Summary: In this work we havwe investigated the micribial
degradationof calcium lignosulfonates in sprucewood bisulfite spent
liquorby means of selected cultures of yeasts. The degradation changeswere
followed by gel chromatography.
The lignolytic yeasts of Trichosporon penicillatum iincombination with
fermentable yeasts Pichia stipitis are capableof depolymerizing
lignosulfonate and accumulating low molecularweight compounds.
Repolymerization reactions are can olso accur.

Summary: A mixed bacterial culture consisting of eleven
differentstrain was investigated in view of its ability to
degrade6-aminonaphthalene-2-sulphonic acid (6A2NS).
Taxonomic characterization of the microorganizms showed thatthey
belonged to three genera: Flavobacterium, Bacillus andPseudomonas.
None of the single strains could degrade 6A2NS. Some of 4-5member
cocultures degraded it, but lost the ability in futuresubcultures.
Only the mixed culture consisting of all eleven strains werestable and
efficacious in degradation through numeroussubcultures.
The well-adapted mixed culture degraded the compound fast andwithout
accumulation of intermediates, with a low increase incell biomass and a
high degree of mineralization.

Summary: The application of a mixed culture of microorganisms as
thestarter culture for the aerobic purification and industrial wastewaters
is reviewed.
The new term "biaugmentation" means the enrichment ofactivated sludge
with microorganisms which are able to degradexenobiotics as well as removal
nitrogen using the process ofnitrification and denitrification.
Based on the results this new technology was successfullyapplied, using
"enricher reactors" in plants for the productionof phenol, coke, as well as
for mixed municipal and industrialwaste waters.

Summary: In this work the aerobic degradation of thiocyanates on a
synthetic substrate by means of selected single strains of bacteria and by
mixed culture composed from these strains is presented. By controling the
activity of single strains of bacteria it was confirmed that all strains
show the capability of degradation of thiocyanate into ammonium and
nitrate, respectively. The mixed culture of bacteria exhibited in waste
water of the Bacar cokery (Croatia) the capability of degradation
thiocyanate to ammonium and than to nitrate.

manyxenobiotics in waste waters.
The process of biodegradation by means of mixed culture ofbacteria and
