A certain estheticcontinuity remained only in the execution of more intimate works- nude and portraits. Although the realism could be identified asthe primary vocation from the beggining of his cariere, althoughhe was on of the very few croatian sculptors with a real talentfor monumental form, application of social realism doctrine hadtwisted most of his grate post-war projects into theobjects of pure political propaganda.

Summary: Meštrović's sculpture is characterized by pluralist expression, symbolic inspiration and new artistic devices. The future of this born sculptore was marked by a systematic artistic education in Vienna, where he participated in the dynamic life of the "Sezesion", began to exhibit his work and reched fame. In his work he achieved a fusion of the best traditions of the past and contemporary trends. Inspired by Rodin, he reached an early climax in his Fountain of Life (1905). A new decisive influence was a backward glance into archaic values and archetypes, folk poetry, the tradition of his native village Otavice. Out of this came a cycle of human figures, quite monumental, reaching an effect of timeless symbolism.

Summary: Numerous women participated in the only exhibition ever organized by the Society for the Promotion of Arts and Crafts (Zagreb 1927). One of them was Kornelija (Nely) Geiger (1896-1976). Her work has been unjustly forgotten just like works of Otti Berger who was one of the leading memebrs of the weawing studio related to the Bauhaus movement. Geiger is the outhor of interesting work in textile and fashion design, a rather meagre field in this country in the early decades of this century. Nelly Geiger studied at the Zagreb Arts and Crafts School and at the Art Academy in 1915/16, Then she spent several years in Vienna where she attended Emmy Zweibruck's Art School and became a member of Austrian Werkbund. She took part in two world exhibitions in Paris (1925 and 1939) and was awarded diplomas for her work. She won prizes at specialized international competitions in Gleb (Czekia) and Schaeberg (Germany). All of this allows us to consider her one of the pioneers of design in Croatia.

The relation between the agression and art disclosed itself in two ways: negative - through devastation and positive by inaugurating creative results. The flow of artistic vitality is perceptible in the extraordinary anti-war-activities and exhibitions which are partly reconstructed.

Summary: Hermann Bolle, the leding architect of the Historicist era in Croatia, the protagonist of major plans for renewal during the last quarter of 19th century, was also the curator of the Museum of Arts and Crafts in the years from 1890 to 1907. Althouhg Museum was fighting for its very exsistance during that period, and its collections had to make way for other functions that were regarded as more essential, an attempt had been made through the meticulous examination of records to identify and assess Bolle's contribution to the Museum. Not only did he plan the building and its craft training centre, he was largely responsible for the Museum's permanent display, as well as the designing of part of the furniture it included. These were far from minor undertakings, and they deserve mention in any major account of this versatile personality.

Summary: When described and analysing the art phenomenon in the 20th century in Croatia, only few researchers considered it necessary to formulate the exhibition areas and the entire cultural context from which the art emerged. This text tries to promote another way of thinking. The subject of the Ullrich Art Hall in Zagreb seemes ideally suited for this purpose . the preserved archive materials (inventory books, records of exhibitions) together with a huge number of of art works exhibited there in the past, give reise to the idea of this homage. After all, it became obvious that there used to bee two exhibition halls: one owned by the father Antun Ullrich (1909-1928) and the other by his son Edo (1926-1948). Due to their lively exhibition activity and promotional and beneficiary attitude, both have played a major role in the Croatian art between the two wars.

In that context, we wolud like to point out certian problems, the slowing of wich is a perequisite to the establishment of a sound base of an inter-institutional network of scientific and cultural information: standardization of a minimal number of of descriptive categories for each structure - work of art, production of control vocabularies, program platform selection and formation of common work groups wich wolud coordinate the sloving of the above mentioned problems. The expected result of the data base development is also the involvement of the Institute of History of Art in international exchange of scientific information.

