Summary: The work examines some epistemological and methodological
aspects of evolutionary explanations, especially concerning the optimality
assumption. It is the assumption that evolution produces traits, either
morphological, physiological or behavioral, which can be treated as optimal
adaptations, in respect to the given enviromental conditions (constraints).
Arguments are presented that make optimality assumption dubious, together
with the whole research program that is based on it (adaptationism), as
well as some of its achievements and applications (especially in the realm
of social sciences).
Keywords: evolutionary explanations, optimality assumption, adaptation, natural selection, enviromental conditions, constraints, alternative evolutionary forces, causality, corelation
