Summary: The inhibition of ochratoxin A production by the
organophosphate insecticide dichlorvos was investigated using Aspergillus
ochraceus NRRL 3174 in yeast extract-sucrose(YES)-medium at pH 5,5 YES
medium was treated with various amounts of dichlorvosafter inoculation with
A ochraceus. Experiments were carried out with stationary cultures at 28ř
and 37řC over 21 days. Mycelial dry weights were determined
gravimetrically, and ochratoxin A concetrations were quantitated
fluorodensitometri- cally using a Camag TLC Scanner. Dichlorvod at 1.5 mg/L
stimulated the growth of moulds and ochratoxin A production. Higher
concetrations partially inhibited mould growth, and completely inhibited
toxin production.

Summary: In this paper four patienys presented who had been poisoned
by 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The first patient, aged 51
years, had attempted to commit suicide by taking orally 400 ml of a 40%
solution of 2,4-D.He was admitted in a coma, 6.5 h after poisoning.
Extracorporal hemodialysis was performed and the course of the illness was
satisfactory. The second patient, aged 80 years, had accidentally drunk 100
ml of a 40% solution of 2,4-D. He was admitted in a coma a few hours after
poisoning. Hemodialysis and resin hemoperfusion were performed and the
course of the illness was satisfactory. Prior to the above therapy the
patient had a 2,4-D serum concentration of 177 mg/100 ml 2,4-D clearance
was 56,3 ml/min during this therapy. The third patient, aged 24 years, had
drunk 200 ml of a 40% solution of 2,4-D in a suicide attempt, and paraquat
poisoning was also suspected. He was admitted 10h after poisoning and
immediately hemodialysis and hemoperfusion were carried out. The course of
the illness was satisfactory. On admittance the concentration of 2,4-D in
serum was 122.5 mg/100ml, and clearance was 72.9 ml/min during
treatment. The fourth patient, aged 50 years, had accidentally drunk 100-200
ml of a 40% solution of 2,4-D.He was admitted in a coma 3h after poisoning.
Hemodialysis was performed and the course of the illness was satisfactory.
On admittance the concentration of 2,4-Din serum was 37 mg/100 ml and
clearance was 68.7 ml/min. On the fourth day after admittance clinical
signs of 2,4-D poisoning appeared again, with a serum concentration of 43.9
ml/100 ml. The patient's condition improved after further hemodialysis. In
the first two patients there was a prolonged corrected Q-T interval during
coma.

Summary: The effect of different concentrations of potassium sorbate
on growth and ochratoxin A accumulation by mold Aspergillus ochraceus NRRL
3174 were studied in yeast extract sucrose (YES)
both to determine the possible use of that compound as a means
to controlling ochratoxin A accumulation. Experiments were carried out in a
stationary culture at pH 5,6 and 7 and temperature of 25řC during 20 days.
Mycelial dry weights were determined gravimetrically, and concentration of
ochratoxin A was quantitated fluoro densitometrically using a Camag TLC
Scanner.Concentration of potassium sorbate of 0.05% stimulated growth of
investigated mould and ochratoxin A accumulation. Concentrations of
investigated inhibitor of 0.1% and 0.5% partially or completelly inhibited
growth and accumulation of ochratoxin A. Inhibition was depending on the
time and pH values of substrate.

Summary: The effect of pesticide dichlorvos on the growth and
biosynthesis of zearalenone by mold Fusarium graminearum ZMPBF 1244 was
studied in barleycorn to determine the possible use of this compound as a
means of controlling zearalenone accumulation. Experiments were carried out
in a stationary culture at temperatures of 15 and 25ř C, respectively, with
and without a "temperature shock" dichlorvos inhibited the growth of the
investigated mold by 70% and zearalenone accumulation by 95% in respect to
the highest values obtained in control experiments. Using different
concentrations of dichlorvos, we found that, although dichlorvos did
strongly inhibit zearalenone accumulation by 95%, it did not completely
prevent its biosynthesis, even when used in a concentration of 20 Šg/g of
barleycorn.

Summary: A quantitative method for the determination of patulin in
apple juice was examined. The procedure involved patulin extraction from
apple juice with ethyl acetate, clean-up with column chromatography and
preparative thin-layer chromatography. Fluorescent derivatives, obtained by
exposure of patulin on chromatographic plates to concetrated ammonia fumes,
permitted aconvenient quantitative fluorodensitometric assay of patulin by
means of the fluorescence quenching method. The detection limitswere 200 Šg
of pure patulin and 100 Šg of patulin per litre of apple juice. The
recoveries of added patulin ranged from 78 to 110.4 per cent, with a mean
recovery of 97.8 per cent.

