Summary: The Early Christian complex at Gata is a typical example of
early Byzantine architecture of Justinian, s time, but uncommon in
Dalmatia. It belongs to the "Double shell" scheme of ground plan. Obviously
it was of oriental influence. The church should be dated to the mid of the
6th century, since the cult of Saint Cyprian was introduced in Dalmatia in
this period. The saints relics were placed in the richly elaborated tomb
under the altar. The book deals also with the rich sculpture showing very
fine motifs of both of figural and ornamental schemes. Also fine finds of
fresco paintings, glass, pottery and coins were found. All these finds are
dealt in detail. The church and other finds show that the ancient Gedate
was very important site also in the late antique period.

Summary: In the nortwestern corner of the parish church at Supetar
on the island of Bra;the remains of an Early Christian basilica was found
during the preservation of the modern church. Although only smalla part of
the chruch was discovered, it was possible to reconstruct the plan of the
northwestern part of the church. Except the walls and bases of columns
richly decorated mosaics were found. They are very similar with those from
the Early Christian church at Kaplju; in Salona. So it was supposed that
Salonitan craftsmen made these mosaics. This suggests the importance of the
site and church. The basilica is dating from the 6th century. Some small
parts of church sculptural decoration were also found. All these finds were

Summary: In this text Diocletian's palace is deal;t, especially the
architecture and the religious concept of the archiotecture and sculpture.
There is straight relation between the Palace and Salona, the capital of
the Roman province of Dalmatia. The author attemped to draw the parallel
between the way of Diocletian's rule and the architecture, because he,
after the decision to retire, was no longer the emperor. But, there obious
traces of a kind of the court ceremonies. In the apper there was made an
effort to find out the characteristics of the emperor's portraits which is
very difficult, since in the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 4th
century the physiognomic characterist are not more realistic. Yet some
portraits on the Diocletian's coinage reflect his image. He was not fat,
but bony with long and slightly curvilinear nose.

Summary: In the Zemaljski muzeh in Sarajevo a female head is kept.
The head shows a mixture of individual features and iconic and
transcendental forms. The coiffure is similar with those of the empress
Galeria Valeria which is in German terminology known as Scheitelzopffrisur.
Thus the head is from the end of the 3rd or the beginning of the 4th
centuries. The similarity between the empress and the portrait in question
results from the known phaenomenon of the correlation between the
physiognomic features and the time in which it was made.

Summary: The Greek expression katechoumenon, appearing in the
earliest description of the Church of the Holy Trinity (St Donatus) by
Constantine Porphyrogenitus is the subject of the paper. This expression is
widely spread in the time of the reign of Constantine, the emperor and
writer. Katechoumenon denotes the galleries of church structures, and its
origin in the Early Byzantine architecture of Constantinople. This element
reveals the cultural source from which Bishop Donatus, in addition to the
relics of St Anastasia, probably also brought the plan of the church of the
Holy Trinity

Summary: In the artic;le the head of an elderly man discovered
during excavations in Nin in 1989 is studied. On the basis of stylistic and
iconographic analysis it has been clearly shown that it belonged to the
statue of the emperor Nerva. It has been reworked from a portrait of
Domitian. The phaenomenon of damnation memoriae is further considered in
the context of the Roman portraiture. The appearance of a Domitian head in
Nin is in relation to the extenstive construction activities of the Flavian
dynasty in tis region. The head of DomitianĐNerva is the earliest example
of a Roman emperor reworked head on the Eastern Adriatic and the thirteenth
portrait of Nerva in the Roman world.

Summary: The researches of the consignatorium of the Salonitan
cathedral was until now related to theconstruction of Hesychius basilica,
as well as mosaic floors. That means that mosaics were done in the
beginning of the 5th century. New analyse of mosaics in this room has shown
that the motifs and borders are very similar to those from the cross-shaped
church in the same architectural complex. Being constructed in the 6th
century the cross-shaped church as well as similar mosaics from the
Justinian's period testify that also consignatorium must have been built in
the same period.

