure. ?In the field experiment with five winter wheat genotypes - "Skopjanjka", "Sivka", "Miljenka", "Baranjka" i "L 1946-74", in three sowing densities - 500, 750 and 1000 kernels/m2, a specific way of yield realisation was noticed with the respect to components, participation in the effectuated grain yield at three sowing densities. The kernel weight and the production per ear were determined to have a maximum participation in the realisied yield for the "Skopjanka" and the "L 1946-74" genotypes, while the number of ears/m2 was established with an insignificant portion. The "Sivka" realised the achieved yield by the biggest portion of the number of ears /m2 then gy the kernel weight, whereas the production per ear was the component with a minimum participation. The specific yield structure of the "Miljenka" was the production per ear based on the great number of grains and the number of ears/m2 whereas the kernel weight had a minimum portion. The production per ear, the kernel weight and the number of ears/m2 are the yield components classified according to the participation in grain yield structure for the "Baranjska" genotype. The sowing density infruenced the yield components. The number of ears/m2 increased with the increase of the sowing density, while the production per ear decreased. The kernel weight is a yield component which kept almost the same value in all three densities. All the threee grain yield components at the sowing density of 750 kernels/m2 achieved the best mutual balance and it was the optimum sowing density for all genotypes examined in the xperiment except for the "Skopjanka".

Summary: Croatian variety lists of 1994 present a good foundation for future systematic work on breeding, introductions and seed industry. All in all in those lists 1910 varieties of field and vegetable crops are registrered, because of the unrevised variety lists of ex Yugoslavia, which were necessarily at the moment the base fr our variety lists. According to specialists evaluation today in Croatia only 20% of varieties, registered in offical Croatian lists, can be found in organized seed production and trade. Therefore, it seems that Croatian variety lists should be promptly revised. However, variety lists as the are, are in accord with the present breeding and seed industry infrastructure found in our county. Revision of variety lists should be done when we develop an adequate plant bareeding and seed industy infrastructure that is nesessary for good and regular revisions of variety list. The revisions should be regulated by law and should be in full agreeement with Regulations of Plant Varieties Registration (domestic and introduced) and with the Seed and Plant Variety Rights Laws. All mentioned laws will be effective, applicable and useful for our profession and state only in the case, if the laws will be revised step by step and in accort with realistic financial and professional possibilities of our country in administration, scientific, breeding and seed industy infrastructures as well as with the level of seed and plant production.

Summary: A station for seed research, attached to the Royal agricultural and forestry school at Križevci, was establisher 100 years ago and later it became a source of seed science in Croatia. Already at the beginning of this cenury, immediately after the rediscovery of Mendel's lows, Gustav Bohutinsky, at Križevci, was doing reserach on wheat applyng crosses, while Bogutinsky and Mandekić were investigating maize line hybrids almost at the same time as American researchers. Plant breeding and seed production were on the satisfactory level between the Wars. Intensification of wheat, maize and other crops production, their breeding and seed production showed a marked improvement in the time after the Wordl War II. The results reached in the field at the time were respectable. Wheat production and breeding in Croatia was compared to those in England .the average wheat yields per hectare on state farms in Croatia were as good as those in England. Production potential of new varieties was much less used on private farms than on state farms in Croatia which considerably decreased the average hectare yields as a whole. In the nineties, yields per unit of area start to be stagnant on the best state farms, in spite of a large nubmer of new varieties, indicating that choice of varieties at that time or varieties as itself were not adequate for the best producers. Limited use of producition potential of new varieties on private farms did not stimulate related research to ensure the proper choice of vrieties for optimal or suboptimal production conditionst. It was proved that a variety and certified seed are just one of the numerous production factors, while for successflul production all production factors have to be well balanced and brought to an adequate level. Disintegration of former Yugoslavia caused a lot of disorders in plant production, breeding and seed production in Croatia. Some producers and scientific institutions suffered, directly or indirectly, war damages, while the present conditions of neither war nor peace and the process of privatisation are weakening the financial and professional basis of bareeding institutions which may bring our plant breeding into very difficult position. Moreover, since our seed market, diminished by war situation, it will soon become even more open for foreign innovation on their seeds. Evidently, many efforts will be needed to keep together our technical staff in breeding and to continue with success our main breeding programmes. therefore it is now necessary to build up the infrastructure needed in the fields of plant breeding and seed industry as well as to establish functional low regulations which we, as an independent state, are bound to have. Seed industry should remain in the future the main financial source of plant breeding. Seed industry for national and international market can develop successfully only those, who, by importing foreign innovations of one crop, can offer for export domestic innovations of an other crop. Croatian breeding and seed production successfully withstand to many adversities trhough the past century and int will do the same in the future, if, along with short term programmes, we will take immediately enough care about long term ones.

