Summary: The project named "The Historic Settlements and
Environments in Croatia" is concieved as the series of minor research
tasks, some of which are in their initial stages, while others have been
conducted for a longer period of time. Its final aim is to contribute to
the preservation of the most valuable historic towns and built environments
in Croatia, which presupposes a wide knowledge of history of their
development. The results of the work on each of the project tasks are being
published (in the form of the scientific studies or monographs), or
prepared as integral parts of the syntheses to appear.
Research goals: The research has the following principal aims: 1. to
gather historic, descriptive, photographic, architectural and topographic
data which, collected in this way, have its historical dimensions, but they
are, at the same time, also a specific inventory of the present condition
of the settlements. 2. to investigate and analyse the development of the
settlements in various historical periods, relations between the towns and
villages, and the new communications (highways, etc.) and their relations
and impact on existing cultural and historic landscapes. The expected
result of the research is an evaluation of the monuments which are a huge
part of our national heritage. The scientific results serve, as well, as
the basis for numerous regional- and town- development plans, but also in
the making of plans of protection and reconstruction for towns, monuments
and landscapes. The results are also useful in other research areas (i.e.
history, sociology, demography).