Summary: For thousand of years, refiners have been extracting copper
from
low-grade copper ore by a process called leaching. Until 1957,
however, nobody realized that the extraction would be impossible without
the bacterium Thiobacillus ferooxidans, which thrives inacidic enviroment
such as mining sites. Thanks to this microbe, millions of tons of copper
are recovered from billions of tons of low-grade ore every year. T.
ferooxidans is one of several speciesof chemolithetrophs("rock-eating")
bacteria, which are becoming increasingly important in the extraction of a
variety of metals.

Summary: We analyzed electrocardiograms changes of 20 patients
treated because of intoxication coma at the Department of Internal
Medicine. Particullar attention was paid to the corrected Q-T
interval. The etiology of intoxiocation coma was the use of ethanol,
pesticides, antidepressants, anti-epileptics, sedatives,
hypnotics, trichlorethylene and anti-diabetic chlorpropamide.
According to Reed's classification of the depth of coma, nine pa-
tients were in degree 0-I, seven in degree II-III, and four in
degree IV coma. The duration of coma ranged from one hour to six
days. Four patients had died, while in 16 the course of the ill-
ness was satisfactory. Sinus tachycardia was registerred in 11
patients, atrial fibrillation in two, and in seven patients the
rhytm was regular. Fifteen of the 20 patients (75%) had the cor-
rected Q-T interval prolonged with value of up to 0,664 seconds
in admission, while in two patients the corrected Q-T interval became
prolonged during hospitalization. Malignant disrhytmia was
registered in one patient. The relatuve risk of a prolonged cor-
rected Q-T in patients with intoxication come measured 87.

Summary: The potential for inhibition of aflatoxin accumulation by
aflato-
xigenic fungus "Aspergillus parasiticus" NRRL 2999 was investiga-
ted using the dehydroacetic acid (DHA) and the newly synthesized
Schiff base 3-/2-Aminophenylimino(p-toluoyl)/-4-hydroxy-6-
(p-tolyl)-2H-pyran-2-one in yeast extract-sucrose(YES) medium at
pH 5.5. YES medium was treated with various amounts of DHA and
Schiff base after inoculation with "A. parasiticus". Experiments
were carried out in a stationary culture at temperatures of 20
28řC during 28 days. Mycelial dry weights were determined gravi-
metrically, and concentrations of aflatoxins B1 and G1 (AFB1 and
AFG1) were measured fluorodensitometrically using a Camag TLC
Scanner.
DHA cconcentrations of 1.0 Šmol/L and 10.0 Šmol/L, respectivelly,
stimulated mould growth and AFB1 and AFG1 accumulation, but concentrations
higher than 50.0 Šmol/L produced an inhibitory
effect. In the presence of low Schiff base concentrations, mould
growth was decreased by 85% and toxin concentrations by 75% or
completely.

Summary: The relationship between mould biomass and the biosynthesis
of aflamation B1 and G1 (AFB1 and AFG1) on solid subtrates (whole and
crushed maize grains) at temperatures from 15-40řC and a water content in
the substrate of 20-40 % has been investigated.
The experiments have been carried out with the aflatoxigenous
mould "Aspergillus parasiticus" NRRL 2999 in pure culture and
in mixed culture respectively, the latter with the common mould
"Fusarium graminearum" ZMPBF 1244. The biomass growth during cultivation
was measured by the chitin content, and the conce-
tration of aflatoxins was determined by means of a fluorodensito-
meter. It has been established that the byosinthesis of the exa-
mined aflatoxins and their ratio primarily depend on the tempera-
ture of cultivation, rather than on the growth of the mycelium.
The biomass of the mixed culture of "A. parasiticus" and "F. gra- minearum"
after 42 days of cultivation reduces the amount of AFB1
by 20-35 %, and the amount of AFG1 by 25-45 %. The decrease of
both toxin concentrations is more pronounced in the substrate with a
higher initial water content and a higher temperature of
cultivation. The biomass of the pure culture of "A. parasiticus"
after 42 days of cultivation reduces the amount of AFB1 by
15-25 % and the amount of AFG1 by 5-35 % at the same parameters
of mould growth and of water content in the substrate.
