Summary: Genetic variation at 19 enzyme loci of Picea omorika (Panč.) Purk. from the natural population (Mountain Stolac, Bosnia) and from a cultivated Finnish population was investigated. The average expected heterozygosities over 19 loci were 0.13 and 0.15 in the two populations, which is within the frame of results observed in other conifers. The observed amount of genetic variation is high considering the lack of morphological variation and small natural population.

Summary: The karyotype analysis was performed using the Feulgen squash method on slides made from the female gametophyte (= macrogametophyte, endosperm tissue in development) of a Norway spruce Picea abies (L.) Karst. tree growing at the Botanical Garden of the University of Graz. 22 images of well spread metaphase-plates of the haploid tissue were saved using image analysis equipment consisting of a video camera mounted on a light microscope and connected to the central computer. The absolute arm lengths of all chromosomes (n=12) were measured directly on the computer image by image-analysis software. The morphometric values were calculated after transferring the data to the Excel spreadsheet, and statistically analyzed. From the base, an idiogram was developed, and the chromosomes were numbered according to the relative length and morphology. Chromosomes I, IV and VIII are m-types, with median centromeres, while the chromosomes II, III, V, VI, VII, IX, X, XI and XII have the centromere in the median-submedian region. Two chromosomes (II and V) have secondary constrictions on the long arm and one chromosome (IX) on the short arm. The secondary constriction of the chromosome II is more terminal than the secondary constrictions of chromosomes V and IX. The use of digital image analysis technique allowed for fast selection of metaphase cells, storage of images on a harddisk and rapidly provided measurement for statistical analysis.

Summary: Among 1-year Quercus robur L. seedlings, several plants were selected, differing from others in the population by their variegated leaves. Such plants could be useful in arboriculture, if we could fix the appearance of variegated leaves and solve the problems of vegetative propagation. This paper discusses the cytoplasmic inheritance of leaf variegation and describes the methods of grafting. Grafting and callusing of grafts in a mixture of sawdust and moss enables the production of an average of 32% firmly joined grafts at the end of the first growing season.

Summary: Proclaimed a National Park on November 1 1983, the Brijuni archipelago is today divided in the residential part and the areas open to public. In the past two hundred years various exotic woody plants were planted mainly in three islands: Veli Brijun, Mali Brijun and Vanga. The Arboretum, which is situated on the Veli Brijun, was established in 1987. The paper presents the data on the number of idenified woody plants, grown in gardens or of exotic origin, growing successfully on the three islands, including the areas open to public, the residential areas, the nursery and the Arboretum.

Summary: Faculty of Forestry of the University of Zagreb has initiated the development of the Arboretum Lisičine and is working on the establishment of the Arboretum Brijuni. The two arboreta are at present the only major facilities of the kind in Croatia, as the 490-year old Arboretum Trsteno has been destroyed in the war at the end of 1991. For the past 20 years, in the nurseries of these arboreta and the Croatian Forests Company, as well as at the Faculty of Forestry, the work on obtaining new cultivars has been underway; particularly interesting are: Pinus sylvestris 'Conica', Juniperus communis 'Lela', Picea pungens 'Kutjevo', Picea sitchensis 'Hajderovac', Fagus sylvatica 'Papuk', and possible cultivars of variegated oaks.

    Held: from 08/22/95 to 08/31/95
Summary: Different methods of cytogenetical bioindication were applied to Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) chromosomes. Most valuable informations were obtained when the endospermal tissue in development was used. Differences in the morphology of chromosomes in cells of the root tip meristem tissue and the endesperm tissue in development were discussed. Using digital image analysis equipment it was possible to analyse a great number of data, and to reconstruct the 3-D model of the interphase nuclei.

    Held: from 08/06/95 to 08/12/95
Summary: The karyotype analysis of a single Picea omorika (PANč.) PURK. tree was completed using female gametophyte tissue. Most chromosomes (n=12) were metacentric, but chromosomes IX and XII were submetacentric. The positions of the centromeres of chromosomes X and XI were close to submetacentric, but were classified as metacentric. Some authors, however, could have considered the smallest four chromosomes as submetacentric. This variance among authors in describing karyotypes is problematic when comparisons are made among studies. Based on a review of literature on karyotype analyses of gymnosperms, a standardization for gymnosperm karyotypes is presented. Recommendations for standardization are given including: karyotype analyses using metaphase or anaphase cells, presentations of numerical karyotypes in relative length, definitions of centromere position, karyotype graphs, and reliability of position and frequency of secondary constrictions.

Summary: Usin digital image analysis it was possible to construct the karyotype of the Norway spruce tree (Pice abies (L.) Karst. Slide were made using different cytological techniques, which made possible to reveal different details on the chromosomes for their identification.
Keywords: Picea abies (L.) Karst., karyotype, chromosome banding, digital image analysis

Summary: Giemsa C-banding method was applied on chromosomes in the female gametophyte tissue of Norway spruce (Picea abies /L./ Karst.). A karyogram of one single tree growing in the Botanical Garden of the University of Graz, Austria, was made by using an image analysis system. All chromosomes (n=12) showed pericentric C-bands. Chromosomes II, V and IX possessed intercalary C-bands located at secondary constrictions. Telomeric C-bands appeared in chromosomes II and III on both arms. Stickiness between nonhomologous chromosomes was observed and discussed in the paper.
Keywords: Chromosomes, Giemsa C-banding method, macrogametophyte, stickiness, karyotype, image analysis, Picea abies (L.) Karst.
Other: Rad je prihvaćen za tisak u časopisu Silvae Genetica, nakon provedene međunarodne recenzije dvaju recenzenata. Očekuje se tisak krajem 1995. godine.
