Summary: The research af actual human losses of Croatia during the
WorldWar II has not occupied an appropriate place in Croatianhistorical
science. The exception represent partialinvestigations into human losses
caused by fascist block, andlimited to smaller territorial units. The
article points out thatthe task of establishing exact number of lost lives
in Croatiaduring the war is not only a civil need, but above all a task
ofCroat historiography; this problem must be considered exclusivelya matter
of historians. The fundamental confrontation ofmilitary, political, and
ideological forces as the main factorswhich caused human losses are
analyzed. The author pleads for amethod of personal identification in
establishing the actualhuman losses in Croatia, which is done through a
closeexamination of archives and other possible historicaldocumentation.

Summary: The interdisciplinary research of the human loss in
Dalamtiaduring 1941, based on personal identification of each
victim,encopasses 758 murdered, killed in combat, and non-violently
deadpersons identified so far. The analysis, which is also organisedin
tables, accounts for age; place of birth, residence and death;sex and
marital status; social origin; national and religiousallegiance; combat
unit, cause of death, etc.
The analysis partially confirms earlier conclusions that themajority of
perished persons were civilians. The analysis pointsout the manners of
death, thus providinig tentative indicationsabout the sides in conflict and
their war activities.