Summary: The cultivars of faba bean in Yugoslavia is done on about 3000 ha. In the course of the last decades the size of the faba bean sown area s well as the seed production and quantity of green mass have fluctuated. This is the result of the expansion of the planted areas of common beans and soybean which are very much in demand in the market. The faba bean production had been traditional in many regions of Yugoslavia before World War II, mainly sown in small individual parcels and gardens. The seeds had been usually used for human food. In Yugoslavia there are large numbers of faba bean populations mainly of autochtohonous origin. They are polymorphic populations with large grains, a typical property of grain legumes of Mediterranean origin. The majority of them belong to the equina and major types, and some of them to the minor one. Because of the considerable variability of some important properities found within the autochthonous populations, they can be useful as initial material for creation of new varieties of faba bean.

Summary: Disintegration of the former Yugoslavia and the "neither war nor peace state" are weakening the financial base of plant breeding institutions of croatia. This, in combination with privatisation can very quickly destroy the skilled personnel of long-term programs can exist. Foreiign seed companies, supported by a well developed plant breeding structure of their countries, will present an increasing challenge for our active plant breeding programs in the domestic and foreign seed market. Analyses of official variety lists of Croatia show that domestic production of only a limited number of crops can be based predominantly on domestic cultivars. With most of the crops, however especially the vegetable ones, production will have to be based on a better organised and supervised introduction of foreign cultivars. In this connection necessary suggestions will be given. Immediate imprrovements in consistent application of regulatory laws and in procedure of official registration and introduction in production of domestic and foreign cultivars, as well as in control of seed production, quality and marketing are necessary. It is in the national interes that the irreparable erosion of genetic variability of crops should immediately be stopped. For our cultivars to be competitive greater attention should be given to their genetic stability and purity, to quality of their seed processing and packing, as well as to their description and identification. This will not be possible without an adequate financial support and qualified personnel in administration and in all scientific and professional institutions.

Summary: Lately, PVY has been the biggest threat to the flue-cured tobamlo production in Croatia. Thus, a breeding program with the aim of developing the flue-cured tobamlo hybrids resistant to pVY and amleptable to the tobamlo producers and cigarette manufactuurers was started at the University of Zagreb in collaboration with the Kombinat Kutjevo, in 1988. The source breeding populations with genetic variability for resistance to PVY, yield and cured leaf quality were formed by hybridization from parent possessing genetic basis for the traits of interest. Homozygous breeding lines were developed by growing two generations per year and by using a modified pedigree method. The best breeding lines in yield, quality and resistance to PVY were studied for combining ability. The test hybrids were evaluated at two locations, Kutjevo adn Virovitica in 1992 and in 1993. Four among the studied hybrids had high and stable yiels and cured leaf quality, and were resistant to PVY. Also, cigarette manufacturers consider them amleptable regarding smoking quality.

