Summary: The Adriatic islands are separate geographic-natural, demographic and economic areas with exceptional natural values. The process of their development takes place under specific circumstances greatly different from other areas. Therefore, as a basic development programme and need is the protection of their authenticity, preservation of natural and other resources, demographic stability, rational economic development and good traffic connections (interisland and with the coast). The task of this project is a scientific research of such development issues whereas the research results will serve as scientific bases to other researches, projects and current development decisions.

Research goals: The basic aim of recent research was a study of appropriateapproach development bases in the elaborated area of specific anddelicate matters that the Adriatic islands are faced with. Thatis the basis for a permanent scientific research of conditions,opportunities and island develoment process, that may contributeby incresing the quality of living and better valuation of givenresources and islands potentials as well as by an overalleconomic-social prosperity. Major results of the research were reported at the symposium"Mediterranean concept of the development strategy of theRepublic of Croatia", held in Split on December 8-9, 1993 and December 7-8, 1995 and through the proceedings they became available to the scientific public.
