Summary: The distribution, histological changes, and influence
on5-nucleotidase and glucose-5-phosphatase activity wereinvestigated in the
liver and kidney of carp (Cyprinus carpio L.)treated with the sublethal
concetration of cadmium (0,240 mg/L)in water during 30 days. A
significantly increased cincentrationof cadmium was found in the liver and
kidney of cadmium-treatedfish. in them the connective tissue thickness of
blood vesselsand sinusoidal walls in the liver and the epithelial
cellvacuolization in the kidney were observed. A decrease of5-nucleotidase
and glucose-6-phosphatase activity was observed inthe liver and kidney of
cadmium-treated fish. The presentinvestigation points out that
histochemical changesmanifest themselves earlier than histological ones in
the liverand kidney of cadmium-treated fish.

Summary: It was analysed 178 honey samples collected from spring
1990 till the end of the 1992 in the region of north-west Croatia. The main
flora in this area are natural meadows, lime, locust-tree and oak forests,
but the most part is agricultural land under cultivated plants (oil rape,
clover, corn, cereals), orchards and vineyards. From the total analysed 85
samples of locust-tree honey, 31 was find as monofloral (36,5 %). Standards
for lime from the total 73 samples 22 samples satisfied (30%) and 20% of
the honeys from the chestnut tree. Croatia, according to Šimić (1980) can
produce more than 100 types of monofloral honeys, on the market prevail
five basic types.

Summary: Early queen production is the main goal of all beekeepers
and queen producers. It is necesary for development of colonies to full
strength before main flow or pollination. For all Eurpe is useful to
produce first queens in second half of April. The first produced queens in
Europe are in June, in continental parts of Croatia in second half of May,
while in Dalmatia, especialy south, is possible to produce queens in April.
Specific geoclimate characteristics of Croata can be used for early queen
production for own needs, as well as for needs of Europe. Use of natural
resources in Republic of Croatia is the best way to establish conections
with european beekeeping.

Summary: Agriculturists choose any of plan which suits to local
climate and market. On the fields in Europe, had produced to much some
crops, specially cereals. In the endeavouring decrease of cereals product,
was suggested alternative production. Most of then was product rich with
proteins or oil. For the most of this non-cereal crops, organized
pollination by bees is very important. Consciousness about pollinations had
been developed after the first organized pollination by bees in 1910.
Today's is defining primary principle of pollination tehnology by
bees:-corrects bee-hive dispositons, necessarey number of bee-colony, by
training bees and time of pollination implementing. By putting agriculture
on a market course, we expect increasing area under the non-cereal plants
and increasing requirements for bees.

Summary: Beekeeping in the Republic of Croatia has a long tradition.
Our magazine "Pcela" has 114 years of continuous Publishing. The last ten
years the number of beekeepers has oscillated between 10 - 12 thousand, and
in their possession the number of beecolonies oscillated between 100 - 120
thousand. The majority of commercial beekeepers and beecolonies is situated
in the continental part of country. These colonies start their spring
development in February but can be stopped by colder and wet weather in the
next month. Nevertheless, in April we have the first natural swarms.
The first queens are produced in the middle of May on the continental area,
but on the Islands they can be produced by the end of April.
The dominant bee product is honey, but our beekeepers produce significant
quantities of wax, pollen, propolis, bee-venom, queens, swarms and some
royal jelly.

Summary: Besides sunflower, oilseed rape is the most important oil
plant in Croatia. Before the war, oilseed rape was grown on as many as
29,000 ha while today there are only 12 - 15,000 ha under this crop. Oil
demand could be satisfied by planting major oil plants on 120,000 - 130,000
ha, that is, on less than 10% of arable areas of Croatia, which is
considered as optimal for a modern plant production system. Respecting the
demand for soybean grits, half of these areas should be under soybean while
sunflower and oil rape should be grown on the other half.
There are 60,000 beehives in Croatia, only 25% of which are kept in movable
hives. Of the total number of bee colonies in Croatia, one third is in the
regions unsuitable for oil rape planting (Dalmatia). The remaining two
thirds of colonies, barely sufficient for pollination of the existing areas
under oil rape, are not all of them engaged on oil rape because of
simultaneous flowering of other honey plants. If areas under oil rape are
expanded to the recommended 30,000 - 40,000 ha, and the negative trend in
bee-keeping is continued, lack of pollinators on planted areas will be felt
very soon.

