Summary: The research in the framework of the project
Internationales Lernen in Croatia should take into consideration specific
circumstances this country met with and these are the independence of
Croatia, war conquerings of its territories, ethnic cleansing and the
struggle for liberation, as well as economic restructuring which have the
greatest influence on the position of youth. Therefore for example, the
national-international orientation should be regarded in the light
different for that in other countries in which the research was conducted
and the national orientation have does not eliminate the international one.

Summary: With comparative research on migrant children applying the
samemethodology and at the same time compared to local children, wewere
able to make difference between general school problems ofall children and
problems of their adaptation to new schoolsurroundings as well as specific
problems typical for individualcategory of migrant children. The children
returnees mostly hadproblems with that group of subjects they studied
in"supplementary school". Their insuficient knowledge of theirmother tongue
does not only effect their school results, but alsotheir behaviour and

Summary: The world experienced by the child in wartime is
impoverished inone very important dimension: the dimensionee he/she creats

uncertainty. The identity of the child in the war inCroatia is being
undermined on two sides: on the one hand by thedestruction of his/her home
and family (the basic node ofidentification), on the other - by pressure
due to nationalidentification and the destruction of national identity
(thegroup identity node).

warconsequences for children are long-term damages of children'smental
health which are very often incurable till the end oftheir lives. All
children suffer from joint fears - fear thatsomething will happen to them,
fear of loss, fear of abandoning.Complexity and interweaving of sources of

Summary: The most evident emotional disturbances are expressed in
theconstant feeling of tension, listlessness, withdrawal intooneself,
apathy. Displaced children show the majority of thesehardships more
explicitly than refugee children. This isunderstandable with regard to the
variety of main sources of fearof the formers and the latters. Age, sex and
length of thechildren's refugee status also distinguish the perception

Summary: Direct pressure and violence against the non-Serb
populationbegan in certain parts of Croatia at the end of 1990 during
theso-called "long-revolution". The situation escalated after
directaggression against Croatia in May 1991, and at that time thefirst
waves of expelled persons began. Serb aggression expandedto Bosnia and
Herzegovina in 1992. If we examine the mode and thetime of flight, we can
conclude that at first individuals fled, and later there came to a
full-scale exodus.

Summary: In the summer of 1992 a research concerning the adaptation
to thenew surrounding of expelled children (from Croatia) and
refugeechildren (from Bosnia and Herzegovina) who are located in Zagrebarea
was carried out. Inclusion in the educational system isdoubtlessly a good

satisfactorily included in theschool system at places where they found

Summary: The sequence of war events first in Croatia and then in
Bosnia and Hercegovina stipulated the arrival time of refugees and
displaced persons in Zagreb. This then has reflected upon the quality of
accomodation and different integration in the process of education. The
majority of "exile" municipalities even before exile had natural
depopulation and mechanical outflow. Finaly, the war has disturbed the
population development in Croatia, at the state level and even more
intensively at the regional level. The war has completely changed the
ethnic picture of occupied and partially occupied municipalities. The state
should implement pro-natality population policy and redestribution on the
territory of the Republic of Croatia.

Summary: The appearance of social risks at children is primarily
caused bybilocation of migrant families. Although the population itself
isnot significant according to its number, every single destinyreflects the
complexity of children's problems since theirupbringing has been taken over
by their relatives, friends andeven state institutions as families'
substitutes instead of theirparents. Bilocated family has lost the main
part of its functionswhile the consequences have been felt by children in
the keystage of their psychophysical growth.

Summary: As in the past, likewise in most recent and contemporary
political and ethnic perturbations and conflicts in the South Slav (Balkan)
area, a greater or lesser role of religion (especially confessionality) is
practically inevitable, and in all these cases the basic cause of conflict
is identification of religious and ethnic/national dimensions.
