Summary: The first French international conference on wheat "DEFI
BLE 90" was organized and held on a very high lovel in Paris at the
beginning of the fall 1990. This paper presents the organization and the
course of the conference. First presented are brief outlines of the six
plenary papers in which wheat production was analysed from ecological,
commercial and political standpoints on national and international levels.
The work caried out in eight separate sections, from A to H, is also
briefly presented with special attention to section C "Wheat, production
and environment." The conclusions givencan be of interests to the members
of the Seedsmen society of Croatia. It has been clearly pointed out that
Wheat is not only variety and certified seed but obviously, much more than
that. IF we want to maintain and to improve what we have achieved in wheat
breeding and production in our country up to now, we should follow many
relevant procedures already applied in France.

Summary: This article reviews the basic genetic principlse which
have enabled, in the XX century, a quick improvement in plant breeding
development of new cultivars and seed industry. In the course of cyclical
seed renewal of cultivars accepted by producers and in the process of
regular seed increase a special attention should be paid to the genetic
structure of the cultivar, to its particular properties of flowering and
fecundation and to the frequency of mutations oa well as to
microevolutionary processes in generations after official approval can be
the reason for producers accepting a relatively small number of approved
varieties nad a relatively short use in production of the majority of
accepted cultivars.

Summary: Influence of empty spaces on their border plants of two
soybean cultivars was studied in the Experimental field of Faculty of
Agricultural Sciences, Zagreb in 1967, 1969 i 1970. The spaces were 0,1,
0,15, 0,2, 0,25 and 0,3 m. Yield and yield components of the border plants
form latter emphy spaces were compared with the plants from the usual plant
spacing of 0,05 m. Increased space gave generally border plants with
increased yield. For some traits a significant cultivar x space interaction
was found. The results varied with season.

Summary: Compared with convential applications, film-coating
chemicals onto seeds made improvements in operating safety, seed-to-seed
distribution of chemicals and handling at drilling. However, where
broad-spectrum fungicides were compared in conventional and coated
applications, only one of the polymer coats, that the one is of the lowest
strength tested, with improved phisical caracteristics gave consistently
good control of both seed and folicar pathogens. Coating was also the only
practical method of applying an effectively high dose of insecticide,
fungicide treatment to poa seeds which contributed to substantial yield
benefits.

Summary: The importance of bees in plant breeding and seed
production has been known and utilized for a long time. Modern seed
production of numerous cross-pollinating and even self-polinating species
requires the presence of bees during pollination and seed setting. The
solution of this problem is very well organized in European and American
seed production while in our country it is at the very begining. The
presence of bees, particulary the "trained" ones and other insects during
pollination in cereal, grain legume, oil, fodder, vegetable, florist and
drug seed crops guarantees better pollination, higher yield and better
quality seed as well as higher incume in seed production.

Summary: The most frequent type of environment pollution in
agricultural areas is that by nitrogen. Nitrogen is prone to washing out,
due to weak connection to colloidal soil particles, and in particular the
nitrate form pollutes ground water and watercourses. The intention of the
two year trial (1991. and 1992.) was to determine the influence of detailed
tile drainage (16 different combinations) on nitrogen concentration in
water evacuated from soil in production areas. The soil was
hydroameliorated pseudogley-gley. The crop in the first year was maize, and
in the second year oats. In the first year the soil was fertilized wizh zhe
total quantity of nitrogen of 202 kg/ha, and in the second year 50 kg/ha.

Summary: Plant breeding is a complex process. A significant part of
that process is entailed in field experiments and data analyses whose
results and correct interpretation are the last steps in choosing new
cultivars. In theoriy, the plot size is in reverse proportion to the
experimental error, and iit depends on the soil heterogenity. It is
essential to estimate its optimal size as the minimum area that represents
a cultivar within the experiment on condition that the experimental error
is not significantly increased. With that aim 7 experiments were carried
out by using randomized complete-block design in 6 replications throught 3
independent years at 2 locations with approx. 60 hybrid maize (Zea mays L.)
of different maturity groups.

