Summary: The introduction refers to the presence of Italianis in
Zagreb and links with Italy during the middle ages, as well as to
incursions by the Turks in the last quarter of the fifteenth century. Both
of these factors played a part in introducing the Renaissance to Zagreb.
Bishop Osvald was the first to reveal its art and culture to the clergy and
people of the city through his incunabulum (Brevarium Zagrabiense, 1484)
and the choir-stalls in the Cathedral. Bishop Luka commissioned the altar
of the Holy Cross (altar-piece), his Brevarium (1505) and the Missale
Zagrabiense (1509-11), along with various other Renaissance liturgical
objects. Between 1512 and 1520 bishops from the Erdody family erected walls
and bastions round the Cathedral, a prime example of fortifications of the
early Renaissance type.

Summary: Ever since the founding of the diocese the bishops of
Zagreb have made, through their organisation of its parishes and
archidaconates, a major contribution to large parts of Croatia and Western
Bosnia which belonged to the diocese. Churches were bulit in what were then
the prevailing European styles, and were often of the highest architectural
and artistic merit (e.g. the chapel of Medvedgrad). The bishops had their
own scriptoria, and with the invention of printing produced the first
incunabula and many subsequent works. They founded the celebrated
Metropolitan library, many of the bishops were themeselves authors and
translators, among them were also generous patrons of the arts, sciences

Title: Trefoil facades of renaissance churches in Croatia

- Ivančević, Radovan (17183)
Journal: Peristil
Number: 35
ISSN: 0553-6707
Year: 1993
Pages: from 85 to 120
Language: hrvatski
Summary: Interpretation of eight renaissance trefoil facades from
15th and 16th century in Croatia. In comparative analysis with Italian
trefoil facades the author delivers new arguments that the trefoil facade
of the cathedral in Šibenik, created by Juraj Dalmatinac (1441 - 1475), is
the earliest (first) one in Europe and the only one functional and that it
was a model for other trefoil facades of "coulisse type" in Italy and in
Croatia: cathedral in Osor, St. Mary in Zadar, St. Spas in Dubrovnik,
cathedral in Hvar, St. Mary in Saint Vincent, St. George in Pag and the
chapel of Zamanjić summer residence (Dubrovnik). The author defines four
types of relations between space and the facade: 1. functional (identity)
2. congurent relation of three part facade in front of three-nave churches
3. partly congurent 4. manneristic relation to (negation of) the cathedral
in Hvar (trefoil, three part facade in front of middle nave) and cathedral
of St. Mary in Saint Vincent (trefoil, three part facade of single-nave
church). Beside typological classification there is also definition of
style (early renaissance - classic - manneristic). Three churches of
similar type with semicircle gabels are St. Francis church in Rab, St. rok
church in Split and Holy Spirit church in Šibenik. Structural identity of
Šibenik cathedral, the unity of stone material and construction method are
the characteristics central Dalmatian school established by Juraj
Dalmatinac and continued by Aleši and Niccolo Fiorentino.

Summary: Banos Arabes in Palma de Mallorca by ground-plan belongs to
the same type as the church in Gradina. Also, the size of the church in
Gradina is closer than the size of other examples to which the Mallorcan
church was compared to (Istambul, Solun). Therefore, the author concludes
that the church in Gradina is no longer an exception of central plan
buildings in Dalmatia, beside Byzantine monuments from 6th (J. Marasović)
century mid-Byzantine period in 9th century sholud be considerd. Also,
possibility of analogies and influences from the Western Mediteran sholud
also be examined, instead of just ones from the East.

various parts of the building recorded by the parish priest at that time
during the reconstruction in 1937-38, the article concludes that St. Mark's
was a Romanesque basilica with a separete bell-tower. It acquired Gothic

ancient Christian bishopric of Sisak, for which there is evidence in many
altars and statues of St. Quirinus, the martyred bishop of Sisak, the
Hungarian saints, King Stjepan and king Ladislav and Prince Emerik. The
Franciscans and Dominicans with their churches and monasteries in the

Summary: A short exposition of the history of the cathedral is
given. Anobject itself has been defined as a romanesque basilica of the13th
century with a prototype that could be found in the vicinityof Florence.
The phases of the western portal construction havebeen identified according
to the results of the thoroughstructural-iconographic-stilistic analysis.
An idea for theportal by sculptor Radovan (1240) is the third one in a
succesion- between the architecture withot sculpture and the
Romanesquerealisation with a sculptures - a couple of lions and
arepresentation of primordial parents. Master Radovan has succededonly in
constructing an internal portion of the portal that hasbeen finished by the
completion of all the parts at the end ofthe 14th century. At the
beggining of the 15th century portal wasenlarged, which gave it its present
outlook.
Delivered from other ideas and works by other artists Radovan'smaster-piece
expresses its classical models and character, revealing universal importance
for development of the style.

Summary: The author is givig an interpretation of "nativity" scene
from the lunete of the Trogur cathedral portal as a methodological model of
difference between morphological and structural analysis. His conclusion is
that Raduanau's work is by it's morphology still belonging to a
romanesque-gothic styl, although it's structure already belongs to ghotic.
Author is sistematicly elaborating five problems: iconographic topography,
composition, relation between the scene nad it's architectural rim and
iconology of the scene. Scene itself is defined as a thetrical event
ressembling middle-age theatre, and not as a reflex of some erlier work or
a depiction of a live scene.

Summary: Through the six chapters of the book author is giving

concept of perspective" he is giving an interpretation of the thesisi and
theories that were connected with term "perspective" in the scinetific
literature from the XVI century to the present days. Basic thesisi of the
author is that each historic period has its own idea of the perspective:
view of the things is always "a view of the world", and ways of seeng
things are decisive for the ways of its representation.

Bakač in Ostrogon (1507) demonstrates an influence of the chapell Ursini in

this edifice (still unknown) could be from the Trogir circle, even Ivan

Summary: The article will be published in a collection of papers. It
deals with the "censorship" of certain features in cycles of illistrations
of the Apocalypse which had a polemical significance in the context of
Reformation disputes (e.g. removal of the tiara from the head of the
infernal Beast, Babylonian harlots etc.). Retouching of such features was
sometimes undertaken under the pressure of official censorship, and
sometimes as a preventive measure designed to evade bans imposed by the
secular or ecclesiastical authorities. In certian cases Catholic publishers
used retouched illustrations from Protestant sources.
