Summary: Through visits (in the USA, Ireland, Hungary, Germany, France, Netherlands and Austria) to university, scientific and research institutions, arboreta, private and state nurseries that produce ornamental dendroflora for urban forestry, valuable cutting and seed material has been collected that is unavailable in Croatian horticultural nurseries. 250 various taxons and cultivars have been obtained and propagated to establish plots of mother plants at horticultural nurseries in Zagreb, Kutjevo, the island of Brijuni, Budrovci and Dubrovnik. Work on the production of those cultivars has been initiated applying modern methods of propagation. Half-sib progeny of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana (Murr.) Parl. has been produced. Four plants were selected as new cultivar candidates for further testing. One selected Thuja orientalis L. was named 'Shagi', as a new cultivar and planted at the Arboretum Brijuni, as well as in nurseries "Hajderovac" in Kutjevo and "C. Esveld" in Boskoop, Netherlands. Three new Oriental arborvitae genotypes were selected, propagated and planted at the Arboretum Brijuni as cultivar candidates. One of those is selected as a new cultivar and named Thuja orientalis L. 'Croata'. Following selection in Croatian nurseries of pedunculate and sessile oaks with variable leaf and habit (dwarf) morphology, some fifty plants are now being grown at the Department of Forest Genetics and Dendrology, University of Zagreb, as new cultivar candidates. At the Arboretum Brijuni 25 plots have been planted with indigenous and allochthonous woody taxons.

Research goals: Through dendrological and genetic research of various wooden species produce new and own Croatian coniferous and broad-leaved cultivars. In nurseries with ornamental dendroflora establish plots of mother trees with identified taxons and cultivars, and introduce modern methods of their propagation and production. Establish new arboreta in Croatia and introduce new taxons to the existing arboretums. Publish research papers on problems in the production of new cultivars. Publish popular scientific booklets with detailed descriptions of morphological characteristics of available wooden cultivars and taxons for urban forestry and arboriculture purposes and of their biological and ecological features important for the envrionment.