Summary: Kangaroo Island, located off the southern of South
Australia, has been home to an isolated reserve of an ecotype of Apis
mellifera ligustica for 110 years. While the origin of the initial Italian
bees imported is still debated by scientists and historians, hybridisation
after inception of the sanctuary in 1885 seems unlikely. The isolation of
the island and a recent proclamation have helped to preserve a relatively
disease free population. Limitations exist within the ecotype with regard
to brood survival, reduced sex alleles and an inconsistent colour line,
however these factors can be largely overcome through careful selection of
queen mother colonies by queen breeders, and outcrossing with feral stock
throught the island to utilise the available variation in the population.

Summary: Activities of 137 Cs and 40 K were measured by
gamma-spectrometry method in honey samples collected each year from 1990 to
1994 from northern and nirth-western parts of the Republic of Croatia
territory. Activities of 137 Cs in honey decrease continuously during this
period, supporting previously observed indications that caesium transfer
from soil to plants is the temporally variable parameter. In cases of
meadow-flowers bee pasture type, 137 Cs activity in honey decreases
significantly faster than in cases when bee pasture was based on bush
and/or tree flowers. Activities of 40 K have very stable values over time.
but that fact is not sufficient to exclude possible competitive effects of
potassium uptake on caesium uptake. Results indicate the importance of free
caesium presence in soil, where plant roots systems are developed, on the
caesium uptake from soil to plants and honey.

Held: from 04/19/95 to 04/26/95
Summary: Investigation of poisonings of honeybees have been carried
out by the Veterinary faculty and Faculty of Agriculture Univeristy of
Zagreb. 57 samples of poisoned bees were analysed between 1980 and 1990.
Analyses for pesticide residues were carried out only in samples where bee
diseases were not detected. Analyses were carried out with gas liquid
chromatography (GLC) or high preassure liquid chromatography (HPLC), and in
a few cases, thin liquid chormatography (TLC) was used.
From 1980 to 1985 70% of total mortalities occurred. With large scale of
application of selective insecticides after 1984. the number of affected
apiaries was reduced. The number of poisoned bee colonies during the peroid
of examination was larger than 3000. The data about involved bee colonies
were not always exact. Insecticides caused poisonings in 82%, fungicides in
7%, a combination of insecticide and fungicide in 4%, and in 7% the cause
of death was not identified.

Summary: 137Cs concentration was measured on flowers, pollen and
honey bygamma - spectrometry. The samples were collected from
RepublicCroatia territory for years after Chernobyl accident. Activity
of137Cs in pollen, higher than in honey, indicates that cesiumbehaves
analogously to potassium. The results show that equalcesium concentration
in surface soil layer results in highercesium activities in honey in cases
of meadow flower's honey beepasture, than in cases when pasture was based
on bush or treeflowers.

Summary: The bees have different reactions on changes of clima or
pastureconditions.
The size of brood, fastness of development in spring and equalitysize of
brood from group of colonies, are very importantindicators on adapation to
environment.
During summer 1992. is established beeyard with 36 hives ingroups with 12
hives each. In first group of hives were addedqueens well known beebreader
from Croatia (mr. Z. Šver), insecond, queens from Kmetijski Inštitut from
Ljubljana, and third, queens from Institut fur Bienenkunde from Austria.
Till autumn, beecolonies were equalized, and started winteringwith same
strenght.
We started to measure the surface of brood in spring 1993.
Beecolonies from Croatia had the highest surface of the brood.Smaller
surface of the brood had bees from Slovenia. In coloniesfrom Austria total
brood surface was the smallest, butdifferrences inside of group were
significant - some of thesecolonies had the highest amount of brood.

