Summary: The project is analyzing the results of the individual
architectural monuments (and entire oeuvres) with their urban (and
regional) context. A valorization of architecture is conducted from the
point of view of urban values of the objects. Significance of the cities
and landscapes are analyzed as the results of individual oeuvres.
Structural elements of architecture have been identified as style formants
of the city and landscape (facades of the houses, flow and dynamism of the
street, formation of the corners - rhythm and vista, building materials -
reality and evasion, sky-line - architecture and metaphor, etc.).
Architecture, horticulture and urbanism are interpreted within the history
of culture. A part of the research is, because of war circumstances,
dedicated to negative phenomena of "style and city" - represented by the
analysis of the monuments and cities destruction. Within the work on the
project , a lots of papers have been published during last tree years: an
important individual buildings, building ensembles, and architects from
Zagreb and Croatia, have been elaborated. Special accent is put on the
period of historicism. It is important to realize that the upper time limit
put into the middle of 20th century proves to be untenable, because major
architectural oeuvres, as well as the problems that could be followed up to
the present.
Keywords: architecture, style, town, historicism, expressionism, secession, first half of the 20th century, Croatia, Zagreb, Herman Bolle, Milan Lenuci, Stjepan Planić,
Research goals: The goals of the project are to fill in major
chronological and topographic gaps, elaboration of representative
phenomena in Croatian architecture and urbanism of 19th and 20th century;
development of the interpretation of relations between object and the
context. Expected results encounter monographs of individual architectural
oeuvres (Herman Bolle, Stjepan PlaniŠ, Milan Lenuci, Juraj Neidhardt),
urban units ("Zelena potkova", Maksimir, Mirogoj, Zrinjevac, Railway
colony), and a comprehensive survey of the historicism, secession and
expressionist architecture in Zagreb. Other information about the project.
