Summary: THE CROATIAN BANK OF PLANT GENES 1. SUMMARY The scientific project entitled the Croatian Bank of Plant Genes includes founding an independent scientific institution in Croatia within the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Zagreb working according to the positive legislation of the Republic of Croatia and IBPGR. This project was founded by the Croatian government in 1993 on the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the first plant examination station in Krizevci. An international scientific symposium was held in Stubicke Toplice under the sponsorship of the Croatian President Dr Franjo Tudjman on 6-11 December 1993. The 105 authors and co-authors presented 70 papers to mark century of seed breeding in Croatia. The papers comprised gathering of the autochthonous populations, ecotypes and cultivares created by a plant breeding process at home or by introduction from abroad. The gathered and created genetic sources of the farming, vegetable, fodder, aromatic, medicinal, decorative, and the floristic cultures are the base of genetic investigations, the creation of own cultures, and the production of seeds and sowing substance in Croatia. The contract between FAO and the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, which also named the CBPG project as a priority program, and the contract between Croatia and IBPGR have included the Croatian Bank of Plant Genes (CBPG) into the international exchange of germplasm with other international and national banks of plant genes (ICARDA, ECPC, UNDP and etc.). Such banks of plant genes have been active in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Hungary, Poland, Czech and Slovak republics, Germany, USA, the former USSR, Japan, etc. Since the next century will be characterised by a fast development of plant genetics, it is necessary to secure a more favourable position in using the country's own and newly created world genetic sources in creating cultivares (sorts and hybrids). The Croatian genetic sources (the Mediterranean and the Continental regions) make up an important and recognisable system for the European and world banks of plant genes where some of our most important sources of genetic variability are preserved. Those seeds need to be returned to the Croatian Bank of Plant Seeds as soon as possible to be at the disposal of the Croatian scientists (geneticists, plant breeders and the seed industry).

Keywords: the Croatian Bank of Plant Genes (CBPG), seed, cultivar, population, ecotype, inventory, collection, identification, expedition, reproduction, characterisation, evaluation, descriptor, storing, genetic variability, genetic purity.

Research goals: AIMS Scientific investigations within the national project entitled the CROATIAN BANK OF PLANT GENES (hereafter CBPG), no. 4-01-056, was carried out on farming, fodder, vegetable and other cultures traditionally grown in Croatia. The Croatian Bank of Plant Genes serves as a source of the germmplasm in the area of plant genetics, plant breeding and seed industry. The home-grown germplasm collected and partly studied at the Department of Plant Breeding, Genetics and Biometrics for seven decades already also serves for recognisable exchange of plant genes with other national plant gene banks. Also worth preserving are the home sources of the genetic resistance to diseases, pests, drought, quality, adaptability and stability and the alike. Collecting, developing, studying and using germplasm for the basic investigations according to the International Board for Plant Genetics Resources (hereafter IBPGR) methodology, we set up a data base which facilitates search by the geneticists and plant breeders, as well as the choice of the aimed germplasm for the creation of a new genetic variability. The 32 papers published within this project study the home- and foreign-grown germplasm that were found useful for the basic research on corn, wheat, barley, oat, soya, green bean, and chick pea. Several more articles are being prepared on the topics. Using domestic and foreign sources of germplasm this project produced the following newly-created Croatian cultivares recognised by the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in 1993: - two types of barley: TOMISLAV and TVRTKO - two types of oat: VESNA and ŽELJKA - two types of lupine: MAKSIMIRKA and ZRINKA - two types of soya: HRVATICA and BUGA - one types of green peas: ŠAMPION More new genotypes of barley, tobacco, wheat and other cultures are in the process of being recognised, whose completion is expected shortly. All collected seed samples of the autochthonous populations, ecotypes and the recognised old cultivares, as well as the foreign cultivares and the sources of genetic resistance and variability have been included into the registry lists of each sample according to species. All investigations and projects within plant genetics, plant breeding and seed industry carried out in the current institutes are directly connected with the CBPG either in the sense of utilising it, or for storing there the seed samples of different germplasm.