Summary: PVY is a disease which in some years has considerably affected the crops of Virginia tobaccos unresistant to the disease. The first improved populations have been developed by hybridization of the Virginia crops, originating from the USA and Canada (Mc Nair 944, K 326, Delgold) with genetic basis for high yield and good physical, chemical and smoking qualities of the cured leaf that can be easily affected by PVY, with the genotypes resistant to the disease (NE 744, Virginia D). The lines of F1 hybrid sorts are produced from these populations by imrpoving methods. Five hybrids (DH-XI, DH-XVI, DH-XVII, DH-XVIII and DH-XIX) resistant to PVY were selected during comparative field experiments with genotypes that have been or will be produced in the Republic of Croatia (DH-10, VaD, VJ-9, H-31, K-326. The hybrids have a better yield and have the genetic basis for good quality. The test results of technological, chemical and smoking characteristics of the mentioned genotypes are reported in this paper. The analyses were performed on cutters and tips for burning rate, water absorption, density, moisture content, nicotine, total sugar content, sucrose, fructose and glucose realtion (important for sampling - tasting qualities), total nitrogen, proteins, ash and smoke component - nicotine and tar, using standard materials for cigarette production. The analyses were carried out in Tobacco Factory Rovinj. The genotypes from the group of Virginia tobaccos noted as fillers hae been grown in the Republic of Croatia. The performed investigations have justifed the objective. Namely the tested technological and smoke tasting qualities as well as chemical composition and nicotine and tar yields in the smoke of cigarettes made of separate tobaccos minutely refer to the quality of genotypes that have to be selected and will be adequate for the production of blended cigarettes intended for the world market.

In a hibryd between two inbreed lines (P1=Ms'7, and P2=373) heritability of callus growtn was estimaned by measuring fresh weight of explants. About a hundred embryos for each parent (P1 and P2), filial generation (F1 and F2) and back crosses (B1 and B2) were weighed after being six data were transformed by logarithmic transformation. Heritability was estimated as follows: TU FORMULU UPISATI! Heritability estimates in the range of the very hight suggested, however, thar manner ot the callus growth was highly heritable. So that rapid gain from selestion for this trait should be possible. The experiment showei that winn used model, heritability of a trait in culture is possible, and we think about applying it in evalution of somatic em aogenesis heritability im maize tissue culture.

Summary: Quantitative evaluation of callus growth in virto was studied. General combining ability (SCA) and reciprocal differences of callus growth from immature embryo culture were evaluated. for this purpose a complete diallel was made of six lines of different origin (A619, A632HtHt, Bc14, Mo17Rfc, Ra232 and W64Ht). Significant differences were found in the growth of callus among inbared lines and f1 hybrids. The average fresh weight of callus among inbred lines varied from 0.1829 g (Ra232) to0.7236 g (W64Ht). CGA effects varied from -0.1408 (Mo17Rfc) to 0.1186 (W64Ht). The average fresh weight of callus among f1 hybrids varied from 0.1684 g (Mo17Rfc x Bc14) to 0.9712 g (A619 x W64Ht) in comparsion with the population mean (0.5024 g) from 33.5 to 193.3%. Hybrids with the highest SCA effects were A619 x W64Ht (0.0806), Bc14 x W64Ht (0.0969), A619 x ra232 (0.1605) and A632HtHt x Ra232 (0.3298). Significant reciprocal effects were also found. Summary: Twelve inbred lines and their 24 crosses were analysed for variability in dry matter yield of the whole plant and the grained - ungrained part, as well as variability in content of water, ash, crude proteins, crude fats, crude fibres and NFE, respectively with the aim to breed maize with high yield and digestibility of the ungrained part. The results have shown high variability between hybrids in dry matter yield of the whole plant, the ungrained part and crude fibres. Similar variability is recorded for inbred lines, too. The results of chemical analyses of hybrids and inbred lines have shown that crude protein content and crude fat content had low variability. In contrast, NFE and specially crude fibres had high variability. Regarding yield of the ungrainded part and chemical composition, for out of 12 studied inbred lines have been selected as promising for further breeding. Three out of 24 studied hybrids should be tested for total dry matter and crude fibres digestibility.