Summary: The analysis of 22 Latin inscriptions from Senia shows the
data concerning municipal status of the town, its municipal institutions,
administrative and public services. Some inscriptions testify the existence
of numerous Roman cults. The inscriptions also show the existence of curia,
thermae, sanctuaries etc. An inscription suggests that in Senia was
organized custom office for Dalmatia. Ethnic structure of the town could be
also deduced from inscriptions. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries the half of
inhabitants were Italics and half Orientals. In the beginning the main
offices were held by Italics, but after Orientals grew in importance, since
they became more richer.

Summary: The paper deals with the importance of the astronomy in the
interpretation of the bull-killing image in Roman mithraism. It was
established that Graeco-Roman world imagined Taurus constalation as bull
head or sometimes with front legs. The rest of the bull's body, visible in
the cult image, symbolizes the ecliptic. The star Spica, placed in the
ecliptic, on the bull-killing scene is represented by gain-spike at the end
of the bull's tail. The opinion that Mithras figure represent also the
Perseus constallation is wrong, since Perseus constallation is situated
neither in equator nor in the ecliptic. The conclusion of the paper is that
astral symbolism of the Mithric cult image is consistent. The beckbone of
the structure of this image consists of two celestial circles - equator and
ecliptic with their fugures-constallations.

Summary: In the St. Antony and Rochus church at Gornja Podstrana two
very important fragments were built in. The first is the relief showing the
shepherd god Silvanus and Nymphs. The second is the gable of the altar
screen showing plastic cross flanked by two birds. The former relief
testifies the existence of a Paneum on the very site of the church or
nearby. The latter one implies the existence of a pre-Romanesque church.
One of the very well known phaenomenon is that Christian churches were
built on pagan sanctuaries, especially panei in Dalmatia. The gable relief
is an indication that here could be expected also an Early Christian
church. So the inscription dating from 1666 above the southern entrance of
the modern church must be linked with a renewal, not the completely new
construction.

centuries the situation is somewhat changed, since the bays became the
posts of the rests of sheeps. The sheeps were waiting there for longer
period than before. So the silors, trevellers and pilgrims built the
churches for the Christian cult. The period of this building activity is
5th and 6th centuries. The financial means were provide by these travellers

Summary: n the paper a fragment of Roman stele was published.
The fragment contains a young woman portrait showing very interesting
coiffure. This type of coiffure is made according the matrice given by the
Roman empero family (Lucilla, Crispina). That is another example of the
imfluence of the vogue which prevailed on the court. The portrait was
executed on the background of the St James' shell. The stele is dating from
the second half of the 2nd century AD. Thus it is one of the very rare
examples of the monumental stele dating from this century.

Summary: The motif of the Jonas thrown in the sea is one of the most
popular motifs in the Early Christian, especially sepulchral art. The motif
consists of three sailors and Jonas. The first is helmsman, the second the
sailor who throws Jonas. The third is on the prow with the stretched arms.
It was hard to say whom he represent. The most interpretations were
inclined that he is a man praying. However, the author explained that he
was the pilot of the sheep who watched the coast and the bottom of the sea
to correct the route. He signalized with his arms to the helmsman. The
author's conclusions are bazed on the sculptural parallels showing the
sailing sheep abd the Jonas' reliefs and pictures.

Summary: The prostyle temple in the Diocletian's Palace in Split is
situated on the oppsite side of the Emperor;s Mausoleum. Since there are no
written records (epigraphic or other historical sources) on the authentic
dedication, it was supposed that it was dedicated to Jupiter. Author
analyzed the remains of scultural decorations and found out that the
decoration shows different religious motifs. Thus he supposed that it was
dedicated to several gods or godesses. It has oviously pantheistic
character. That is also in concordance with the Diocletian's authentic
attitude towards Roman (pagan) religion.
