Summary: Between the 1918 and 1940 Zagreb experiences a period
ofintensive construction, formost in the field of residentialbuilding. The
interest in social urbanism and dwelling is ratherintens. The most
interesting examples of such type of buildings,and,at the same time, the
earliest one, is a garden colony ofrailroaders from the year of 1927. The
colony has beenconstructed in the vicinity of the first public promenade
ofsouth-eastern Europe - Maksimir park. The result of such loctaionwas a
high quality of the views and a respect for the greenareas. Colony has been
designed as a variation of threebasic types, consisting of 32 houses and
145 flats, and conecting"a personal freedom with collective neccessity" on
the high-gradelevel.

executedaccording to the architectural proposal by the architect
FranjoKlein (1868), and belongs to the period of romantic historicism.The
main theme is a wine cellar, while a dwelling area has beendesigned only

Summary: Railroad and the complex around main railway station
represents aproblem for spatial expansion of Zagreb towards south.
Studygives a suggestion for the solution of this problem, anddescription of
the, so fare, the best project dealing with it -regulatory plan by Milan
Lenuci from the year of 1907. The planis not giving only a solution to the
problem of the railway flow,that has been removed from the urban area, but
brings the visionof Zagreb as a metropolis. Stylistic and morphologic
foundationof the idea are rooted in the period of historicism and
theculture of secession. it is a typical hybrid work from the breakof the
century. The project has not been executed.

Summary: Among the greatest victims of deterioration of the
Cathedral in Zagreb are its gargoyles, a host of chimeras placed by Bolle,
in a burst of creativity high up on the church structure. Every figure
which offered enough "to go on", was reconstructed by expert sculptors:
four human figures figures by Nesto Orcic, and Bolle's famous frog by Vinko
Fabris. The chimeras which had completely deteriorated were replaced with
new figures made by a team of artists selected by the Cathedral Restoration
Committee (Vinko Fabris, Zvonimir Lončarić and Izvor Oreb) who have all
produced fine and interesting work.

Summary: Between the two world wars some fifteen housing estates for
tenants with low incomes were built in zagreb. If we look at the estates
planned on the 1932 map of zagreb, we find that most of them are located on
the south-eastern and south-western outskirts of the city, alongside
existing factories and on remote sites, whereas on the northern side of the
city there are none, apart from studios on Voćarska Road. The typical
buildings on the estates may be divided into multistorey, high-rise
buildings of the so-called "barracs" type, and low-rise buildings of the
so-called "box-car" type, terrace houses, semidetached and single family
houses. Most of the estates nad no public premises or service areas either
planned or built, but a few had community halls and squares planted with
trees and shurbs. Although anything but ideal town-planning models, some of
the schemes demonstrate that even low-cost standardized housing
accomondation may have architectural or at least town-planning potential.

Summary: The period between the two world wars represents one of the
mostproductive periods in Zagreb's housing. The local authorities
andvarious companies tried to solve the acute problem of smallworker+s
appartements by erecting colonies of town houses and lowtypical housing
projects. Some fifteen colonies were built,ranging from brick shacks to
villa residential districts,depending on the period, author and house
tipology.

Summary: Through the twist in the relation between real and
evasivespace, the centre of the old Valpovo becomes cultural andturistic
attraction of near by Bizovac. A modest civilarchitecture of the old
Valpovo, erected over the middleagedparcelling, marked by its baroque and
19th century forms, givesevidence about the middle-class tradition of
eastern Slavonia andCroatia. Its demolishion is absolutely
contra-indicated, and itsrevalorisation and redesign - neccessary.

historicmachinery workshop (toady - factory "Janko Gredelj"), andsuggestion

Summary: The impulse for the study was an exhibition of the
recenthorticultural projects tending to improve identity of Tkalčićstreet.
study begging with 14th century, giving a history of thestreet, that was

faitin Croatia. One of them is a reconstruction of the historicalcentre of
small Slavonian town Valpovom that has not beendemolished through the war
1991/1992, but redesigned byinappropriate investment into a devaststed
country.The example ofValpovo demonstrates a neccessity to identify a
cultural heritagevalues, as one of the prime preconditions for
reconstruction.Middleaged Pakljena complex and renaissance villa
LodovicoBaccadelli on the island Šipa, near Dubrovnik, have beenneglected
during a peaceful times, but brought to the very edgeof their existance
through the war period. A decision toput them on the monuments
reconstruction priority list has tospring out not from every-day life
requirements, but from theproject of the future of the region.