Summary: In Western Croatia, only early maturing soybean cultivars can be grown. Thus, in breeding work as well as in introduction such genotypes are interesting. In this study, 16 soybean genotypes, nine domestic cultivars and breeding lines and seven foreign introductions were grown in a RCBD with five replications in three environments. Six of these genotypes belonged to the 0 group and 10 to the I maturity group. Morphologica, agronomical and chemical data were recorded. Among the studied genotypes, nine had above average yield and below average yield coefficient of variation (CV). They might thus be considered as high yielders of good yield stability. Six of these were foreign introductions and three were of domestic origin. Two of the highest yielders belonged to the 0 maturity group. No relation was found either between the maturity group and yield or between t maturity group and yield.CV. In oil and protein content, the studied genotypes did not differ significantly. Six of the nine best ranked genotypes were not used in commercial production in Western Croatia prior to the experiment and could be recommended the production and all the nine cultivars might be valuable germplasm for breeding.

Summary: From 1970-1989, 30 FAO 100 and 78 FAO 200 maize hybrids were released by the former Yugoslav Committee for Releasing Varieties. Yield stability of the released hybrids was studied by using several methods. Yield improvement with time was found in both FAO groups of hybrids. Totat yield gain in the FAO 200 group was due to improved growing practices, and due to the breeding improvement, whereas the yield gain found in the FAO 100 group was due to the growing practices only. When the hybrids were grouped as suggested by Francis and Kannenberg (1978) most hybrids of the both groups were in me first and in the second stability groups . Two hybrids in the FAO group and one in the FAO 200 groups had a significantly higher bi value than 1 (Finlay and Wilkinson, 1963). Only one hybrid in each FAO group showed low stability expressed as qi 2 value (Shukla, 1973). Generally, values of the yield stability parameters bi and qi 2 did not change significantly despite the found yield gain during the studied 20-year period. These might indicate that the germplasm used for breeding the hybrids could be interesting as a source of genetic basis for adaptability.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to detect QTLs in maize exotic germplasm, for grain yield (YLD), plant height (PH), and days to pollen shed (DPS), to assess the association between the markers and the traits and to determine the relation between the degree of heterozygocity of marker alelles and the level of yield. Two half sib populations derived from L131f x Lnf1 (P1) and L131f x L219 (P2) selected from Croatian open pollinated varieties, were used. Of each population 169 F3 families were tested in the field experiments at two locations. The 20 highest and the 20 lowest yielding families of each population were used for QTL detection. As molecular markers isozymes, RFLPs, and Microsatellites were used. Marker - trait association was assessed by single factor and interval mapping analysis. P1 had lower average yield but had more polymorphic loci and revealed more QTLs than P2. In the two populations QTLs for YLD were found on chromosome 1, 6 and 10; for PH on chromosome 1, 3, 5, and 6; and for DPS on chromosome 1, 3, 6, 8 and 9. The populations had no QTL in common. Higher yielding subpopulations showed a higher degree of heterozygocity than the lower yielding subpopulations.

Summary: Lately, PVY has been the bigest threat to the flue cured tobacco production in Croatia. Thus, a breeding program with the aim of developing the flue-cured tobacco hybrids resistant to pVY and acceptable to the tobacco producers and cigarette manufacturers was started at the University of Zagreb in collaboration with the Kombinat Kutjevo in 1988. The source breeding populations with genetic variability for resistance to PVY, yield and cured quality were formed by hybridization from parents possessing genetic basis for the traits of interest. Homozygous breeding lines were developed by growing two generations per year and using a modified pedigree method. The best breeding lines in yield, quality and resistance to PVY were studied for combining ability. The test hybrids were evaluated at the two locations in 1992 and 1993. Four among the studied hybrids had hihg and stable yield and cured leaf quality, and were resistant to PVY. Also, cigarette manufacturers consider them acceptable regarding smoking quality.