Summary: With the aim of investigating the influendce of different
biostimulators on economically important traits of primrose (primula
accaulis L.), a threefactorial experiment was carried out by using
randomized complete block design in three replications. Statistical data
analysis showed significant effects of Agrispnon (1%) and Agrovit (5g), the
same as the combination of Agrispon (1%) with Agrovit (2g and 5g) on the
flower diameter. Agrispon (1%) and Agrovit (5g) had significant influences
on the number of flowers but in their combination no significant influences
on the number of flowers but in their combination no significant effects
were proved. Agrispon and Agrovit showed the positive effects on the colour
of flowers thus, they did not effict the colour of leaves, except in the
combinations with both biostimulators. Agrispon and Agrovit had the
positive or the same influences on the traits of primroses like the common
way of fertilization (Substral) in the intensive production.

Summary: Croatian variety lists of 1994 present a good foundation
for future systematic work on breeding, introductions and seed industry.
All in all in those lists 1910 variesies of field and vegetable crops are
registered, because of the unrevised variety lists of ex Yugoslavia, which
were necessarily at the moment the base for our variety lists. According to
specialists evaluation today in Croatia only 20% of varieties, registrated
in official Croatian lists, can be found in in organized seed production
and trade. Therefore, it seems that Croatian variety lists should be
promptly revised. However, variety lists as they are, are in accord with
the present breeding and seed industry infrastructure found in our country.
Revision of variety lists should be done when we develop an adequate plant
breednig and seed industry infrastructure thet is necessary for good and
regular revisions of variety lists.

Summary: Barley, one of the oldest field crops, is produced for
various purposes within which we have to emphasize the production for
malting industry. Concerning the morphological point of view, barley can be
two-row and six-row, winter of spring type. Due to breeding, both types of
barley (winter and spring) can be used for malt production. However, winter
barley always has significantly higher and more stable yields than spring
barley. The Republic of Croatia has all the possibilities (soil, clime,
equipment, skiled stuff and varieties) for the production and processing of
malting barley of high quality. Due to the war, the production of barley,
just like the production of all other field crops is significantly reduced
but there are conditions to achieve and even exceed the pre-war production.
The choice of variety, quantities of seed needed by malting industry,
financial possibilities and return have to be adjusted according to the
purpose of the production.

Summary: The comparative investigations into the anatomical
structure of the Vigna sesquipedalis (L.) Fruwirth pod pericarp were
carried out on the "Liana" and "Linea" cultivars. The statistical analyses
proved that the "Liana" cultivar demonstrated a significantly thicker
pericarp compared to cv. "Linea" in the first harvest. Both cultivars
pericarp were thicker at the pod basis, the "Linea" being thicker in the
middle as well, in the second harvest. In both cultivars reserched and in
both harvests the pericarp was noticed to be thickest at the basis, thinner
in the middle and thinnest at the top of the pod. The results of the
investigated anatomical characteristics of the pod pericarp contribute to
the knowledge of determining optimal stages for the pod's techological
maturity of the Vigna sesquipedalis (L.) Fruwirth.

Summary: The cultivation of faba bean in Yugoslavia is done on about
3000 ha. In the course of the last decades the size of the the faba bean
sown area as well as the seed production and quantity of green mass have
fluctuated. This is the result of the expansion of the planted areas of
common beans and soybean which are very much in demand in the market. The
faba bean production had been traditional in many regions of Yugoslavia
before World War II, mainly sown in small individual parcels and gardens.
The seeds had been usually used for human food. In Yugolsavia there are
large numbers of faba bean populations mainly of autochthonous origin. The
majority of them belong to the equina and major types, and some of them to
the minor one. Because of the considerable variability of some important
properties found withn the autochthonous populations, they can be useful as
initial material for creation of new varieties of faba bean.

Summary: Disintegration of the former Yugoslavia and the "neither
war nor peace state" are weakening the financial base of plant breeding
institutions of Croatia. This, in combination with privatisation can very
quickly destroy the skilled personnel of long-term plant breeding programs
without which no successful private nor state short-term programs can
exist. Foreign seed companies, supported by a well developed plant breeding
structure of their countries, will present an increasing challenge for our
active plant breeding programs in the domestic and foreign seed market.
Analyses of official variety lists of Croatia show that domestic production
of only a limited number of crops can be based predominantly on domestic
cultivars.

