   Summary: The paper gives a review of the objections to adaptationism given by R.C. Lewontin and S.J. Gould (1979), and examines whether and to what degree this criticism can be warranted against the adaptationist counter-arguments regarding the alleged explanatory and research achievements of the modern (neo-Darwinian) evolutionary theory. The most important issues here concern the role and relative importance of natural selection versus internal and ecological constraints and alternative, non-selective forces (e.g.,random genetic drift, cultural influences, etc.) for the evolution of various properties of organisms and populations. The importance of these issues is stressed in regard to the recent attempts of extending the evolutionary (adaptationist) methodology to social sciences ("sociobiology").

   Summary: The work examines some epistemological and methodological aspects of evolutionary explanations, especially concerning the optimality assumption. It is the assumption that evolution produces traits, either morphological, physiological or behavioral, which can be treated as optimal adaptations, in respect to the given enviromental conditions (constraints). Arguments are presented that make optimality assumption dubious, together with the whole research program that is based on it (adaptationism), as well as some of its achievements and applications (especially in the realm of social sciences).
