Summary: By applying factor analysis of the socioeconomic and
demographiccharacteristics of county districts (former communes),
sevensynthetic indicators of greater generability have been produced.The
classification of the districts by the cluster analysismethod came up with
22 microregions which well reflect thedistictions of economic and
demographic development, as well asthe national structure of the districts.
The distribution followsin part the previous political division into
associations ofcommunes, but with greater consideration for differences
amongthe districts.

Summary: In this paper the validity of public opinion research
conductedin the period preceding the elections by the Institute forApplied
Social Research (University of Zagreb) and for the Houseof Representatives
of the Croatian Parliament, has been analysed.In the course of the
validation analysis suitability of differentpossibilities for determing the
validity of the research resultshas been examined. Furthermore, some of the
specificmethodological difficulties which can reduce the validity ofpublic
opinion research, in our circumstances, and complicate theprocedure of
their validation, have been outlined.

Summary: The principal component analysis procedure is used in the
paperin order to gather more knowledge, based on citizens'
attitudesconcerning Croatian political subjects, about the
fundamentaldeterminants upon which lies the perception of Croatian
politicalscene. A number of research projects in the pre-election
periodhave shown that the body of Croatian political subjects isrecognized
in the public by means of categories of the "left","right" and "central"
political blocs. All the manifest diversityof party-life can be reduced to
the following three factors. Inassesment of figures from the political
scene the public attachesto them corresponding attributes ("left", "rihgt"
and "centre"),but the ruling party is percieved as a separate entity and
not asa member of the "right-wing" orientation, as is the case inassesment
of parties. The pre-election dynamics of the Croatianpolitical scene has
been identified by the conducted research asa greater interior
homogenization of parties, in the first placeof the HDZ.

Summary: Via analysis of results gathered in polls prior to the
1992Elections, the social outlines of parties participating in theelections
have been established. Four analysed groups ofexaminees: committed to
"left-wing" parties, "right-wing" andparties of the "centre", as well as
those indecisive, can bedistinguished in the area of social variables.
Voters for"right-wing" parties are caracterized by poorer
education,religious faith and among them is a larger number of Croats,
andsmaller number of Serbs. Parties of the "centre" are selected bythe
better educated, younger voters, especially students. Partiesof the "left"
are characterized by a stronger support of theSerbs, and weaker than usual
support of the Croats. Indecisivevoters represent a heterogeneous group
which can by mostcharacteristics be located somewhere between the right and
thecentre, and by some features also between the centre and the
left(national structure). Designation within social context hasincreased in
course of the campain, which indicates that thecampaign did have impact.
The results obtained demonstrate alarge influence of socialization factors,
especially in theperiod of education.

Summary: Pre-election polls carried out in July 1992 on a
representativesample of Croatia's voting population, have demonstrated that
inaddition to the heterogeneous reasons of voter choice one canspeak of an
also relatively broad presence of rational commitmentbased on party
programmes and attitudes of presidentialcandidates. The results of a
one-way analysis of variance betweengroups of voters for certain parties
and presidential candidatesindicate the conclusion that decisions of people
voting for theopposition are more frequently governed by programmes
andattitudes than those which have chosen the ruling party and
itscandidate. Moreover, it has been determined that commitment tomore
moderate rather than radical political options is based to ahigher extent
on persons - party representatives.

Summary: The research has attempted to ascertain the reasons which
lie atthe heart of the choice of presidential candidates. It has
beenindicated that the desirable characteristics of the futurepresident can
be divided to those universally desirable, namelythose very important to
representatives of each of the votinggroups, and those which are specific
of followers of only certaincandidates. The first group contains features
of the president'scharacter or temperament, such as honesty, determination,
empathyand tolerance. Experience and knowledge are somewhat less valued.The
group of features wihich are by most generally not cinsideredimportant for
the future president consist of religious faith,the sex and age of the
candidate. Discriminant analysis has shownthat groups voting for Tuđman,
Paraga, Cesar and Veselica, can beclearly discerned from groups voting for
Budiša, Vujić and Degen,following the dimension conservativism-liberalism
(i. e.radicalism), with special emphasis on the importance of religionand
nationalism as essential determinants of EuropeanChristian-Democratic
tradition.

Summary: Based on comparison of research findings concerning
arepresentative sample of inhabitans living in peaceful areas inCroatia and
a sample of displaced persons, obtained during themost severe period of the
war (the transition from 1991 to 1992),the consequences of war were
wxamined within the following threegroups of attitudes: attitudes towards
the Croatian governmentand defense policy, attitudes toward Serbs in
Croatia andattitudes regarding the future and the development of the
overallsituation in Croatia (optimism-pesimism). The analyses conductedhave
shown that the situation of exile did not change thepositive orientation of
attitudes towards the government anddefense policy, that it did not cause
defeatism, but streghtenedthe negative attitude towards the Serbs in
Croatia. Canonicalcorrelation analysis between different problems
concerning thestatus of displaced persons and selected social
attitudes,conducted on the sample of displaced persons, has
demonstratedthat the variability of attitudes is not determined by
theproblems mentioned, but that it should be attributed to otherfactors.

Summary: Within public opinion polls completed prior to the
elections forthe Chamber of Counties of the Croatian Parliament that
tookplace in January 1993, citizens' attitudes concerning thefundamental
problems of the regions they belonged to were alsoexamined. Certain regions
were then compared regarding hierarchyand the acuteness of current
problems. It appeared that the orderof importance of the first five
problems was mostly identicalthroughout Croatia. Regional particularity was
detected only bymultivariate statistical analyses - factor and
discriminantanalysis. The Istrian strive towards greater autonomy is
clearlyvisible, but not more pronounced that one in Dalmatia. Whetherthis
is an introduction to the spreading of the process ofautonomization to
other Croatian regions will depend primarily onhow successful the
government is in solving Croatia's burningissues among which the most
pressing is the constantly fallingstandard of living.
