Summary: The paper presents a part of the vibrations level research results obtained by measurements at the STIHL 044 AVEQ motor chain handles. All the measurements were carried out in accordance with ISO 7505. Some parameters that are not precisely defined in ISO 7505 were varied during the measurements in order to study their influence on the vibrations level, i.e. the repeatability of measurements carried out according to ISO 7505 recommendations. The length of the chain guide and chain strain were varied and operators were taking turns at the motor chain saw. The results of measurement show that the operator and the length of the chain guide influence the vibrations level substantially. In other words, it means that ISO 7505 does not provide for the repeatability of measurements.

Summary: Compared to other fuels, petrol and petroleum products offer quite a number of advantages. It is particuraly obvious in the production of heat energy, so that now days of the steam power plants have completely switched to those fuels, although sometimes for no objective reason. Problems with prices and supply have now forced many petrol fueled steam power plants to reconsider the return to the original fuels. However, this time the preparations have to be taken much more seriously.

Summary: The aim of this article was to establish some energy and economic features of the gantry crane with carrying capacity 10 t, operating at the log storage of Lučice sawmill. The investigation covered the consumption of active and reactive electric energy, utilization of installed electric motors, electric power of individual gantry crane mechanisms depending on the transported load mass and driving speed, and costs of a gantry crane working hour. It has been established that the energy consumption of gantry crane participates with only 3,8 % in the total sawmill consumption of electric energy. The energy costs also account for a small part of the costs of a gantry crane working hour. It has been evidenced that the crane operator can influence energy consumption. It has been established that the utilization of the installed power is 0.25 and only the electrical power of the lifting mechanism depends on the transported load mass. It is indicated that better work organisation with a larger gantry crane output can decrease energy consumption and costs per working hour.

Summary: This paper presents Hamm's approximate method for determination the consumed electric energy of three-phase asynchronous induction electricmotors. The method gives brief and enough exact information for making decision of advisable technical factors in working conditions. The base of this approximate method is dependence of power factor cos FI upon electricmotor load. Hamm has done for three characteristic values of power factor (cos FI = 0,7; cos FI = 0,8; cos FI = 0,9) the diagram, based on empiric data, for determination of electric power on the base of measured current. The method is presented with practical example of determination specific consumed electric energy of pneumatic and mechanical conveyor. Results of research have confirmed that mechanical conveyor is more power favourable than pneumatic conveyor.

Summary: Strain force is a very important parameter of the general efficiency of the band saw. In order to point out the importance of the strain force the paper presents research results of its influence on the machine's idling power. As independent variables two parameters have been chosen: the strain force and the cutting speed. References mention a wide range (from 30 to 120 MPa) of optimum strain force values. The choice of the optimum strain force value will therefore provide for the higher efficiency of the band saw. For the purpose of the research described in this paper the strain force was measured by the approximative method of measurement. The power of the machine's own resistances was measured at various strain forces. At each level of the strain force the cutting speed has been varied by changing the rotation frequency of the electromotor. The influence of the electromotor rotation frequency on the machine's idling power is linear and expected, but the influence of the strain force cannot be called linear, which is an unexpected result.

Summary: The protection of the work environment from emitted noise, vibrations, gases and dust is nowdays the production process designers' main concern. This problem is gradually gaining adequate attention in Croatia, too. The work environment protection problems are particularly emphasized in the woodworking industry. At the Faculty of Forestry in Zagreb noise and vibration protection is systematically studied for more than 20 years now. The paper presents the results of routine measurements regularly carried out at woodworking plants by researchers of the Department for Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Forestry, University of Zagreb. The paper presents the results of the measured noise levels emitted by two-spindle moulders. Because of the high level of the emitted noise, the moulders were placed in a separate room. But, the small room volume and the proximity of the reflecting surfaces resulted in a noise level significantly above the noise level limits. The measurements covered all positions of the operators. According to the results of the measurements the operators should (depending on the position) not be exposed more than 1/4 to 1 hour without adequate personal protection. In order to optimize the personal protection the octave band analysis was carried out.

Summary: The paper presents the investigation results of woodworking by milling. The experimental part has been carried out on multispindle milling machines commonly used for wood processing by chip removing in the woodworking industry. The two principles acknowledged were fully respected; (1) the milling tools do not change their rotational frequency, nor their position during milling and (2) the working piece moves at a constant cutting speed at a single pass. The cutting speeds werw therefore measured at each pass and the establishment of complex relationships refers to their regression analysis, for four various milling depths.

Summary: The general milling efficiency is, on the one hand, determining the woodworking optimum, and on the other hand it is proportionate to the feed speed and specific width of the work piece. The specific cutting resistances for beech are by about 55 % higher from those determined for fir at the approximatively same feed speeds. The specific cutting resistance and the average chip depths show approximatively the same corelation for fir, but not for beech. The asymptotic value of the specific cutting resistance is higher for beech than for fir. At milling fir as the cutting depth decreases, the specific cutting resistance becomes lower with the increase of the chip depth, which is not the case when milling beech.

Summary: The lateral movement of the band saw blade reduces both the quality of the saw surfaces, and the material yield. At the same time it requires higher energy standards. The lateral movement of the band saw blade and the machine's own resistances are significantly influenced by the strain force of the blade. Both, the references and the band saw producers, list a rather wide range of strain force values. In order to determine the optimum strain force value for the given machine-tool system, a very comprehensive research work was done at the Faculty of Forestry, University of Zagreb. The strain force and the rotation frequency of the driving wheel were chosen as independent variables. The lateral displacement value of the band saw blade was measured by inductive transducer. The machine's own resistances power was measured by electric measuring instruments. The research yielded very interesting results.

Summary: It is a well known fact that the vibration level of the motor chain saws is influenced by a large number of parameters. To provide for repeatability and reproducibilty of the vibration level measurements, the international standards seek to give a clear definition of the measurement procedure for measuring vibrations on the motor chain saw handles. Unfortunately, the measurements of the viration levels made in various laboratiries on the same motor chain saw showed substantially different results. In inevitably leads to the conclusion that the measurement procedure does not control all the significant parameters influencing the vibration level of the motor chain saws. It is therefore necessary to do further research work into the quantification of the factors of influence yet not mentioned by the international standards. Bearing this in mind, a research work on motor chain saw vibration levels was done at the Faculty of Forestry, University of Zagreb, Croatia.

Summary: The Croatian forest products most commonly produced are commercial wood in the form of timber and logs for sawmills and other wood industries and industrial wood for chip board, etc. as well as fuelwood including a little percent of chips for energy purposes. Potential raw material sources for fuel wood are bark, by-products and wood residues from the forest industry; raw material directly from forest operations and other types of raw material originating from wood. The history of forest chip production in Croatia is a good illustration of the conflicting issues of timber, energy and economy. After ten years of trying to organize production of secondary energy, we have now entered a new decade in which the nature of energy is being redefined. As to the forests in the temperate zone of Croatia, research has been carried out on the residues of early and later thinnings, selective cuts, final cuts, clear cuts, seed-tree cuts, shelter tree cuts, etc. The following main fields of chips application are referred to: conventional firewood for residential heating; fuelwood for district heating plants and other major heat suppliers; raw material for different kinds of board or pulp chip for industry.
