Title: Science and Politics: Dangerous Liaisons

Authors:
Sesardi, Neven (42971)
Journal: Journal for General Philosophy of Science
Volume: 23
Year: 1992
Pages: from 129 to 151
Number of references: 40
Language: engleski
Summary: In contrast to the opinion of numerous authors (e.g. R. Rudner, P. Kitcher, M. Dummett, N. Chomsky, R. Lewonitn, L.R. Graham) it is argued here that the formation of opinion in science should be greatly insulated from political considerations. Special attention is devoted to the view that methodological standards for evaluation of scientific theories ought to vary according to the envisaged political uses of these theories.
Keywords: science, politics, acceptance of theories, dangerous knowledge, self-censorship, objectivity

Title: Heritability and Causality

Authors:
Sesardi, Neven (42971)
Journal: Philosophy of Science
Number: 3
Volume: 60
Year: 1993
Pages: from 396 to 418
Number of references: 60

Summary: The critics of "hereditarianism" often claim that any attempt to explain human behavior by invoking genes is confronted with insurmountable methodological difficulties. They reject the idea that heritability estimates could lead to genetic explanations by pointing out that these estimates are strictly valid only for a given population and that they are exposed to the irremovable confounding effects of G-E interacion and G-E correlation. I argue that these difficulties are greatly exaggerated, and that we would be wrong to regard them as presenting a fundamental obstacle to the search for genetic explanations. I also show that, to the extent they are cogent, these objections may prove to be even more damaging to the "environmentalist" standpoint.

Title: Recent Work on Human Altruism and Evolution

Authors:
Sesardi, Neven (42971)
Journal: Ethics
Number: 106
Year: 1995
Number of references: 30
Language: engleski
Summary: The article examines the phenomenon of human altruism from evolutionary perspective. The paradox of altruism is here construed as consisting of four positions each of them being seemingly plausible despite all of them appearing to be mutually incompatible. The problem can be solved 1) by eliminating at least one of these four propositions, or 2) by showing that contrary to the appearance the whole statement is perfectly consistent. After discussing all possible answers it is argued that the best bet are two forms of reconciliationist strategy.
Keywords: altruism, egoism, inclusive fitness, sociobiology
