Summary: The purpose of this project is a book, which will be finished in autumn 1995. It is about history of historiography, methodology and theory of history concerning the "great" historiographies (the german, french, english and american). The book will contain the continuities and discontinuities in the developement of historiography, reflexions about the place of history in the system of sciences, information on various historiographic streams and "schools" from antiquity up till today and on methods of scientific research. There will be emphasized the most important problems for the understanding of contemporary movements in historical science which are essential for the further development of croatian historiography.

Research goals: The book Historical Science is out of print and there is no use publishing a third edition because it covers the period only up to the middle of the 1970s. It must thus be brought up to date using new literature from the history of historiography and the methodology of historical science. As there are no financial or other possibilities for historians to travel abroad and get acquainted with developments in modern historical science at the source (nor does translated literature allow this) new information is indispensable for the further development of Croatian historiography.
