Summary: The subject of the research project "Croats in neighbouring countries: history, culture, perspectives" are different characteristics of the oldest Croatian emigrants in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania and Italy. The aim of the project is inquiring of their real position, perspectives and connections with Croatia as their homeland. The monograph will be an outline of this project.

Research goals: Immediately after its foundation in 1971, the Institute forCroatian History initiated and organized the project "History andculture of the Burgenland Croats". After many difficulties the project was completed and the book "A History of Croats from Burgenland - history and culture". As the project about the history andculture of the Burgenland Croats has now been completed, weconsidered it necessary to begin research into all Croatianethnic minorities in neighbouring countries-Austria, Hungary,Slovakia, Romania and Italy. Besides illuminating their historyand culture, it will be necessary to establish their trueposition, perspectives of development and especially theirconnections with their mother country Croatia. The basic goal ofthe project is to prepare and publish the monograph Croats inneighbouring countries: history, culture, perspectives. Themonograph will contain a textual part, historical maps and thelike, and high-quality reproductions of the most important itemsfrom the heritage of those Croats. Thus special attention waspaid to the collection of such documentation.