Summary: During the immediate post-war period (1945-1952) Antun Augustinčić was the most prominent representative of the social-realism doctrine in our sculpture. Through the careful analysis of his work, it is possible to extrapolate a main iconographic sujets of the period in question: portraits of the Leaders and Heroes of the Revolution, scenes of the battles and symbolic figures of the anonymous revolution supporters - soldiers, workers and miners. Augustinčić has adopted those subjects during his two-years long stay in SSSR (1945/46). He acommodated them to suit our situation and used as a base for his, mostly monumental sculptures to the end of his career. As a formal and compositonal start-point for his works Augustinčić, as the most Soviet sculptors, has chosen a solutions that belong to the historic monuments of the second half of the XIX. century. Considering grandiosity and political importance of his sculptures, Augustinčić could be compared with the most prominent Soviet artist as Vuchetic, Manizer or Merkurov, prior to Croatian sculptors of that period.

Disccusedare the main problems (standardisation, data exchange), andrestrictions of the information systems developed through thefirst phase of informatisation (shortcomes in presentation ofdocumentary values of the museum objects). These shortcomes areresult of the application of the bussiness systems developmentlogic to the problems that could be find within museumenviroment. Authors:
    Kolešnik, Ljiljana (179593)
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: Based on the example of the after-war part of A. Augustinčić's oeuvre, it is possible to single out main iconographic subjects that dominate our monumental sculpture trough the short-lasting period of social-relism. There are tree main topics: portraits of the Leaders and Heroes of Revolution, scens of the battels and national resistance and syimbolic figures of the anonymous supporters of the Revolution. Augustinčić has adopted those sujets during his stay in SSSR (1945/46), and was using them as a iconographic pattern for all of his after-war monuments. From the formal point of view those projects are following a model of 19th century historic monument. Considering their grandiosity and political importance, Augstinčić's monimental sculpture sholud be compared with works of the most prominent soviet social-realists, prior to our sculptors of the period in question.

    Authors:
    Galjer, Jasna (186995)
Type of work: Članak u Vijencu
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: The fact the prestigious jorunal "The Studio", the image of which still features as an artistic cult even after a century, devoted a lavishly illustrated account in its July issuse of 1909 to Tomislav Krizman, then totally unknown, tells us more than any number of phrases about Krizman's true place in European context. From his very first prints, drawings, illustrations, vignettes and caricatures that appeared in the magazines "Život" and "Vijenac", which, in the absence of any manifesto served very well as programme of the new trends in art about the year 1900, Krizman always "thought in terms of line."; in every phase of his work expressive line is as much a recognisable feature as a trademark similar to the vignette by which he marked it, thus becoming the first artist in this region to sign articles of everyday use on the model of the artistic products of the Wiener Werkstaette.

Title: ISO KRŠNJAVI: AN ARCHITECT OF METROPOLIS

    Authors:
    Galjer, Jasna (186995)
Type of work: Članak u Hrvatskom slovu
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: Of the controversial personality and achievement of Izidor Kršnjavi it might be said that they represented a rare charismatic phenomenon, an individual who invested his enormous energy unstintingly in developing the cultural life of this area. His collabration with Strossmayer, whose patronage of the Academy he founded in 1866 was to become a major factor in the cultural, scientific and academic life of Croatia at the time, very soon led Kršnjavi into the heart of the Gruenderzeit. The term may be used in more than a meraly metaphorical sense, for it was indeed an era of grandiose foundations which nowadays have rather fewer negative connatations than they once had. The age was marked, on the one hand, by a naively enlightened progressive phase of our national culture - and, on the other, by certian inauspicious circumstances through which indrustrialization was to remain more of an unrealised dream than a true stimuls to craft production.

Title: The brilliance of little stories": Otto Antonini's illustrative art.

    Authors:
    Galjer, Jasna (186995)
Type of work: Članak u Vijencu
    Language: hrvatski
Summary: The stylistic and morphological features of Antonini's work associate it in time and space with what was happening in the hitherto inadequately researched, so-called marginal area of 20th-century Croatian art, that idiom which, for want of a better term, is called Art Deco. It was also the time when the philosopher and and writer Miroslav Feller founded in Zagreb his institute for the academic teaching of advertising and publicity together with its "Imago" programme, and launched the jorunal "Advertisting" - all of which created the climate encouraging the activity of Atelier "Three" (1929-1941), in which Zagreb gained its first specialised studio for the fullscale production of commercial graphic desing. At the same time, a programme, "Delo", modelled on the "Deutscher Werkbund" tried to put on the market modern objects of everday use that were od good quality and acceptable to a broad public, whose middle-class taste - or lack of it - had first to be overcome.
