Summary: Interpretation of eight renaissance trefoil facades from 15th and 16th century in Croatia. In comparative analysis with Italian trefoil facades the author delivers new arguments that the trefoil facade of the cathedral in Šibenik, created by Juraj Dalmatinac (1441 - 1475), is the earliest (first) one in Europe and the only one functional and that it was a model for other trefoil facades of "coulisse type" in Italy and in Croatia: cathedral in Osor, St. Mary in Zadar, St. Spas in Dubrovnik, cathedral in Hvar, St. Mary in Saint Vincent, St. George in Pag and the chapel of Zamanjić summer residence (Dubrovnik). The author defines four types of relations between space and the facade: 1. functional (identity) 2. congurent relation of three part facade in front of three-nave churches 3. partly congurent 4. manneristic relation to (negation of) the cathedral in Hvar (trefoil, three part facade in front of middle nave) and cathedral of St. Mary in Saint Vincent (trefoil, three part facade of single-nave church). Beside typological classification there is also definition of style (early renaissance - classic - manneristic). Three churches of similar type with semicircle gabels are St. Francis church in Rab, St. rok church in Split and Holy Spirit church in Šibenik. Structural identity of Šibenik cathedral, the unity of stone material and construction method are the characteristics central Dalmatian school established by Juraj Dalmatinac and continued by Aleši and Niccolo Fiorentino.

Summary: A short exposition of the history of the cathedral is given. Anobject itself has been defined as a romanesque basilica of the13th century with a prototype that could be found in the vicinityof Florence. The phases of the western portal construction havebeen identified according to the results of the thoroughstructural-iconographic-stilistic analysis. An idea for theportal by sculptor Radovan (1240) is the third one in a succesion- between the architecture withot sculpture and the Romanesquerealisation with a sculptures - a couple of lions and arepresentation of primordial parents. Master Radovan has succededonly in constructing an internal portion of the portal that hasbeen finished by the completion of all the parts at the end ofthe 14th century. At the beggining of the 15th century portal wasenlarged, which gave it its present outlook. Delivered from other ideas and works by other artists Radovan'smaster-piece expresses its classical models and character, revealing universal importance for development of the style.

His conclusion is that Raduanau's work is by it's morphology still belonging to a romanesque-gothic styl, although it's structure already belongs to ghotic. Author is sistematicly elaborating five problems: iconographic topography, composition, relation between the scene nad it's architectural rim and iconology of the scene. Scene itself is defined as a thetrical event ressembling middle-age theatre, and not as a reflex of some erlier work or a depiction of a live scene.

It deals with the "censorship" of certain features in cycles of illistrations of the Apocalypse which had a polemical significance in the context of Reformation disputes (e.g. removal of the tiara from the head of the infernal Beast, Babylonian harlots etc.). Retouching of such features was sometimes undertaken under the pressure of official censorship, and sometimes as a preventive measure designed to evade bans imposed by the secular or ecclesiastical authorities. In certian cases Catholic publishers used retouched illustrations from Protestant sources.