Summary: Concentration of trace heavy metals (lead, cadmium, copper
andzinc) in hony pollen and beeswax collected at several
locationsthroughout Croatia were investigated in order to assess
thepotential influence of trace metal contamination of theseproducts, two
types of sites were selected. At "clean" sites, theforaging grounds were as
far away as possible from roads andindustrial areas. "Urban" and
"suburban" sites were those wherethe foraging range is located within a
city area with all itsenvironmental influences with respect to these trace
heavymetals.
Analyses were done by differential pulse anodic strippingvoltammetry
(DPASV) after wet - ashing of the samples. Therespective concentrations
(expressed as wet -weight) of thetrace metals were the following: Honey (in
/ug / kg): 0,3 - 4,4for Cd, 15 - 540 Pb, 180 - 1100 for Cu and 450 - 11200
for Zn;Pollen (in /ug / kg): 20 - 90 for Cd, 100 - 2000 for Pb, 1000 -6300
for Cu, and 13200 - 38700 for Zn; Beeswax (in /ug / kg): 0,8- 21 for Cd,
160 - 1200 for Pb, 410 - 2200 for Cu and 2700 -21100 for Zn.
Lower concetrations of all elements were found at "clean" sites. All trace
metal values within the legal tolerance limits forhoney considering average
dietary intakes. The ratherconcentrations of trace metals in honey and the
inherentveriability of this products with regard to floral sorce, foraging
range, as well as spatial and sesonal fluctuations, probably make it only
partially suitable for biologicalmonitoring of trace metals.

Summary: Carniolan bee (A. m. carnica, P.) is originated on Balkan
penisula, Pannonian plain, and south-east side of Alps. In the experiment
was followed wintering and spring development of Alpinian, Subalpinian and
Pannonian ecotypes. Food consumption and spring development were measured
before and after winter. On experimental beeyard in Grubišno Polje 36
beehives during 1992 year were divided in three groups. During 121 day of
winter time from 20th November to 21th Mart remarkable difference was not
detected in food consumption (4.46 kg average) and number of bees. Big
difference was in cloud and raining April. Bes from Austria were used next
8.59 kg of food, bees from Slovenia 2.13 kg, but bees from Croatia
increased amount of honey for 0.85 kg. At the end of April bees from
Croatia were biggest and biggest amount of brood.

Summary: On the apiaries in Mala Dapčevica, Republic of Croatia and
Lunz am See republlic of Austia a study of biological characteristics of
different ecotypes carnioline bee was made in 1993. The colonies in both
experimental apiaries weredivided in three groups with 12 queens of alpine,
subalpine and pannonian ecotypes. The experiment was designed to establish
the honey consuption during the every colony. During the whole breeding
season brood rearing dynamics, the strenth of the colony, the swarming
impulse and the characteristic behaviour of the bees (aggresiveness,
quietness on the combs) were established every fortinght.
The biological characteristics of the pannonian ecotype (autochthonous bees
in the Republic of Croatia) weren't statistical relevantly different from
alpine and subalpine ecotype in most established parameters. The replacing
of the bees to a newe environment didn't influence the food consuption in
the course of the winter. During the spring low temperature wave the bees
adapted to the local climate conditions consumed the last honey.
The number of laying cells was higher with all ecotypes in Mala Dapčevica
than in Lunz am See in the same period of the year. The difference in the
number of laying cells between the locations was the greatest with Croatian
queens. The Croatian queens layed on the average 111867, the Slovenian
queens 78018, and Austrian ones 78000 cells more in Mala Dapčevica than in
Lunz am See.
The bees didn't recognize all food sources in the new enviroment, which
could be best observed in the lach of pollen in the colonies at the Lunz am
See in the last two measurings. The lack of pollen affected the weakening
of the coloines.

Summary: The aim of this Project is to study dynamics and faith of
137Cs in the environment, it's concentration in soils, persistency and
outgrowth in food chain in relation to the time after Chernobyl accident.
137Cs activity concentration in honey bee products will be followed in this
work. 137Cs concentration measurements in honey, pollen propolis, wax and
honey bees after the pasture on various plant species will be used to
determine the capability of specific species to be an indicator organism
for evaluation of environment contamination. Collected data will be the
valuable basis for the assessment of 137Cs environment contamination and
the prediction of it's behavior in case of future accidents.