Summary: Seed production in Croatia has been developing as a natural
sequel to plant genetics and plant improvement. Thus, the first Station for
Seed Testing, attached to the Royal Agricultral and Forestry School at
Križevci, was established in 1893. It was a nucleus of scientific work on
seed production as well as for breeding of new cultivars of agricultural
plants. Fruitful scientific work of many generations has been published in
various periodicals in our country and abroad. The International scientific
symposium, held at Stubičke Toplice, under the auspices of dr. Franjo
Tuđman, President of the Republic of Croatia, Dec. 6-11. 1993. marked this
continous work 100 years later.

Summary: Croatian variety of lists of 1994 present a good fundation
for future systematic work on breeding, introductions and seed industry.
All in all in those lists 1910 varieties of field and vegetable crops are
registered, because of thje unrevised variety lists of ex Yugoslavia, which
were necessarily at the moment the base for our variety lists. According to
specialists evaluation today in Croatia only 20% of varieties, registred in
official Croatian lists, can be found in organized seed production and
trade. Therefofe, it seems, that Croatian variety lists should be done when
we develop an adequate plant breeding and seed industry infrastructure that
is necessary for good and regular revisions of variety lists. The revisions
should be regulated by law and should be in full agreement with Regulations
of Plant Varieties and Inntroductions Registration and with the Seed and
Plant Variety Rights Laws.

Summary: Fast, cheap and precise cultivar identification is becoming
more and more important for recognizing newly created cultivars as well as
in seed production. Molecular genetic markers can do that, which has alredy
been shown in the case of many agricultural plants. Most frequently used
are isoenzymatic, RFLP and RAPD markers. According to the regulations of
the UPOV dealing with Plant Breeders Rights the new cultivar qualities
required are: distinctness, homogeneity and stability. The difference must
be proved morphologically and/or physiologically. The paper gives
advantages and disadvantages of molecular genetic markers for proving
distinctness of a newly created cultivar.

Summary: The Croatian Plant Gene Bank (HBBG) as a national project
of theMinistry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Agriculture
and Forestry was established in 1991. Its establishment, mandate,
organization and scientific concept resulted from long-time efforts of
Croatian scientistics working on genetics, plant breeding and seed
production as well as from the need to preserve living genetic resources
for the present and future times. Collection, preservation, description,
protection and use of genetic resources of cultivated and wild plants
probably deserve a status of a special scientific branch of ecology. As in
Croatia old cultivars have been constantly exchanged with new ones, it is
necesary to preserve old genetic resources for our science and culture as
they are living documents of our history and evolution. The collected
biological, geographical, meteorological, cultural and bibliographical
information is at the disposal of all users intersted. Collaborating with
international organizations such as FAO and IPGRI, the Croatian Plant Genes
Bank is included in the world network of plant genes banks.

Summary: In theorty, the plot size is in reverse proportion to the
experimental error, and it depends on the soil heterogenety. It is
essential to estimate its optimum size as the minimum area that represents
a genotype within the experiment on condition that the experimental error
is not significantly increased. With that aim 7 experiments with approx.60
maize hybrids of different maturity groups (4 of earlier and 3 of later
groups) were carried out by using randomized complete-block design in 6
replications throughout 3 independent years at 2 locations. In the
statistical analysis the oversized plot (8 rows x 6m) facilited the
artifical decrease of the plot size by 1 row each time.

Summary: Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) is adiecious plant, where only
females give a yield. In beer industry only two categories are respected:
aromatic and bitter. We found that the most succesfull methods in breeding
of hop for all mentioned characteristics and adaptation to our conditions
are: multiple crossing with european germplasm, crossing of autotetraplodid
female european parent with diploid multiple cross(which means american
with european germplasm), and crossing of autotetraploid male multiple
cross with diploid european parent.
