Summary: The utilization of various proportions of dried olive cakes
in pig fattening was investigated. The olive by-products left from
centifugal separation processing have been used. Sixty Swedish Landrace x
Large White crossbreds (30 castrates and 30 gilts) were divided in three
equal in numbers (10+10) groups: two experimental groups, fed the fodder
mix containing 50 g/kg or 80g/kg respectively of dried olive cakes, and the
control group, fed the same mix without dried olive cakes added. The
experiment took 90 days. For the first 45 days the pigs got the starter,
for last 45 days the finisher mix. Throughout ehe experiment the pigs of
both experimental groups, fed mixes containing 50 g/kg or 80 g/kg
respectively of dried olive cakes, attained greater body weight and weight
gain than the controls, fed without dried olive cakes added. During the
complete experiment the castres of all groups became heavier and had
greater weight gain than the gilts. Throughout the experiment the pigs of
both experimental groups, fed mixes with 50 g/kg or 80 g/kg respectively of
dried olive cakes, had a better feed consumption than those ones fed
without dried olive cakes added. For the first 45 days of fattening, when
supplied with starter mix, the animals of both experimental and control
groups didn't manifest any difference in the feed conversion, whereas when
supplied with finisher mix, the pigs of both experimental groups, fed mixes
with 50 g/kg or 80 g/kg respectively of dried olive cakes, attained better
feed conversion than the controls, fed withut dried olive cakes added.
